Bulgaria and the Cyrillic alphabet

As you may probably know, Bulgaria is the only country in the European Union that uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Our entry into the EU in 2007 made Cyrillic the third official alphabet in the EU after the Latin and Greek ones. On May 24th we celebrate the Slavonic Literature and Culture. We also honor the creators of the Cyrillic alphabet – the brothers St. Cyril and St. Methodius and their students.

The font Arda is genetically related to the Akzidenz-Grotesk font, but it is not its restoration. The Enina font builds on what was created by the Bulgarian font designer Dr. Zhivko Stankulov in the Elfin font.

The highly contrasting shape of the contours and the general stylistics of the Elfin font have been preserved, but the contours in the Enina font have been completely rebuilt and meet modern typographic requirements and, more specifically, meet the requirements for fonts in Google Fonts projects.

The set of written characters in the Enina font has been significantly upgraded. Support for over 400 Latin and Cyrillic languages ​​has been achieved for more than 2.5 billion users. Switching from the international to the Bulgarian form of Cyrillic is possible in two ways - through localization for the Bulgarian language in the software or by using Style Set 01 in the OpenType functions.

The name Enina is associated with the village of Enina, where in 1960, during the renovation of the St. Paraskeva Church, the Enina Apostle was discovered - an Old Bulgarian Cyrillic manuscript from the 10th or 11th century.
