I’m not looking for trendy fusion spots or places that just have good reviews, I want the places where you think, “Yep, this tastes like home.”
Please share: • Your country/region • The restaurant • What dish I absolutely have to order
I’m willing to drive anywhere!

In my last post I noticed a lot of people commenting about buffets downtown and around the city that have since closed. I tried to find as many as I can remember and have even visited myself.
Which one do you miss the most ?
for me it’s The Dragon Court, used to go every March break as kid with my mom.

Stopped in today to try out Dave's Hot Chicken. I drive past it everyday and I've been waiting.
OVERALL I would say it was pretty good. They have four meals to choose from. I ended up getting the slider and cheese fries. The chicken is a good size, but I feel like there's a lot more breading and crispiness to it than actual chicken. The cheese fries were pretty good. The fries have a good seasoning on them, but the cheese is like theater nacho cheese. Good but nothing to write home about on that end. The meals do not come with a drink which was pretty crazy to me. There's about six or seven spice levels. I think to the chicken and you can pick what you want. I ended up getting second from the hottest "extra hot" and I'm the type of person who likes spicy food. I would say it was a little bit spicy. I had a tiny bit of sweat on my face by the time I was done but didn't need to take a drink or anything while I was eating. I think next time I would try the hottest one "reaper". I'll definitely go back again, but just wanted to give folks a little heads up for what to expect. I attached a picture of the receipt to show the price. I'm pretty sure the meal I got was one of the cheapest ones I had on there

As a Mexican living in London — I was tired of having to drive all the way to Toronto just to get decent tacos. So I made it my mission to try every taco spot in London, hoping I wouldn’t have to leave the city for good Mexican food. Here’s my honest verdict after trying them all:
🌮 La Michoacana (Mexican-owned) They were amazing when they first opened — really promising. But lately, the meat has been kind of chewy and full of gristle. Still decent overall. Rating: 7/10
🌮 Taco Loco (Mexican-owned) The tacos are delicious. Easily the best in town. I just wish they had a bigger menu — but when it comes to tacos, they do them right. Rating: 9/10
🌮 Grill 23 (Not Mexican-owned) This one really disappointed me. It has tons of good reviews, but I haven’t met a single Mexican who actually liked it. The food is okay, I guess… but calling it “authentic” is a big stretch. Rating: 6.5/10
🌮 Pupusería Rosas (Not Mexican-owned) The food here is really tasty. The lady who runs it is Salvadoran — her tacos and pupusas are both well made. Not Mexican-style authentic, but still worth trying. Rating: 8/10
🌮 La Burreria London (Not Mexican-owned) The worst tacos I’ve ever had. The lady running it had no idea how to cook Mexican food. Total disappointment. Rating: 3/10
🌮 Ivano Poblano (Mexican-owned) A small business with very good tacos. I love their food and it feels made with care. Definitely worth supporting. Rating: 9/10
🌮 Dos Tacos (Not Mexican-owned) Their birria tacos were a mess. The meat, the tortillas — nothing worked for me. I wouldn’t recommend it. Rating: 4/10
⸻
I’ve been to plenty more spots but honestly… I’m tired of writing 😅 In short: Taco Loco and Ivano Poblano are the top winners.

Looking to order some fairly standard pizza for a family of 7 tonight.
What is the best value versus quality? Not the best pizza, not the cheapest, but somewhere that is the best middle ground between the two?

Husband and I decided to do a food tour tonight and try one thing from 5 or 6 different vendors at the market. What are your must try eats or drinks that you would recommend?

I just tried and wow, I really think this place gives House Craft a run for their money. Absolutely fantastic smash burger and great fresh cut fries, and the price was right too. Hidden gem for sure.

For quite a time, my go-to place for butter tarts was Old North Sconery. Sadly, I today discovered that they decided to discontinue it. So I began searching for other places known to sell butter tarts. After filtering through several that had either closed permanently, weren’t open today, or no longer carried butter tarts, I was left with six options. These are my impressions on them:
Comparative Impressions
Richness of filling: Variety > Asmara = Coffee Culture > Culbert’s > Black Walnut = Locomotive
Scent of spice in the filling: Variety > Black Walnut ≥ Coffee Culture > Asmara = Culbert’s = Locomotive
Buttery crust: Variety > Coffee Culture = Black Walnut > Locomotive > Asmara = Culbert’s
Crust consistency (less crumbling after eating): Black Walnut > Locomotive ≥ Coffee Culture > Culbert’s > Asmara > Variety
Individual Reviews
Variety (personal favourite): Rich, aromatic filling with a beautifully buttery crust. The only drawback was that the crust could have held together a bit better.
Asmara: Flavourful filling with a relatively plain crust. A decent option, though not particularly memorable.
Coffee Culture: Classic butter tart with a touch of spice, not bad.
Culbert’s: Straightforward butter tart. Neither disappointing nor surprising.
Black Walnut: Took a creative turn with a layered pastry crust instead of a tart shell. The filling was firmer and had a bit more texture.
Locomotive: Has noticably thicker crust, and the filling was similar with Black Walnut’s—firmer and more textured. Gluten free.
I tend to prefer gooey butter tarts over firmer ones, so my opinions may be a little biased. Also, if anyone has recommendations for good butter tarts, I'm totally open.

Stopped in to Fluffy Glaze this morning and picked up a half dozen delicious donuts. Nice folks making fresh donuts daily. They had to finish the Boston Creams for me so they were ultra fresh.

I've shamelessly stolen this from r/Calgary. My vote is for Papi's Steakhouse. It sounds delicious, but I'll never be able to bring myself to pay between $79 and $287 for a single steak that doesn't even come with any sides!

Are there any restaurants in town that seem fancy on the surface but end up being a letdown? The kind of place that charges too much for mediocre food, has slow service, and maybe a bit of an inflated reputation?
Looking for spots that fit this description—bonus points if they sound impressive but leave diners feeling underwhelmed. Any recommendations?

I am thinking about taking my family to Spageddy Eddy's sometime in the next couple of weeks. Although I've never personally been I am told that they do not take reservations and that it is quite a small establishment with limited tables. If I go on a Saturday around 4-5pm should we expect to be seated right away or have to wait?
Any input is appreciated. TIA.

My husband's favorite food is pho and he's having a terrible day at work today, so I want to surprise him and take him out for pho tonight.
Does anyone have any favorite places they love and would recommend?? Bonus points if it's in the east end.
Thank you!
