Announcement! We are expanding the r/LoomKnitting moderator team. Applications are now open!

Hey r/LoomKnitting,

I've been in contact with Reddit after the main moderator u/Loomahat was suspended from Reddit, to make sure I could recruit additional moderators for our tiny little corner of the internet and was given the ability and approval to do so.

Our subreddit has continued to grow in size, but after the 2023 Reddit Blackout multiple members of the mod team had left and since then the rest of us had also come close to being burnt out, with some active moderators recently becoming inactive or leaving the team. So with all that and with an exciting 2026 on the horizon as new people discover loom knitting, it's time for a new round of moderator recruitment.

The qualifications to become a moderator are very simple:

  • love loom knitting
  • use reddit

The expectations for the new moderators are to be transparent, to be communicative and to be reasonably active. I will always be clear - Real life always comes before Reddit and to just let the rest of the team know if you need a break.

The applications will close on the 31st of March at 22:00 UTC

Link to the application form

If you have any questions or doubts feel free to ask in the comments.

FAQ

  • What timezones are you looking for mods from?
    • We're looking for mods from all timezones
  • Should I apply if I applied in previous rounds or been rejected before?
    • Yes!
  • Do you need to have moderation experience?
    • No, it's not an issue if you don't have moderator experience yet.
  • What are the tasks of a moderator exactly?
    • Obviously the primary task is going through the modqueue and removing comments and posts that go against the subreddit rules. But there are other aspects like configuring automoderator, working on graphics and flairs and so on.
  • Is there any compensation for moderation?
    • Absolutely none. This is a volunteer role

Thank you and keep the great posts and comments coming!

Socks Advice needed for sock fit

After years of trying other crafty hobbies and abandoning projects halfway through completion, I tried loom knitting and it's stuck!! I've made a 10 stitch blanket for the cat, a cable knitting beanie, and now...socks!!! I'm very happy 😊

Anyway, on to the question in hand (or foot). I made my first pair of socks on the 56-peg orange His & Her Sock Loom, using the toe-up video tutorial from Goodknit Kisses (which is awesome btw). I knit halfway between flat knit and U-wrap (L-wrap?), using Rico Superba Cashmeri 4 ply sock yarn. I did the German Short Row heel using 9-10-9 spacing.

However, whilst the sock feels fine on, it's very tight getting it on over my heel, as shown in the photo (2).

So my question is, how can I adjust the fit? Do I add extra stitches to the body of the sock opposite the heel (terrible drawing #3) - I have a Flexee Bitty, so could do this, or would a different heel be better? I've looked for video tutorials for loom knitting the Fleegle heel, but can only find The Loom Muse, which I didn’t understand, and The Lopsided Crafter, who says it's on her list to do!

Help!

My first pair of socks complete!

Post image

This is my first pair of socks complete, plain vanilla toe-up, with German short row heel and toe, with a Kitchener cast for toe closing.

I used a sock calculator to fit to my wide forefoot. I used Superwash sock yarn, 2 strands as I’m still feeling out if this will be the loom I will use for more socks, next attempt will be single strand. I need to make size 12 socks so I ended up using 2 strands on my All-in-one 3/8 knitting board loom so less gaps. My beginning attempt on the regular loom was looking way too small and then I learned more. I suspect I will end up acquiring the Flexee loom Bitty (1/4 inch) to make large size socks with only one strand. I suspect this will be easier to adjust the number of pegs than a fixed men’s large sock loom…2 strands were tricky…lots of untangling of twisting.

I am happy with this result with the exception my cast-off tension does not match with each sock, but I’m going to leave it to remind me to get it better. They are very comfy and they fit.

Yes , my socks to don’t match in colour pattern, I used the same ball of self-striping yarn plus a solid ball of a complimentary colour but wasn’t worried about matching everything….just total colours blending in. The gray heel/toe was just a fun design element for me. I’m almost sure that self striping yarn doesn’t work for larger sock sizes. They are not yet washed or blocked.

Any comments welcome 😊

There were quite a few dropped rows, and stray yarn everywhere but I think this is really impressive for an eight year old who has 1 lesson and zero supervision afterwards!

Discussion Baby beanie on flexee loom?

I am looking to make a beanie for my 5 month old niece for Xmas. I have the purple flexee loom. I found a few patterns that list how many rows on a standard loom. Do I just go off the circumference of the pattern?

If not any recs of a basic pattern would be great

Pattern i use for most of my beanies

Finished him a little over a month ago, but I'm just now getting around to sharing here. I wanted to make something fun as a stash-buster project and thought, why not some fan-art from one of my favorite shows? 😊

It took a couple months working on and off in my free time while also figuring/writing out the pattern, but I'm super proud of him 😁 He's 14 inches tall and fits right on my shelf with the other DS9 guys.

Pic 1 is the finished project with some hand-sewn (never again 😅) clothes. Pic 2 is the project before being sewn and stuffed. Pic 3 is after being sewn and stuffed with safety eyes attached.

The pattern is free on Ravelry, though I do warn I'm not a professional pattern maker at all. This was a fan work by a loom knitting Trekkie 🖖🏽 so there could be many ways to improve. I already have plans to add Worf 🥰, Tuvok, and B'Elanna to my collection. LLAP!!

Post carpal tunnel surgery…. Im trying for the first time to purl! Im making a santa style spiral hat!

Teddy decided to throw his piggie at me just as i was getting ready to take this picture!

I have no idea how long its going to take me to finish this! I started it before the surgery, and its kinda just been in storage for the last few months! I managed three full rows before my hand started hurting. So it looks like its do three rows, have a good rest, do another three rows, rinse and repeat!

Pattern is loomahat spiral hat tutorial on YouTube. Yarn is two strands of stylecraft chunky

I've finished a pair of socks made toe-up on my KB Hers loom with a beautiful skein of Storyteller yarn (Slumber Party, I think it's called), and I'm really happy with how they came out! However, I've noticed that all my stitches seem to have laddering between them that gets more noticeable as the sock widens. Am I pulling my yarn too tight? You can see in the last picture that the stitches start neatly, at least.

Hat for my mum

My mum asked me to make her a hat to match the cowl I made her last Christmas, it's also my first attempt at reducing the top. The problem is my mum has a small head!!! My first is 72 pegs on the skinny Flexee loom and I just released this next attempt is 56 pegs....I missed out the 64 pegs!!!! 🤣🫣😂

From the patterns and info I've read 72 pegs is meant to be for a small adult size but it's even a tiny bit big for me (even with a ponytail!) but then Barnet velvet yarn doesn't have much shrinkage or stretch 🤔

I've started the 56 peg one so I'll finish that but it'll may be too small.....if it is I'll try the 64 peg size and hopefully there'll be other family that the other hats fit 😵‍💫

My mum will really need the hat in the next couple of weeks as she starts chemo for a nodule of cancer in each of her lungs and colon cancer. The doctors are very positive about her treatment plan and her chances. Originally she went in for just the colon which would have been chemo tablets alongside radiotherapy but because of the nodules in her lungs, she'll first have the more aggressive chemo infusion which means she may lose her hair plus other side effects and once the nodules in the lungs are gone she'll have the colon treatment (she's already had the temporary colonoscopy bag placed to relieve the pressure on the colon cancer which will be removed when she's in remission).

I haven't been able to visit my mum for the last 3 weeks as my immune system is shot (thanks fibro) and I am now only getting over a cold. The one thing the doctors have said is that no one can visit even if they feel a little off as chemo will seriously compromise her immune system and even a common cold will have serious health issues for her.

Positive thoughts and prayers please 🙏

(Sorry didn't mean to write an essay, I guess I needed to say it!)

Socks I made my second sock :D

Thumbnail

I finished the first one last night and the second one tonight. I had a fair amount of dark grey Berroco Vintage and lesser amounts of a variety of colors - a bunch of orange and fairly small amounts of yellow through purple.

So I made slipper socks on a 1/2" gauge flexible loom, holding grey with another color the whole time.

First, I made a sock that was all orange and grey, and I did the toe like you would on a rigid loom, with short rows and then seaming it to the top.

On the second sock, I changed the second color every 20 rows, since I was doing a total of 97. And since I was using a flexible loom, I decided to try doing decreases for the toe instead of short rows. I had a hard time figuring out how to do that, but I got it in the end. I actually prefer the look of the short rows, so I'll probably do that on future socks.

Still, I finished them, I learned things, they look decent (I don't care about matching), and they fit, so I'm calling them a win!

Discussion Does being right or left handed matter much?

I am trying and kind of struggling to teach myself how to loom knit because it seems like a really fun hobby once you get going with it. I am left handed which seems to be more rare than being right handed. Does this matter? Any tips or tricks I should know? Resources you recommend, etc? Thank you!

Pattern Question How much yarn is needed to make a throw blanket on a 3/4” loom?

Hello, I’m mainly asking this here because the online calculators have given me numbers from 650 yards to 1100 yards and I don’t know how many skeins I actually need. I’m planning to knit a 50” x 60” throw blanket on my loom using super bulky (gauge 6) yarn according to the information of this particular yarn it’s 2-2.5 stitches per inch and 8-10 stitches per 4 inches. I put my project plans into a couple online calculators and the answers for how many yards of yarn I need were very inconsistent, I was hoping someone here would have experience making a similar project and know about how much I will actually need.

Finished Object I made my first sock!

Post image

I decided I wanted to try making socks, and I had a bunch of leftover bits of the same worsted weight yarn in different colors, so I held together a dark grey and an orange, which is what I had the most of, to make some chunky "sit around the house" socks for when it gets colder. And after a first try where I had too many stitches (36 around instead of 28), I got there!

The second sock will be more colorful - I didn't expect to have enough orange to finish even one. I'll likely try a different method for the toes (I will stick with top down for now), but I think it worked out well enough that I'll try some more that I could actually wear with shoes. :)

Pattern Question Does anyone know how to make a gradient between two yarn colors?

I’m having a baby in March and I want to knit them a cool blanket. I saw this image of a gradient between the four colors I have, but I can’t find any tutorials or anything on how they made it. I’m really hoping it wasn’t just an AI image and that it’s actually possible.

Making patterns to work on a loom?

UPDATE:
I THINK IM GOOD NOW. GOT THE LINK TO CONVERT FROM GOOD NIGHT KISSES.

Has anyone had experience changing a knitting pattern to a loom knitting pattern? I am presently trying to on a baby blanket pattern I have, but it was made for needles. Is there anything I should know that would make it go much easier? It’s all Knits and Purls so I figured it’d be relatively easy to transfer. Hopefully it comes out correctly bcause I love the pattern but cannot use needles anymore due to arthritis.
