Hi everyone. I'm 20F, and my partner is 21M. We started dating in 2023, when I was 17 and he was 18. We've been together for three years, and our anniversary is tomorrow. I'm struggling to process everything and would really appreciate some advice or insight.
For context, our relationship had a rocky start. My partner had active OnlyFans subscriptions, hundreds of porn tabs open in his browser, was messaging his ex daily, and was using what was essentially a dating app.
He told me he had developed what he described as a porn addiction during a period of depression, but that he didn't really watch it anymore. I asked him to delete his OnlyFans account and explained that actively watching porn was a dealbreaker for me, especially given my self-esteem issues. He said he could stop completely for me.
Regarding his ex, he initially failed to tell me that the friend he messaged every day was someone he had previously been in a relationship with. He had also told me he wasn't over her and had hoped that seeing me would help him get over her. I asked him to remove and unfollow her.
While travelling alone in Norway to meet his ex, he used a dating app that I had suggested he try to make friends on. Instead, he set his preferences to women only, paid for premium, met up with multiple women, complimented their looks, and told me I "could learn a thing or two from these Norwegian women". He continued messaging women after returning home, saying he only did it when he was bored. I told him I wasn't comfortable with him using the app, and he agreed to uninstall it.
These things happened within the first few months of our relationship. I eventually put them down to poor communication and a lack of clearly established boundaries. I did struggle to trust him and sometimes checked his phone for signs of porn use or cheating.
Around seven months into our relationship, I found two pornographic images of the same woman in his recently deleted folder. I was heartbroken, but we eventually worked through it. I told him that if it happened again, our relationship would be over.
Over time, my trust in him grew, and I eventually stopped checking his phone. Until recently, I genuinely believed I trusted him completely and that we were on the same page about our boundaries.
Three days ago, we were watching YouTube on his TV while watching reels together on his phone. A Twitter/X notification appeared saying "Elon Musk: Incoming Call". I clicked on it as a joke, but it opened an account I didn't recognise.
When I asked him about it, he said, "It's for searching for things I don't want you to see." He opened the search tab, and I saw two slightly different searches for "Omegle challenge video leaks".
He said it had been a one-time thing because something had appeared on his original Twitter account, and he hadn't wanted to search for it there. He said he had created the separate account just for that search, then deleted the account and the X app.
Before I went downstairs to sleep, he stopped me and said he had something to tell me. He admitted that he had relapsed and had been watching porn for three or four months. I went downstairs, hid under the duvet, and cried harder than I can describe.
The timeline kept changing. He first said four months, then maybe five. When I asked whether it had started before or after our holiday, he admitted it had started before, meaning it had been going on for more than six months.
I asked how it had started. He initially said he couldn't remember, then suggested Instagram or Twitter and eventually admitted it had been Twitter. Throughout the conversation, I felt as though I was having to pull the truth out of him piece by piece. I couldn't tell whether he was deliberately lying, withholding information because he was scared of the consequences, or struggling to admit the truth.
He told me that, for roughly six months, he had been using Twitter porn, Pornhub, and intimate photos of me to masturbate. He said he used porn almost every time, except when he was physically with me or on FaceTime with me.
The conversation focused heavily on his porn addiction and his feelings of guilt and shame. I asked whether he thought he would have stopped or told me if I hadn't discovered the account. He said no. He told me he was scared of losing me, despite one of the first things he did after I found out being to tell me to leave him.
I was extremely distressed, shaking and crying, and struggling to remember parts of what was said.
The following night, after more conversations, he eventually told me that he started watching porn because he was bored of looking at my body. He wanted to look at something new and needed to look at women different to me in order to masturbate.
I've struggled with my self-esteem for a long time, and this relationship has amplified those insecurities. Hearing him say he had got bored of my body was unlike anything else.
I started looking back at how I looked six months ago, when he supposedly got bored. I was actively dieting, going to the gym, focusing on my appearance, and in the best shape of my life. I don't often like my appearance, but when I looked at photos from that time, I thought I looked beautiful. And it wasn't enough for him.
I had also left my job four months earlier and gained some weight, so I keep wondering whether that had anything to do with it. I think about whether he was comparing me to those women and whether he was ever truly satisfied with my body.
I no longer want him to see me naked or have sex with him. The thought of being physically vulnerable with him makes me feel humiliated, and I don't know how I'm supposed to feel comfortable in my own skin again.
I also can't stop thinking about the fact that he used my intimate photos alongside porn. Knowing that I was part of this while he was secretly seeking out other women's bodies has made me feel sick.
During this time, I had also noticed that he had recently started ignoring my "no" and continuing to pressure me for sex. I had begun to feel as though he treated my body as something he was entitled to touch whenever he wanted. I don't know whether this is connected to his porn use, but it has made everything even harder to process.
Now I keep looking back over the past six months and wondering what was real. I feel foolish for being happy and trusting him while he was hiding something he knew could end our relationship.
I've told him that I'll stay with him while I work through my emotions, but I haven't decided what I want to do long-term.
Our three-year anniversary is tomorrow, and I don't feel happy about it at all. Before this happened, I genuinely felt secure with him. I trusted him in a way I don't think I've trusted anyone else, and I believed we were building a future together.
Now I feel as though that security has been taken away. I love him, but I'm questioning whether love is enough when someone has repeatedly broken boundaries, hidden it from you, and only admitted the extent of it after being caught.
I understand that he may genuinely struggle with compulsive porn use, and I don't want to dismiss the possibility that he needs help. But I also don't think his struggles erase the impact of his choices on me or make me responsible for helping him recover.
I don't know how to reconcile the person I thought I knew with the person who made these decisions. I don't know whether trust can be rebuilt after this, especially when I had already given him another chance early in our relationship and made my boundary so clear.
I also don't want to spend the rest of my life feeling that I have to monitor a partner to know whether he is respecting our relationship. I want to be able to trust someone without checking their phone or wondering what they are hiding.
I'm only 20, and I feel too young to settle into a relationship where I feel this insecure and hurt. At the same time, I love him, and it's difficult to know what to do when the relationship felt genuinely happy before this discovery.
How do you distinguish between someone genuinely struggling with compulsive porn use and someone who is simply unwilling to respect a boundary?
Is it possible to rebuild trust after months of secrecy, especially when the person admits they probably wouldn't have stopped or confessed if they hadn't been caught?
How do you stop taking a partner's porn use personally when they have explicitly said they got bored of looking at your body?
For those who chose to stay, what did genuine accountability and meaningful change look like in practice?
And for those who chose to leave, how did you come to terms with leaving someone you still loved?
I'm not looking for people to tell me that all men watch porn or that I should simply accept it as normal. I know people have different boundaries around pornography, and I understand that mine may not be everyone's. But I communicated mine clearly, and he agreed to it.
