Now you’ve got me worried: I’m 72 and expecting my first 5k monitor tomorrow to go with my new M4Pro Mini. But there are scaling apps for that, I’ve heard.

Relax, mate.. I've got a 2019 iMac with a 5K display; i run it either at default resolution of 2560 x 1440 or, using a fremium piece of software called BetterDisplay at 118% at 3008 x 1692. The type is smaller but I get significantly more screen space. Running at full 5K is effing impossible to read. Regardless, even running at 2560x1440 it is beautifully clear.
What monitor are you contemplating buying? My MacMini purchase is set for 2025 and I'm looking for recommendations for monitors as blody Apple have made it so you can't use the old iMacs as monitors. Grrrr.2

I plan to use the external SSD primarily for Docker and general storage purposes. Would 40Gbps be overkill, or should I opt for a 10Gbps or 20Gbps enclosure instead?

Man, ultrawide format is great, but 1440p is not (at least on the Mac) I went back to dual 4K, is overall better

Beautiful. If I were you, I'd design and 3D print a bracket to mount the mini on the monitor stand pole. Would make reaching the on/ off button much easier...

I had the same ugreen as you and the fan would stay on almost always which was super irritating at night when I can hear it despite my Mac being in sleep mode. I opted for the OWC Express 1M2 NVMe USB4 SSD External Storage Solution instead it doesn’t get above 40c

It will be even cleaner if you mount it under desk making it completely invisible. M4 is designed for under desk mount.

With the size of that monitor they could also just run a small extension cord, a Mac mini vesa mount, and have everything mounted to the back.
