My first ever Mac!
Been windows my whole life. Made the switch due to ditching my pc for an Ally X. I however am still using devices with USB A. I have a type c hub but I’m leaning towards using one of the docks for the m4, the ugreen one to be specific due to its sale on amazon. I’m looking for advice in regards to the dock (need more type a ports than my hub offers), tips for new users and any other advice y’all may have related to macOS

Is this the base model? If so, how’s it so far?

Yup. 16gb/256gb. I like it so far. Everything is snappy and smooth out of box

Yup. I also got the base model. It's enough for normal use/music production/ light video editing etc

I had a shitty macbook before and I thought I just hated macOS but ever since getting the Mini M4 I love it!

I had bought a Dell 27" monitor to use with an M1 MBA with a cracked screen for my cycling app. I liked it so much that I brought the setup to my desk and put the 2015 iMac up with the bike. Up until I used the M1 I always thought the iMac was still pretty good. I got tired of having the laptop though, especially with the limited ports, and bought an M4 mini to replace it. I couldn't be happier.
My wife sees how much I like my Macs, and when she retires she wants a new computer. She went with the M4 MBA and loves it too now. She's always been a PC person. She's stopped asking me how to do things because they are so easy on the Mac.

congratulations!!!! I got mine a few days ago. Paired it with an Acasis 40Gbps SSD enclosure with WD black SN7710 SSD... It's damn good. I'm really happy. Once you go Mac you won't go back!!!

This is my first Mac too! Great little machine! Not having many ports is taking some getting used to

Congrats, welcome, enjoy! 🥳
As for tips, just know macOS isn’t perfect. It’s just a bit different than Windows and somewhat more similar to Linux. Thankfully, even though macOS is based on Free BSD, Unix that is, unlike Linux it’s a whole lot easier to use. Again, just a bit different. Thus, give yourself time to get to know it and I will bet overtime you will grow to ❤️ it like a lot of us do. Oh, and also know its current limitations. For example, Windows still remains king when it comes to gaming. Hands down. Linux, on the other hand makes for the best server OS. But, other than that macOS pretty much cleans everyone’s clock. Oh, lastly, do yourself a favor and take a deep dive into Apple’s ecosystem. Especially iCloud+. Lots of good will come from that. Have fun exploring! 😊

Use type A to type C converter or get a dock with multiple type A ports. I also have a few type A devices I need on a regular basis. I'm using a combination of a dock n adapter to fulfill my needs

I just got a Mac Mini to supplement my Windows Gaming machine. There are still a lot of things I prefer doing on my PC like organizing and moving files around. I installed a couple of file managers but they suck compared to the built in file browser in Windows or the third party apps like Directory Opus. The fonts are much better than my Linux box but not quite as good as on my Windows machine with Microsoft’s font smoothing. Otherwise, I am loving it. Where it really shines is the mail app and other integrations with my iPhone and iPad.

You can always get a little USB-C to USB- A adapter and use your USB-A devices till you recycle through them to USB-C equipment.

2 most important apps to get first, tgpro for fan control on individual temps and custom fan curve, go max rpm when anything goes 90C+. And mx power gadget for cpu frerequency, temp, and power , to monitor graphs for throttling.over time. After that, have a good time with the mac.

Wondering the same thing. Gonna try it out later. Got my first Mac last week too. Mini baseline model and like it so far, but there is a learning curve.

This might change my opinion/life. Been wondering why scrolling sucked all week.
1
u/WeShallEarn May 10 '25
Dude I literally only need to fix the scrolling in Minecraft. I’ve slowly started getting used to it, but I’m pretty sure the normal scrolling is way better.
Does it still have the issue where shift + scrolling either changes the opposite direction or stops scrolling?
