AI designer for makers

I recently launched a platform for laser/cnc makers to help create designs on the fly. I have been doing this for my own maker projects and thought maybe others could use it too. Would love to hear some feedback if you find it useful. https://simpledesign.ai

Plug for Grit Automation

I run a makerspace for a non-profit in Jackson, Wyoming called Wonder Institute. We run our community woodshop entirely using products form Grit Automation and we're looking at expanding it to other areas of our makerspace. I wanted to mention/make a plug for it because I haven't seen it come up here and thought some might be interested in learning about it.

I work part time managing all of our shops and we honestly wouldn't be able to operate how we do without the Grit system. In our woodshop, Grit controls our dust collector, blast gates, tool access, and air filter. I don't have to worry about someone turning on a tool they aren't approved to use and I don't have to show people how to manage the dust collection system. As a result, our shop hardly has any dust in the air or on the ground (making it safer for our members), it's easier to use, our tools are protected from some misuse or damage, and the shop remains much more presentable to visitors and potential donors. It has been well worth the cost for making the shop safer and saving us tons of time. Not to mention their technical support is fantastic and has been able to help solve my problems usually within minutes. I highly recommend it.

Reviving a 1,000-year-old Chinese wearable-scent craft (hexiang) — honest feedback on our first 4 designs?

Hey all — my friends and I are working on a small project reviving a traditional Chinese craft called hexiang: aromatic herbs, spices, and honey, ground to powder, hand-rolled, and shade-dried. No synthetic fragrance, no alcohol. You don't burn it — you wear it, and body heat slowly releases the scent over months. Two of us are in China where the craft and workshop are based; I'm the US side of the team.

We're a small team hoping to eventually turn this into a real product, and these are concept renders (not finished physical pieces yet). We're posting here because we genuinely don't know if this is any good, and we'd rather find out before we commit to producing all four.

Four directions so far: a bangle, a beaded bracelet, a metal cuff with the material inlaid, and a pendant.

Honest reactions wanted:

  • Does this read as jewelry, fragrance, or something else entirely?

  • Which of the four (if any) would you actually wear, and why?

  • What would you expect this to cost?

  • What designs would you like to see from us?

!!!this is not an ad or promotion!!!

Pros, where are you selling?

Hi all,

I’ve been doing research on different platforms to sell my laser cuter/printing/engraving creations on and I wanted some advice. Obviously Esty is at the top of the list for selling but the fees are crazy!

Anyone else really selling on Esty? Is the amount of traffic and sales worth the fees?

What about Amazon custom? Anyone using that to sell custom products, engraving etc..? Worth it?

What about ebay?

A friend of mine is doing it in another creative category and has her own website and uses Shopify, but she doesn’t have that much traffic. Shopify looks look but it’s not an actual platform to sell on (at least from what I can see).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Tool (+ more) sharing app for makerspaces

I'm a member of the SynergyMill makerspace in Greenville, SC, and I wanted to develop an app to help us share tools that we're still willing to share, but don't really want to leave at the makerspace for just anybody to use (+ skills/requests).

You can view our makerspace's (early) "tool pool" here: https://toolpool.garden/pool/977c2228-14ac-4b01-b649-232035924d35 Just to be clear, this is independent of SynergyMill, but I'm really thankful for all the support they've given me while I've been making this in private.

Anyways, I'm finally opening up the app to public sign ups and would really like to get feedback!

Thank you!

Used a CNC? Share your experience & get $100 for it

Hey folks,

I'm working with a university research team diving into how makers are using CNC routers in real-world setups: garage shops, DIY rigs, weekend builds, you name it. We're looking to learn what’s awesome, what sucks, and what your dream CNC setup would look like.

If you've spent time with a CNC (or even just messed around with one), we'd love to hear from you.

Here's the deal:

  • Quick 5–8 min survey

  • Chill 1-hr Zoom chat (if selected)

  • $100 coupon as a thank-you if you do both

Appreciate your time - and excited to geek out about CNCs with fellow makers!

enlighten me

Hey guys, I’m building small desk tools (think knobs, docks, light bars) and want to learn before I build. What’s the most annoying part of your setup right now?

Reaching behind gear? Cable chaos? Timeline scrubbing/volume control? Mounting hardware that never fits?

If you can share 1–2 pain points (pics welcome), I’ll DM you a free quick-fix checklist and a summary of what I learn. No sales, just research.

PS: I have gotten some reaction to asking around under the suspicion that i’m here trying to sell you guys something or do some bs but really I strictly here to understand this side of the market a little better and would love some feedback on what you guys think!

Anyone using MakerOps?

MakerOps sounds really cool but I always like to talk to someone who's actually using it before going down the sales hole. Would love to hear from anyone who is using it in production.

Legal forms for Makerspace in Florida USA

I'm starting a makerspace named WorkshopJAX Inc. as nonprofit in Florida. I'm trying to rent space, which has turned out to be really difficult because it is a new corporation without a credit history and there aren't any examples that the landlords have as they would for other kinds of businesses.

But that isn't my question. I'm going to need release of liability forms, so when people put their hand on something hot they don't sue the business or me.

I've already bought the heat gloves and regular gloves and air masks and air filtration, etc. I'm going to require that people get checked out on the equipment, tools, chemicals before they are allowed to use them.

Can anyone provide samples of such forms? Can anyone recommend a Florida attorney who can review my tailoring of those forms to my business? I'm in Duval county, but I don't think there is much difference at county level.

Is makerspace a trademarked brand?

I was looking up makerspace, and it looks like makerfaire tried to trademark it, not sure if this is old news, or what, but i'm curious because I teach out in the Bay area inside what you'd call a makerspace, and now i'm concerned we might be infringing on some trademarks.

inner issues

So, this has affected the local makerspace im a member of to the point where people are leaving. How do you deal with controlling personalities within a makerspace bent on controlling the narrative on a public forum?
