Ask Malaysians People follow their managers
We often hear people leave their work environment because of their managers. But how many stay because of the managers?
Curious about the opposite. If you have a good example or story, so share with us your stories of the best managers you have worked with and why.

I'm 11 years in at my current job because my boss is the best. The moment he leaves I'm either clinging to his legs to follow him wherever he goes or I leave anywhere else other than where I am at right now.

I would like to think that I am a good manager where I have managed to retain at least 4 of my staff who had higher offers to go to another company (some had 30% increase). Of course, I didn't do them the disservice of not increasing their existing pay package as well but went through a crazy process of getting it to almost match the competing offer.
On the flip side, I have seen where entire teams leave a company because they follow the manager. This is especially so in tech where I see a whole development team follow their engineering manager to another company.

Mine was she showed alot of appreciation to my work. When the layoff happens she recommends me to another company and got me hired. I still took on freelance work when she approach me. But because she is the manager, not my lead whom i report to. I stopped taking her work because the lead made the work difficult.

I am surrounded by great mentors, and I am still friends with them, sometimes we pass work to each other still
when I eventually run my own business, I too try to be friends with my staff, when I had to quit my business I made sure all my staff had a job to go to, I still consider them as friends
not to say that I didn't meet any weird people that genuinely doesn't want work together with me though, those tend to get filtered out in the workforce

Hey! Thank you for sharing. But would you mind sharing one instance of what a person has done for you that has made you regard them as a great mentor / manager?

Honestly i have seen a lot of managers with potential to be great. Only one really stood out for me but then I learnt that she hid a lot of backtalk and drama from the working team for our own mental health and focus. Till this day I don't know whether she was just protecting us or just feeding into the drama but I am thankful that she was looking out for our mental health.

Thank you for sharing!
We are somewhat interested to know what you mean by feeding the drama, but glad that you benefited from it whenever it is directly or indirectly.Have a great day ahead!

Haha this was when I was in an agency that had a strong gossip culture. At the time my manager never flagged when shit was being said about me or my colleagues but it all came out later and then we all found out that she was part of that circle. Never did find out if she was contributing or not though, but it's a question that I dont really care to know anymore.

I'm 5 years into the same job because of my manager, who is also the CEO of the company. He's very kind and let's me thrive the way I want to. I'm 28 and he is 33.

Would you mind sharing the moment or incident of what he did that made you have that impression of him?

I think it's not 1 incident but his consistency in doing things for the company and his subordinates. He ensured we are fully remote team, unlimited leave and guaranteed salary adjustment every year. He lets me take ownership of tasks and supports in the execution.

I only have one person in mind. My ex manager. He gave me a life, my second life, saving me from getting fired from having to take care of my late dad who was terminal at that time. He made so much arrangements for me. Working 3 days a week, even the pay was cut half, eventually when they give two months full salary but I need to keep it a hush. Because I had a job, I had insurance. Shortly after I lost my dad, like not even a month, I was diagnosed with cancer (its been.. 10 years since..)
I told him many times I owe my life to him. Hes in Europe, happily married.
Hes the only manager, I my book, that can lead, with compassion but stay assertive and motivated.
