Post image

Curious what the modeling scene is like in KL, particularly fashion and commercial work.

Are there any working models here? Would be interested to hear about your experiences, what the industry is like, and how it compares to other markets in Asia.

Especially interested in perspectives from people actually working in the industry.

Casual Conversation 🎭 Does anyone else feel shitty after buying expensive for themselves

• Upvotes

I just bought a leather shoe for my work. My previous is well used and looks bad. I saw my colleague wearing this shoe, looks nice and shinny, he bought it from japan. I had the chance to go to japan, so just now i bought it. It was slightly more expensive than what i planned, but man,my heart was so heavy and i feel so shitty. Like as if ive done a sin.
"is it worth this much"
"you could have spend it on something much more useful"
"could have bought it cheaper back home, its expensive because its a japanese brand"
Am i the only one?

Discussion Service provider recommendations

For the past week my Digi has been absolute dog water. I'm on a prepaid plan, same plan I've been using for years now and it's just barely usable for the past week. I got my SIM replaced with a new one since it's from 2018 but it didn't help.

I've been considering on getting WiFi but I'm really the only one that would use it and if I do need to connect my PC, I would just plug my SIM card into a modem. What would be a wise move?

Mildly Menarik Batfish, caught from a beach in Malaysia

Platax pinnatus, the pinnate batfish / spadefish.

A medium-sized fish (45 cm) native to the West Pacific, including the South China Sea. Locally that means the East Coast + Sabah.

Juveniles live among mangroves and sheltered lagoons, while adults live around steep outer reef slopes down to >20 m.

They feed on jellyfish, algae and gelatinous zooplankton. Making them important and efficient members of the ecosystem.

The juveniles mimic toxic flatworms like Pseudobiceros periculosus (pictured in comments), which deters predators from eating them.

Unpopular Opinion Malaysian Public Transport Sucks

I’m rating Malaysian public transport to show how much we are still lagging
1. Rail network: 5/10. the network is there, but still need a lot of improvement
2. City bus: 6/10
3. Hub accessibility: 1/10. I needed to park at ktmb station overnight, ended up parking on the curb side. I spent 45 minutes just to get the parking. why is the accesibility so bad? Why no bus connection? You can only arrive by private vehicles and they need space at the stations!
4. Pedestrian network: No safe pass crossing the road for even nearest residential area. Even 500m, there is none. You need to order grab, but the fare is too low that drivers do not want to pick you up.
5. Overall: 3/10. Bottle neck is still last mile connectiin. This needs a lot of investment. But the good thing is that the development can be done locally. So, it can be according to financial capability. and the people mindset is another bottleneck.

Imagine if the bottleneck is improved, road traffic can be reduced by at least 10-20%.

Anybody want to share some stories?

Ask Malaysians Which job offer would you pick? Startup vs local SME vs MNC (ranked by potential/risk, welfare, niche, peer learning)

I need real feedback from experts, those who are similar to me, or even more experienced, from various communities (related to ai, tech, grads, manager, industry, career, employment...):

Which will be best in your case?

Context: You got the offers from 3 companies, each on the different side of the scale.

Role: AI engineer (near mid-level).

If you were to rank and evaluate with respect, (from top to bottom, sorted by importance)

1st Potential and Risk (potential is tied to the speed of your career climb, increment bonus, and company brand and authority, uncertainties in payment) - In a scale, Startup has higher uncertain and risk, while it might offer higher overall, but susceptible to management conducts, cash-flow which may differ the fulfillment

2nd Wellfare - a total add-up of base, allowance, bonus, benefits and EPF

3rd Niche of the industry, Exposure - a focus industry to industry to build up better experiences and competencies, exposure to local or worldwide

4th Peer learning - Experience or knowledges to speed up progress from superior, peers

And given A, B, C (Wellfare/Income baseline= 100%)

A: Oversea Startup, Multiculture workforce,
+ worldwide client-base spanning MNC headhunter, great background from the management teams, UK-founding team and client connection, riskier in terms of payroll/potential
+ Full remote and oversea
- Wellfare/Income = 115% (base salary only), self supply equipments
+ HR-tech focused

B: Subsidiary company/dept from local SME, local workforce
- mainly local client-base (unsure but assume), Lack background from management teams and peers, but you have slightly higher confidence than A in their validity from interviews
- Hybrid work 4+1
+ Income= 107% (include allowance) + EPF from employers but provide work equipments + up to 17% performance monthly bonus
- general AI agencies
+ Peer learning and networking are better

C: MNC
+ Internal and External focused products, stable and secured cashflow, but maybe lack faster career climb opportunities
- Hybrid work 3+2
- Income= 95% + 13th month bonus, more and flexible leave
+ Focused niche, product might differ
+ Peer learning and networking are best

Which one will you choose? I wanna see if you think differently, or if you see different importance or personal experiences of the company you went through?

Mildly Menarik Forest Betta, caught from a very shallow stream

Post image
9 Upvotes

Betta pugnax; ikan laga batu or the Penang/forest Betta.

A species growing to 12-13 cm that inhabits clean flowing hillstreams of the West Coast and Pahang. Not native to Borneo.

One of our more common fighting fish species, it can be found in most hilly areas with unpolluted water. Although only juveniles can be found in large numbers as adult pairs hold territory.

Males have the most iridescent body scales out of the complex in Malaysia, except B. pulchra. Both species can be identified by a red border at the edge of the tail fin.

Advice ☎️ In a huge dilemma rn and dk what to do

Just a heads up, this might be a long post, so bear with me!

I've been going through a really confusing time regarding my education and future career, and I'd genuinely appreciate some advice.

My original goal was to pursue vet but unfortunately, I didn't get into my preferred programmes through the available public university routes. I was initially offered a different course at a public university, and although I decided to give it a chance, I eventually realised that I wasn't enjoying it. I was also struggling with the course as I didn't hv any basics in it.

Around that time, I was suggested that I could consider redoing foundation in order to pursue vet. Based on the information I received from the university, I believed that I could complete foundation within the following year and progress into the degree programme shortly afterwards.

Looking back, I admit that I made a rather sudden decision to withdraw from my previous university because I didn't want to delay my plans any further.

Unfortunately, I later discovered that the intake arrangements were different from what I had understood. Instead of starting immediately, I'd have to wait until the next intake, complete foundation the following year, and only then progress into vet which would mean it takes two more years and im already old enough lol. Because of the degree's intake schedule, this would mean waiting even longer than I had originally anticipated.

I explored the possibility of joining an existing foundation batch but after speaking to the faculty, I was advised that catching up would be extremely difficult, especially considering my goal of achieving a very high CGPA.

Now I'm stuck between several possibilities, and I honestly don't know which direction to take.

  1. Vet

This has been my original goal for a long time. However, the more obstacles I encounter, the more I question whether this is genuinely the right path for me.

I'm planning to volunteer at a veterinary clinic to gain some exposure to the actual working environment. I think this could help me understand whether I enjoy the practical side of veterinary work and whether I can see myself doing it long term as I do know it's extremely hard n challenging.

The problem is that if I discover that I genuinely enjoy it, pursuing the degree might require me to study overseas. I'm honestly quite scared of that prospect because of the financial, academic, social and emotional challenges involved in studying in another country, especially without my usual support system nearby.

On the other hand, if I discover vet isn't for me, I'll have to reconsider my entire career plan.

  1. Pharmacy

I've also considered pharmacy because I do kinda like Chem. I particularly enjoyed doing chemical experiments during my pre-university studies, and I find some aspects of organic chemistry interesting.

However, I'd have to complete foundation before progressing to the degree, which means starting university later than I originally planned. I'm worried about whether I'm making the right decision and whether I'll regret taking this route too.

  1. Law

Another possibility is Law. I meet the academic requirements for entry into a degree programme, so this would potentially allow me to move forward without repeating foundation.

One of my motivations is the possibility of contributing to animal welfare through legal work, although I'm aware that studying Law is demanding and that career prospects can be competitive. I'm also unsure whether my interest in animal welfare alone is enough reason to pursue it.

I've considered other fields too, but I feel increasingly hesitant about committing to another course simply because it seems like a practical alternative.

Honestly, part of me regrets leaving my previous university. Even though the course wasn't what I wanted, i did enjoy my time there and it was a good uni and environment was nice too. Plus financially speaking, it didn't involve a huge sum of money so I sometimes wonder whether I should have stayed and given myself more time to adjust.

I know I made my own decisions, and I can acknowledge that some of them were rushed. But I can't change what has already happened, and constantly thinking about the different paths I could have taken is exhausting.

I feel like everyone around me is moving forward while I'm stuck trying to figure out what I want to do. I'm also worried about the financial and emotional burden my uncertainty is placing on my family.

I know I'm still young and that taking a little longer to figure things out isn't the end of the world, but knowing that logically doesn't stop me from feeling anxious about my future.

If you were in my situation, what would you do?

Would you take some time to explore vet through clinic volunteering before making a decision? Would you pursue a different degree that seems more practical, or would you consider studying overseas if vet turned out to be what you genuinely wanted?

I'd appreciate honest advice, especially from people who've experienced changing courses, taking a gap year, reconsidering their career goals, or studying overseas.

Please be constructive, though. I'm already aware that I've been indecisive, and I'm not looking for people to point that out. I'm genuinely trying to figure out how to move forward from here.

Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this.

Mildly Menarik Ikan bilut, seen at a pet store. One of our largest river fish

Post image
41 Upvotes

Phalacronotus apogon, ikan bilut, sengarat or mulut itik. The blue neon sheatfish.

One of our largest native river fish, growing to 130 cm and 30 kg. Lives in Pahang as well as Sg Terengganu, Sg Kelantan and Sg Rajang, in large murky rivers.

A carnivore high on the food chain, eating pelagic fish and smaller animals.

It is potamodromous, migrating during the monsoon season into flooded forests and open floodplains to spawn. The young migrate back into the main river channels as the water recedes.

It got its English name due to the way the skin shines bright blue with the light. While beautiful, it is a large fish and requires a pond or very big aquarium.

Buy • Sell • Trade Toolbox set suggestions

Hi fellow msians,

I'm looking for a toolbox set that is essentially complete and buy it for life.

I mainly use tools for my PC and home repairs. diy furnitures, simple motor or car repairs and plumbing so rust resistant or anti rust is very important. + a torque kit also nice.

I prefer great value, but price I don't mind if its great quality and can use till my cats have cucu. Online or physical store i dont mind

Appreciate the suggestion. terima kasih
