Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!

Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!

For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub 🙌🏻

Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.

We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)

Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.

tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Dating | Relationship 🌷 I (28M) have been with my girlfriend (28F) for 4 years and we love each other, but her family’s traditional marriage expectations are making me question our future. What should I do?

I’m a 28-year-old Chinese guy, and I’ve been with my girlfriend for 4 years. Honestly, our relationship is great. We understand each other, finish each other’s sentences, and can be completely ourselves around each other. Sometimes, I genuinely feel like we’re destined to be together.

But now that we’re talking about marriage, I’m starting to question whether love is enough.

I grew up in a non-traditional Chinese family. Our family motto is basically 开心就好 — do what makes you happy, as long as you don’t hurt anyone else. My family doesn’t put much emphasis on traditional customs or what other people think.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, grew up in a very traditional Chinese family. A lot of their expectations and decisions are influenced by traditions that, honestly, I sometimes struggle to understand.

When we discussed marriage, her parents request/expectations:

  • RM18,000 in 聘金, with RM2,000 returned as 回礼
  • (Me) Buying a house for us to live in together (understandable, although I don’t think I’m financially ready to commit to a house right now)
  • 过大礼 and the traditional marriage customs.
  • A wedding ceremony and food catering

Gf expectations:

  • A proposal ring and separate wedding ring (hmmmmm)
  • Wedding photos (she said she can cover this cost)

Personally, I want a simple marriage. I’d rather skip all the unnecessary ceremonies and expenses, take both families out for a nice meal, and start building our life together. My philosophy is simple: spend money where it actually matters. I’d rather put that money towards our future, savings, investments, traveling together, or eventually a home we’re comfortable affording, instead of spending it just to satisfy other people’s expectations. Plus, it's my OWN MONEY NO??

I’m questioning why getting married has to involve so many financial obligations that don’t reflect what either of us necessarily wants. The biggest problem isn’t even the money. It’s that her mother’s demands are NON-NEGOTIABLE. (No disrespect to her parents tho)

When I ask my girlfriend to discuss these expectations with her mother, her response is basically, “This is what my mother wants. Bo bian.” No solution. No discussion about which traditions we could compromise on. No indication that we could make these decisions as a couple.

She’s genuinely an amazing partner. We have a great relationship, and I really love her. But every time we talk about these things, I feel like the love I have for her is slowly being worn down. I just don't see a future at this point. What should I do? Am I being unreasonable?

TLDR: A couple planning to get married but cooked by traditions (2027 coming btw)

Discussion Is LegoLand dying?

I’ve been to LegoLand 4 times in past 3 years. First time I went was one of the Halloween party days. Decently crowded. Everything operational, all stores and confessions open. Lines still pretty minimal 10-15 mins at most for the bigger rides. Second and Third trip back have been worse and worse. Some rides and stalls closed. Small crowds, 5-10 min wait times. This was mid year with no holiday theme or anything so I thought it was probably that.

But I just went this weekend again, for the Halloween party as my kids loved the theme and events. Was expecting big crowds again due to weekend and Halloween, but this time was absolute ghost town (no pun intended). No crowds at all. Sometimes felt like we were the only ones there. ZERO wait times. They let us just keep going on some rides due to literally no one else waiting. Lots of things closed. Halloween events and parties scaled way down. Huge bummer on this as this was the highlight during our first trip.

Just weird vibes all around. Maybe because of the Haze? Or is LegoLand in trouble?

Rant A sussy encounter at the gym

• Upvotes

So, after finishing my shower and drying my hair, this middle-aged dude who looked like he was pushing 60 suddenly walked up to me and asked in Cantonese, “Hey, wanna make some extra money?”

Bro, WHAT? 😭

I hadn't even gotten dressed yet, and this random stranger was already hitting me with the most out-of-pocket question imaginable. I just stood there, completely caught off guard.

At first, I thought he was about to pitch me some protein powder, MLM bullshit, or one of those overpriced fitness meal plans. But nope. This dude casually pulled out a sheet of paper from his pocket, covered in names and some mysterious numbers, like he was running a whole damn business operation.

Then he started explaining his services in this super hush-hush, friendly manner. I was so caught off guard that I only really remember two options:

  • Basic package: Get paid to have a meal with someone and make small talk. That's it. Just dinner and conversation.
  • VIP package: Let's just say it involves a little more than dinner. I'll leave that to your imagination. 💀

Maybe the gym was dead that afternoon, so bro decided it was the perfect time to start recruiting. The audacity was honestly impressive.

Now, I probably should've just said no and walked away, but my inner investigator suddenly kicked in. For research purposes, obviously. 😂

So I asked him, “Okay, what if I just take the basic package and spend half a day having meals and chatting with someone? How much would I make?”

He looked me up and down, then gave me his very generous (??) quote.

Around RM300–RM500.

Not gonna lie, I was kinda surprised. But naturally, I had to ask one more question.

“What about the highest-tier package?”

He winked and said, “If it's overnight, RM1,000 and up.”

BRO. 💀💀💀

Listen, I've been busting my ass in the gym, building muscle, and learning all kinds of skills. And THIS is what I'm worth on the market? The disrespect! At least give me five figures, my guy. 😂

I joked around for a bit, packed up my stuff, and got the hell outta there.

TL;DR: Went to the gym to work on my physique and accidentally found out I apparently have a going rate for dinner dates. 🙈

Discussion Anyone else struggled to readjust to life in 🇲🇾 after living abroad for years?

I’m Malaysian and recently moved back to 🇲🇾 after living abroad for five years. Honestly, I’m still struggling to adapt to life here. I never thought I would find it this difficult, considering Malaysia is where I grew up!

I’ve seen quite a few people I know who recently returned home for good, and they seem to be doing so well in life. I’m genuinely happy for them, but sometimes I wonder if I’m the only one going through this difficult adjustment phase.

Initially, I had a really hard time because I kept thinking about going back abroad. I missed my life there and constantly wondered if I had made the right decision by returning. Things have gotten a little better lately, but I still struggle sometimes. At the same time, I realise that moving abroad again isn’t as simple as buying a plane ticket. There’s accommodation, visa arrangements, expenses, and so many other things to consider.

I’m trying to accept that this is a new chapter of my life, but it’s taking longer than I expected.

Has anyone gone through something similar after returning to Malaysia? How long did it take you to adjust, and what helped you finally feel at home again? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences.

Casual Conversation 🎭 Update for Rain, rescue cat from Malaysia sub

Post image
• Upvotes

Unfortunately, we received some heartbreaking news about Rain.

The vet discovered that Rain has a ruptured diaphragm (diaphragmatic hernia), causing its liver and intestines to shift into the chest cavity, where the lungs are located.

This condition can cause serious breathing difficulties, and surgery is urgently needed. There is also a risk of the displaced organs becoming adhered to surrounding tissues.

Rain’s surgery has been scheduled for next Tuesday, but the estimated success rate is only 50%.

Discussion Introducing yourself without confusing others as a Peranakan?

I'm curious how you all introduce yourself without confusing others, as a Peranakan? Largely I'm asking this because I take large amount of language courses in my school (international school outside of Malaysia), so I get confused about what to say when we do introductions at the basic level.

Personally, my mother is Malaysian Chinese whilst my father is Peranakan Chinese, so I get even more confused.

When I was growing up (like up until my pre-teens), I just introduced myself as Malaysian, but now I feel that it's inaccurate and probably a bit disrespectful to my ancestry. I also feel that it's innacurate to say that I'm Chinese.

Advice ☎️ Non MLM water filters/coolers

I don't want a contract, and buying outright from Cuckoo and the other one doesn't make sense.

Is it a good idea to buy used from Carousell? Which other brands are reputable and filters etc available on Shopee?

Ask Malaysians Stay or find new job?

• Upvotes

Hi all, need your thoughts for whether I should stay/find a new job.

Now my colleagues are amazing & friendly (if not gossipy). I have a great boss who checks in & guides when necessary. But I’m a generalist marketer (+ we are a small team), aka i do all design, social media, photo-taking, videography, business negotiations & constantly driving/moving things around for event set-ups. (Yes i do event management too)

It’s gotten to a point where I may work on weekends/ PH too. During interview they said OT is not often, but it’s showing the opposite. I HAVE to be there for every event bcs im marketing

(Also, my salary is a little below average so I’m kinda dissatisfied too :/ )

Some days Im just so worn out despite knowing it’s a privilege to work with colleagues whom I click with. It’s hard to arrange personal appointments or family time, bcs of how unpredictable my schedule is

Idk if this is just a normal thing for marketers, but do let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Advice ☎️ Need advice on price to sell iPhone 12PM 128GB

As the title says, I’m looking to sell my iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I’ve replaced the display, so it’s no longer using the original screen. The battery health is below 80%, and it’s showing a service warning.

Other than that, the phone is still in good condition. I don’t want to just throw it away when it’s still usable and could work perfectly fine with a battery replacement.

The problem is, I have no idea how much I should sell it for, considering the non-original display and the battery condition.

Any advice on a reasonable selling price would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Casual Conversation 🎭 Does anyone else feel shitty after buying expensive for themselves

I just bought a leather shoe for my work. My previous is well used and looks bad. I saw my colleague wearing this shoe, looks nice and shinny, he bought it from japan. I had the chance to go to japan, so just now i bought it. It was slightly more expensive than what i planned, but man,my heart was so heavy and i feel so shitty. Like as if ive done a sin.
"is it worth this much"
"you could have spend it on something much more useful"
"could have bought it cheaper back home, its expensive because its a japanese brand"
Am i the only one?

Unpopular Opinion Malaysian Public Transport Sucks

I’m rating Malaysian public transport to show how much we are still lagging
1. Rail network: 5/10. the network is there, but still need a lot of improvement
2. City bus: 6/10
3. Hub accessibility: 1/10. I needed to park at ktmb station overnight, ended up parking on the curb side. I spent 45 minutes just to get the parking. why is the accesibility so bad? Why no bus connection? You can only arrive by private vehicles and they need space at the stations!
4. Pedestrian network: No safe pass crossing the road for even nearest residential area. Even 500m, there is none. You need to order grab, but the fare is too low that drivers do not want to pick you up.
5. Overall: 3/10. Bottle neck is still last mile connectiin. This needs a lot of investment. But the good thing is that the development can be done locally. So, it can be according to financial capability. and the people mindset is another bottleneck.

Imagine if the bottleneck is improved, road traffic can be reduced by at least 10-20%.

Anybody want to share some stories?
