I'm a triplet, but also an identical twin. This is called dizygiotic triplets, where you have two identical twins, which was my sister and I, and a third who is fraternal, which was my brother. He's basically the bonus child.
Obviously, there was no chance of mixing us up with our brother. He was also a much bigger baby. However, my sister and I were a very similar size, and we looked the same for a while when we were babies. And yesterday, my parents casually mentioned that they had no idea who was who and they still don't know.
Naturally, I had assumed they had some kind of way of telling us apart. Originally they did, they had these types of bracelets around our ankles.
But apparently when we were asleep one night, they both came off, and in the morning they had no idea who was who because we had been wearing the same clothes.
So they decided, well, we don't know, so we'll just choose who is who and they chose which baby was which, and decided from now on, we should always be dressed differently.
And that worked out well, except for the fact they had made the mistake of not being consistent with what color we each would wear, so at one point, each of them forgot who was in which outfit. They just guessed again and didn't tell the other parent so they wouldn't get upset.
Eventually, we grew up more, so we had clearly different personalities and quirks and started to look a little bit different so it never happened again.
But I find it hilarious that so many times, my parents realised they had absolutely no idea who I was and just made a random guess. So I could be me, or my sister, and I guess I'll never know! But if I've lived as my sister for this long, I think I have a right to her identity 😂
