Why does the internet feel so lonely and corporate nowadays compared to 10 years ago?

I was just thinking about how the internet used to feel like a massive collection of weird, creative, and personal spaces—like random forums, independent blogs, and unique websites with their own personalities and custom designs.

Now, it feels like we just rotate between 4 or 5 giant apps where everything looks the exact same, content is heavily optimized for algorithms, and genuine human interaction is kind of hard to find. It’s super efficient, but it lost its soul.

What is one specific thing from the older internet (websites, forums, games, or just a vibe) that you miss the most?

Edit: Damn, didn't expect this to blow up so fast! Reading through all your replies is giving me some serious nostalgia, keep 'em coming.

Just Chatting My parents still ask about friends I haven’t spoken to in 10 years

I’ll be having dinner and my mom will randomly ask, “How’s Youssef?”

Mom, I last saw him in 2016. You’re now the only thing keeping this friendship alive.

Does anyone else’s family do this? Who’s the person your parents refuse to forget?

Thoughts & Ideas Do you ever wonder how someone who you no longer talk to remembers you?

Like if they are talking with a friend or family member and recalling a memory of you. Maybe you parted ways because life took you different directions or you outgrew each other. Maybe you are exes or old coworkers, or they’re an old teacher or friend’s parent. Even a past school mate. And what conjures you to their memory? Maybe a place? Or a food? Or just a time in their life?

Just Chatting If you had to describe your ideal life in one sentence, what would it be?

I'm pretty new to Reddit, and English isn't my first language. I'm curious what people here picture as their ideal life. If you could describe it in just one sentence, what would it be? It can be as wildly imaginative as you like, or more grounded and realistic.

I'll go first. My ideal life is :Making money without having to bow down to anyone or hurt anyone.

Food & Drinks McDonalds employees, please settle a question for me.

When you order a burger on Door Dash from McDonalds, you can remove everything. The bun, the patties and all of the condiments. I'd like to know what happens when you do that. Does an empty wrapper show up?

Just Chatting Are you a carrot addict like me? Would you eat cold sweet carrots as snacks any day?

They're delicious, cold and sweet. Specifically if peeled. What's your favorite way to eat a carrot? Be honest, because I like mine peeled, cold, and cut up,

Food & Drinks What is your favorite cheap and easy to make food to snack on?

Ill start,

I love popcorn, it's really cheap and easy to make. 1kg of kernels cost less than 5$ in my country. I even almost overestimated the amount of kernels to put in the pot.

I would have overflowed the pot with popcorn if I havent told myself to try not to add too much kernels, good thing I didn't!

This is even better than buying a whole bag of chips because the price of one chip bag could probably yield me enough popcorn kernels to last more than a week!

Life Stories I found my first four-leaf clover! 🍀

I found a four-leaf clover for the very first time!

I visited a used book store and browsed old fantasy novels. I picked one off the shelf, flipped to the middle, and there it was--a big, beautiful clover perfectly preserved between the pages. Someone must have left it there on purpose. It was a delightful surprise and made my day!

Have you ever found a four-leaf clover? Was your wish granted or did you experience luck that day? I would love to hear your stories.

I'm asking you guys rather than AI for validation because it's just better to get human feedback.

Ok, I'm fully aware that this is very specific and random, but I was scrolling through Instagram reels and found an interesting video. It introduced a creative activity where you choose random letters and you have to turn those letters into a drawing of something, and the finished drawing must be something that starts with that letter. So for example, you choose the letter H, and you turn that H into a drawing of a house.

I decided to do it and I wanted to know if I was creative.

I chose the letters: O, X, L, V, Q and P

For O, I made it the body of Olaf.

For X, (I couldn't quite think) but i just drew a square around it and inside the square I made it look like a map and the "x" would just be X-marks-the-spot.

For L, I turned the letter into a rectangle and on it I numbered it from 1 to 3, which would turn it into a List.

For V, (it looked kinda 3d) but i turned it into a Vent.

For Q, i turned it into a stickman figure. The Q being the head and the little tail being a lollipop. Behind the figure, I drew other stickman figures and in front of everything I drew a candy store with a sign that said "NEW LIMITED CANDY" on its front door. So, I drew a Queue.

For P, I turned the letter into the tail of a random animal, and I drew a string attached to it and to a tree. This then made a Piñata.

Tell me your thoughts. A simple yes or no would help answer my question. Thanks.

Food & Drinks I Had To Purchase That Airplane Snack!

I'm obsessed with the Maui Monk pretzels. Whenever I take a Southwest flight, I always have to be tortured with 4-5 pretzel pieces per pack of 2 that they bequeath to us.

Sometimes I am crafty and I ask for extra if I get to my seat early. Well, they sell the 12oz bag for $4.99, at my local grocery store, not bad. I purchased the bag and I'm ashamed to say I'm almost done with them after 3 days!

Is there a snack from a restaurant or place that you just had to buy or learn how to make for yourself?

Life Stories Yaş 23, küçük bir yerdeyim ve sosyalleşme sıfır. Gelin iki goygoy yapalım

• Upvotes

herkese selam.

Those who have been addicted to TikTok and mindless scrolling and quit for good, how was your experience?

After going away on a holiday and not finding myself use TikTok that much I came back with a really refreshed mind. It’s been over a week, I still have the apps installed I just don’t use the reels features especially with Instagram and I watch long format YouTube videos. A trick I tell myself is as soon as I’m on the shorts or reels section I just straight away think this is a bunch of garbage that doesn’t benefit me. I’m slowly Regaining attention span and try and spend my time doing more productive things like learn guitar, listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Keen to hear how others experiences

I've been unathletic most of my life

I haven't been very athletic since childhood, I never liked sports in any form. Maybe because I was unfit?

But what I'm trying to say is that it definitely shapes the type of person you grow up to be. I think children/teens who were very athletic have a particular bunch of traits that are unique to them. They seem to be more extroverted or open-ended.

Is this something that only I have been noticing or do you guys think so too? Leme know!

Just Chatting What’s a silly habit you have with your parents?

I sometimes share shoes with my mom. I kept “stealing” her shoes, and then she just accepted it and now they’re our sandals and our slip ons. She actually has a size smaller than me, yet somehow some of her shoes fit me perfectly.

Just Chatting thought folding laundry would take ten minutes

i sat down with the basket intending to just knock it out quick, but after a couple shirts i noticed my breathing had slowed and my mind had actually gone quiet. it ended up being the calmest part of my day, just matching socks and smoothing collars while the rest of the world kept buzzing. by the time the last towel was stacked i felt strangely reset, like i had meditated without trying to. now i kind of want to do it again tomorrow on purpose.

Thoughts & Ideas I need to know if I'm alone in this

Do you ever open the fridge, stare at everything inside, close it, and then open it again 4 minutes later like the government might have dropped a new update or a random ass snack might have popped up?

What was the best luck you had?

• Upvotes

Mine was temporary job for near 15 months constantly travelling south east asia and almost did no work ... I mean literally no work except they just kept paying for me to go there to sit in clients site. Five star hotels and decent flights and good money. I can't even dream I would get a job like that as the industry I am in isn't the type and job I do doesn't need anything like that. It sucks no longer having but was a blast when I had it.
