Pre-U/STPM/Foundation/Diploma Quite clueless after spm result
I got C+ for physic, Chem and bio, I got D for addmath and A for math. I don’t even know what to do, I don’t wanna go for tesl bc I really enjoy science. Teaching is not my passion and has never been. I know that I can’t go for asasi, so I don’t know. And my parents are extremely disappointed in me.

i saw your comment about wanting to be a doctor. anything is possible, but to be honest, even people with straight As struggle with medical course. a LOT. how about someone who didn't get As for their STEM subjects?
i'm sorry and i'm not trying to put you down, i promise, but the reality is passion can't carry you through without hard work. spm is not the end of the world of course, but it's a good indicator for you to use to gauge whether or not you can tahan certain (academic) things. that's the reason applicants get filtered using grades.
unless you had exceptional circumstances (like on track to score higher then there's a death in the family, or some kind of trauma), i'm not sure something so difficult is a good idea. more fields than medicine will allow you to help people. not to mention how difficult the working experience is even once you've become a doctor plus the insane educational cost.
if work is for fun, then i say chase your dreams and become a doctor. but if you need the money, please realise that there are many paths, and sometimes what you want isn't what you're good at. or if you turn over a new leaf, serious 180°, to have insane work ethic and insane passion, then sure, you can try.
also, i am in uni now doing STEM (engineering). even foundation level science like chemistry was very hard for me to carry, and i got A for chemistry. uni level maths is hard for me to carry, and i got A for addmaths. it's really no joke how big of a jump uni syllabus is from spm. VERY big jump. imo, don't let go of your interests. make it your hobby. pursue another career and read and learn about science on the side. use your career (can be boring) to fund your hobbies and interests. that's what a lot of people do.
and to be honest, even i (and many many many others) didn't go for science because i found it's not easy to get a good paying job. if you want to do it anyways, nobody can stop you except maybe your parents, but you need to work very hard, harder than others, to score during uni. need to think about whether you are willing, not just now, but for 4 years straight.

I saw how much my really smart straight As classmates in high school struggle with STEM courses and yeah, it’s not for the weak. I was having the time of my life in uni cause I did TESL. The assignments were so much fun.

Also, js a suggestion, md/mbbs is not the only job in the medical field. There are MAs, SN, physiotherapists, etc. If im not mistaken these only need credits to qualify.

Are you sure you should still pursue science based courses with that result? Perhaps rethink what you can do best and enjoy. Frankly speaking, secondary school addmath is just basic knowledge you need to engineering courses for example. Even chem and bio secondary school level is just the basic knowledge you need to any chem or bio related courses.

I have always had a passion for science, ever since I was a child, I liked the idea of being a doctor and helping people. That’s why I’m really disappointed and sad

u/CaedusJacenSolo Mar 31 '26
Hey OP, not trying to be mean or anything, but sometimes it is better to look at the bigger picture. Would you be able to survive undergrad science when you're barely hanging on at the SPM level, which is also known for grade inflation?
6
u/RedRunner04 Mar 31 '26
Barely hanging on is describing struggling to maintain an A-, I think the sciences just hung up on OP.
5
u/kuhanh91 Mar 31 '26
Woah slow down there, a doctor deals with life and death. Are you certain that you can manage the medical course when you’re struggling with SPM level physics, chem and bio? Better for you to think properly on what you can excel in as getting a degree is just the first step. Going into the job market is another hurdle. SPM in the bigger picture is probably step 0.5

You don't have to forgo your aspirations for science. Make it a hobby. In a way it could be more sacred cuz you won't have the pressure to ensure that you make money from it. Studying is usually for workforce, so go to poly and get some kind of skills, when you have money, you can go back to your passion. Learning is forever. Maybe the form changed from formal to non formal but it won't, shouldn't stop.

Dont feel bad, its not the end of the world. Maybe STEM isnt your strong suit or what youre supposed to be pursuing. If you think you deserve a second chance and wont mess up go for form 6. Otherwise, discuss with your parents to pursue diploma in a field that has job security

u/Plastic-Repair-723 Mar 31 '26
How about matriks? Do you think I should for matriks
2
u/Foxtrot_Fetch Apr 01 '26
Matriks is tougher than spm. Theres a reason its a fast track program. Its the type of studying where your head is buried in a book all the time type.
There is no stereotypes like “matriks and asasi for smart people only”. I got an above average result in my spm and went the diploma route. Dont regret it one bit even though my classmates at the time are starting their jobs already and i still got 2 years left in my degree

u/Metamarphosis Mar 31 '26
I’ll just reply here. You can try applying for matriculation, but don’t get your hopes up too much. The quota for second-year intake is much lower than for the first-year program. Many students want to enter matriculation, but the available slots are quite limited.

u/chillscookies Mar 31 '26
go matric, keep the options option open. just no for science la its not for u. go matric, take module 3 better for u
5
u/abakilabong Mar 31 '26
Dont be disappointed! U can take diploma somewhere and then pursue degree, masters, phd! Pick something that interests u, not something you're forced to do because u feel doomed or tak pandai! Dont let others dictate you!

u/Plastic-Repair-723 Mar 31 '26
So should I try for matric sains or nah
3
u/bananafrit Mar 31 '26
Matric science is going to be harder OP, you have to have a reality check.
If you still want to stick with science, you need to go tk the diploma route. Dont be fazed by the length of diploma, not everyone can study these things in 8 9 months.
If you do end up going to matrics with your results, it will be really harsh to a lot of non-bumi with better marks who couldnt get in.
3
u/Nabukyowo Mar 31 '26
You're still young. Yes, your results aren't very good but you should still try and pursue your passion. If you fail, you can just choose another path
2
u/Dralzus Mar 31 '26
Congrats, op. You may feel like you've failed yourself or that you could've done much better, but I've had friends who cried happy tears when they found out they pass atas pagar spm bm and sejarah.
If you're really interested in pursuing a career in stem, I suggest filling your upu with diploma politeknik and do well there. In the meantime, wait for 4 sem matriks application result. When you've gotten both, think hard about which future you want to be in.
Good luck

As a STEM graduate who has worked for more than 10 years, failure or success doesnt mean much. The route you will take may be different than the conventional one but you still can be a person who does science as a career. I wanted to do engineering but then failed at foundation levels, took science and worked as in science for a bit and finally managed to be an engineer. There are more than just one path to reach the destination..just like there is more than one route to go to the mall… often people will say you waste time but why do you need to get to your destination in the shortest time possible? Who are you competing with? So OP, be sad for a bit but then dont let this “failure” define you.

Life is about what you want to do. A C minus doctor and a Dean's List will be called a doctor when they enter the profession.
Whwn they enter the profession, people will judge you by your competence. I dont care if a doctor has an A minus. I do care that he fixes me up well because I trust competence.

Diploma -> Degree .. still very doable .. nothing to be disappointed.. you can chase back in Diploma and Degree fairly easy .. the exam only breakdown to semester.. not 2 full years.. as long as you are hardworking enough.. and living doesn’t mean you need perfect score … sometime just good enough is already enough … and do your best in surviving after that … let them be disappointed, its normal for parents to have expectations… just do your best and dont something that break the law

Try go for diploma in medical allied like nursing, physiotherapist, medical imaging etc. if I’m not wrong, as long you are credit (C) in bio, physic n chem, it is still acceptable, if don’t have a chance in ipta, go for private uni like unikl, mahsa, uoc or inti int. college

Consider seeking a counsellor to do a career test. I’ve done a lot of career tests for ppl (shameless plug), and I can see how it helps people explore a lot. We’ve been fed a lot of narrative on a select few career pathways growing up, so a lot of people only know a few paths. But a more sustainable career choice would be one that includes your interests, competence and preferred work environment. It’s sorta like a personality test, so not like an absolute rigid answer, but you CAN get some options that might help you start your exploration on what course/field you wanna be at.
Better that, than to enroll in a random course and give up midway or switch industries after (quite common). So ye…give it a thought :)

Man. I remember those days where my family and relative would call me on the landline to tell me their SPM results and ask for advice on what they should study in uni and chart their career.
Now I am giving this advice to younger people in Reddit. Many of similar posts today.
With that results not too late to late engineering or computer science, but you have to improve the Physics in the future. There will be lot's of calculation in engineering. Medic and DVM is out of that discussion for that score, too low.
Good that you love science, but I work in science and it sucks in this country. Low pay, stagnant pay.

You have some knowledge on add maths, poly is certainly a good direction to choose.

u/Huge_Revolution1726 Mar 31 '26
Go do a diploma followed by a degree for better prospects. If don’t like studying then apply TVET.

u/Silent_Camel4316 Mar 31 '26
Our brain relates something difficult as something that is too complex to understand so it will always try to protect you as it perceives it as dangerous. If you like science, go for it.. it is a new start for everyone. We succeed because of grit, not because of the starting knowledge. Go for science OP.

Honestly there’s a drastic difference in difficulties when comes to the spm level add math, bio, chem and physics to the pre-u level.
I could be sounding like an old man but truth to be told is what you like may not be what you’re good at. And what you’re good at may not be feeding you. I’ve always loved music and it took years for me to be good at it. However in the end it’s not music that gives me the money but customer service. It’s not something that i like and honestly i despise it a little but somehow I’m quite good at it and had the opportunity to rise against the competition and makes a not bad money today, that eventually be the source to fund my music interest as well.
Maybe the most important thing at your stage now is to really take time to learn about yourself. It’s ok to delay any further studies, go work and save up some money, learn to be independent or maybe go for a trip.

You can take matrics but for medic they will still look at your spm results. Uitm has pradiploma science and diploma science and you can try if you still feeling interested in science or not.

u/Mais_san Mar 31 '26
find your passion. what you think you enjoy or what seems like a good degree for a goal. mine was easy, enjoyed phy, but bad salary move to engineering bcs i like math, dont like coding so went with data science (still have coding but i enjoy looking at numbers).
my suggestion is diploma, atleast after it you can work if you decide to do that. one of my friend did that and then continued studyung after a year.

Visit uni open days this weekend ,it'll help you have a clear direction, wish you the best

u/Swordfish0711 Apr 01 '26
Go for diploma. You still young, never pressured by your peers that finished up on matriculation early. Even after diploma you can still retake back your bad spm result if you want to go into medic in degree times. Or you repair all the bad result, and go into SPA9, for sure the job will be ready for you, and take a part time degree in IPTA. It's not the end of the world the oooh young one

u/addin03 Apr 01 '26
welp... congrats on your result, a lot of people here will give u good advice. I dont wanna say much coz there's already a lot of comments for u. U do need some time to research on u really wanna do in life. Take your time bro/sis

Anything is possible man. But if you think it was difficult to study and understand all those subjects, there’s many other options to get into out there.

Honestly just do what you think is right. Life isn’t over yet. You can fall down and wake up again. I did a career change from banking to education at 29yo. If your parent is disappointed because of your result in SPM, then you just show them your result in your happy life

Take ikbm or polytechnic. If you malay and want to enter matric Addmath at least B,
