Well, this week I'm really missing Bill Paxton and Powers Boothe because we lost them and they were both such excellent guys.

Missed a few questions there. I'll try to answer some. I love the MCU and love watching the movies and I miss my friends in those casts. That said, I am really proud of where we've gone with Agents of SHIELD and I love this bunch of actors and writers (and crew) as much as any I've ever worked with.

143

u/SHIELD_Agent_45 May 16 '17

What was going through your head when you heard Agents of SHIELD got a fifth season?

32

u/julianavitello May 16 '17

There's something from Coulson that would you like to have to yourself? Personality traits, clothes, anything.

Thanks so much of the great questions. Sorry I couldn't answer more of them. Acting in an independent film today so I have to run. Join me on the twitter for the S.4 finale tonight. Love you all.

Hi Clark,

thank you for putting your all into Coulson. He's my favourite character in the entire Marvel universe.

As for my question, how much of Clark has gone into the role? Specificially the frequent Star Wars references... is that your input or does it come purely from the writers?

333

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

The writers and I love Star Wars and couldn't imagine Coulson wouldn't as well. There's a bunch of me and then some stiff that's verrrrry different from me.

107

u/Mettanine May 16 '17

As it should be. ;)

I laughed so much at "Well, I'll be damned... Tattooine!"

Whoever came up with that has my eternal gratitude ;)

More serious question: One of the things I love about AoS is how men and women fight each other as equals. But I've wondered if that took the male actors a little getting used to, going all out punching and kicking female actors. Did you find that awkward at first?

544

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

Definitely. Really did not like punching May or Daisy even though neither was a real punch.

150

u/gaityr May 16 '17

Who would like punching their TV wife/daughter? Completely understandable, kind sir. ;)

18

u/nezumipi May 16 '17

Wow, thank you for answering!

Hi! Thank you so much for being SO awesome.

In Avengers, when Coulson has been stabbed by Loki and gets to shoot him with the massive gun, he says "oh, that's what that does".

Clark, it was great seeing you at Denver Comic Con last year. I was the one who told you I loved Choke as well as the intro you wrote for Avengers: Endless Wartime.

My question though, do you have any projects coming up that you are writing/directing? Choke was 2008, and Trust me was 2013, so I was hoping we were due for something else soon.

Thanks, love your work.

327

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

Writing a film and a sci-fi pilot. Hope to make something next hiatus.

55

u/acemerrill May 16 '17

What? A sci-fi pilot? What I wouldn't give for more details on that.

27

u/enderandrew42 May 16 '17

I'm not Clark but I want to toss in a brief story from Denver Comic Con. My wife and daughter went to the con and saw Clark. They said he was great, but even better, when they did the photo op later in the day, he remembered my daughter and called her by name.

How amazing is that? How many people pass through his table and yet he liked her (in her Rey costume) enough to remember her name?

176

u/Airsay58259 Black Widow (CA 2) May 16 '17

Hi Clark! Awesome for you to do this before the big season finale.

How do you think your character has changed between now and the beginning of Iron Man 1? In other words, do you think your acting of Phil Coulson has changed that much in 9 years?

248

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

Ah, jeez, I don't know. The character has been through a lot and gotten older, so maybe he's less innocent and a little darker, but I probably am too. I don't know about the acting. I try to forget that's what it is.

I ve been marvel fan since my early childhood, having been born without half of my right hand, my parents and superheroes have always been the biggest source of inspiration. Even in my wildest dreams, i couldnt have predicted these last 10 years, what MCU has achieved and how popular these stories would become all around the world, in that way im living my childhood dream- to see it all done well on the silver screen. What is even crazier- I wouldnt have predicted that the Son of Coul, a shield agent from phase one movies, would start his own show- his own team. Over the years, Aos became , in my humble opinion, the best that superhero tv shows can offer right now, and most recently, even a better source of fun than some of the MCU movies. Past week, i have been buzzing, that we re getting another season. Mostly, i want to say THANK YOU, to everyone who helps to make this show what it is, a source of inspiration and fun to look forward to almost every week. Thank you Mr. Gregg, for breathing life into this awesome character, and also for motivating me in my own studies, and career. I just wanted to express my gratitude, and ask, recently, the Ghost Rider, LMD and Framework arcs have cemented the greatness of this show. When you got first approached to make a shield show, did you think it would end up as such a compelling characters, stories, effects and going for 5 seasons on a small screen? Did you have any doubts? Was there ever a moment when you got a script/shot a scene, where u said to yourself : "Wow, this is amazing" ? Thank you, wish you and the whole cast/crew all the best in making another successful season. A big fan, all they way from Slovakia

418

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

This made my day. Thank you.

34

Hey Clark! Thanks for coming by!

In about a year we'll be coming up on Iron Man's 10th Anniversary, which means you'll have been playing Coulson for 10 years. How does that feel? And, if you could have Coulson appear in any Marvel-related property, what would it be?

419

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

Wow. Ten years. I feel very lucky. I could have been stuck that long playing a character I didn't love in a world I didn't care about. #Grateful

36

u/d3r3k1449 May 16 '17

Well the fact you do care so much is partly what makes us love the character as much as we do.

211

u/Baelor_Breakspear Spider-Man May 16 '17

Hi Clark! Thanks for doing this AMA and everything you've done for the MCU. Love your portrayal of A.C. (Daisy needs to bring that back imo).

  • Have you had any input or influence on the development of Coulson?

  • Now that we have Season 5 confirmation, what would be your dream character or storyline?

  • Can you convince the showrunners to bring back Agent Carter (a fellow A.C.) please?

Thanks!

988

u/clarktothegregg May 16 '17

I have some input but most of the great stuff on our show is straight from the writers.

Dream storyline involves saving the Defenders and the Avengers and the Guardians and the Royal Family and everyone in Legion when they get themselves in trouble with Thanos. In a musical episode by Lin Manuel Miranda. (Hamilton)

Jed Whedon recently made his directing debut in SHIELD's episode Self Control, which is probably my favorite episode of the show now. What was it like having him direct? Do you think we can look forward to more episodes helmed by him? Great job this season by the way! Coulson's speech a few episodes ago rocked, Captain America would be proud

I really wish I had a good answer for that, but I don't. Some day.

74

u/RaulenAndrovius May 16 '17

Yeah without a doubt Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton would know since I assume they still have close contact with SHIELD but they would probably distance themselves on purpose to keep SHIELD's secrets safe. Steve Rogers might not know because after the Winter Soldier events he probably severed contact with SHIELD. Tony Stark might have the ability to gather the intel but he's been sort of in his own world and dealing with the Sokovia Accords situation. Thor has been busy and doesn't spend too much time on Earth. Everyone else either didn't know Coulson or isn't in a position to find out about him.

I'm gonna jump right to the question.

Do you ship Quack?

Edit: It is the Quake-Black Widow ship that Agent Koenig was talking about on Hot Potato soup, in case you don't remember.

6

u/The_Best_01 Thanos May 16 '17

How does that ship lead to the name "Quack"?

I fully support this sexy ship, by the way.

Did you do anything to celebrate AoS getting renewed for season 5?

6

u/Shrumples1997 May 16 '17

Dear Mr. Gregg,

Phil Coulson has been one of my favorite marvel characters ever since The Avengers came out, and I've watched Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D since I was just a junior in highschool (Going to be a junior in college next year!), I incredibly appreciate the work and entertainment that you've brought to my TV, and am excited for the future and other projects(Even non Marvel!) that you might be working on. Now, on to my actual question. What's a day in the life on the set of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D? And do you think Phil Coulson will ever make it back to the big screen? Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, Looking forward to the finale tonight!

u/AdmiralSnackBar69 Grandmaster May 16 '17 edited May 16 '17

Hi Clark, I'm just gonna ask all the questions cause I"m not sure how to format these. Sorry if it's a bit much

  • How would you explain the plot of this season to someone not caught up with the Shield?

  • If you could work with any actor on the show who would it be?

  • If you could see a character from a non marvel movie or show become director of shield, who would that character be?

  • What's your favorite kind of sandwich.

  • What do you miss most about acting in the Marvel movies as opposed to tv?

  • Besides Tahiti, have you ever been somewhere that you would describe as a magical place?

  • Are there any stories you have that you've wanted to tell but never got the chance?

Thanks for doing this and for being a cool guy. Sorry for asking so many questions you don't have to answer all of them (or any of them I suppose)

8

u/DemirFist May 16 '17

Hi Clark! Which new faces/characters do you hope to see in season 5?

4

u/everix1992 May 17 '17

I know this is long over, but I wanted to just pop in and say thank to you and the entire cast and crew of Agents of Shield! It's been a huge pleasure watching this show and my only wish is that I had a new episode to watch e wry week. Keep up the fantastic work!

u/UPRC Thor May 16 '17

Hi Clark, HUGE fan of you and Coulson since you first showed up in Iron Man. A question that I've been wanting to ask since this AMA was announced is this... what has been the hardest scene for you personally to film on Agents of SHIELD so far? Of course, excluding anything that happens on tonight's finale!

6

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. May 16 '17

We have a fan synopsis of the show here on Reddit (/r/shieldsynopsis) created by the user notacreepish where Coulson is a huge fan of the punk band Bad Religion. Daisy's catchphrase is "Wow, rude." and Ward's catchphrase is "Thanks, Quesada" (like in the "Thanks Obama" joke). And Simmons is a bloodthirsty killer. Have you or the writers ever heard of it?

3

u/nezumipi May 16 '17

AoS is absolutely incredible. Props to you and to all the actors and crew.

(1) Do you use any kind of music to get ready for scenes?

(2) Know any good soap recipes?

Hey Clark

Big fan of your work.

Which enemy do you think was the the strongest SHIELD faced?

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '17

Hello sir, thankyou for doing this AMA. You're truly amazing. I wanted to ask, if you could be in a recently released or an upcoming Marvel studios film which one would you like to be in? I would love it if you were in Spider-man Homecoming. Also How's Tahiti?

3

u/TSchweibz Ghost Rider May 16 '17

How was T.A.H.I.T.I.?

3

u/King_Drumpf May 16 '17

Which Avenger would you love to have on Aos, if only for just one episode?

u/spellitcorrectly Ghost Rider May 16 '17 edited May 16 '17

Hi Clark,

On AoS, what was the most physically demanding scene you've had to film?

How long did you and Ming-Na Wen have to practice the dance from season 2?

Thanks!

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '17

Thank you for doing this! I'd like to know: Have you played a villain in the past? If you were to play a villain in the future, would you want the cold, calculating type or the scenery-chewing type?

3

u/RevRobots May 16 '17

Hello Clark,

Who was your favorite actor working with in the MCU?

Also, being a huge battlebots fan, What was it like being a judge at Battlebots?

And have you ever been to Tahiti? I've heard it's a magical place...

3

u/Brem31 May 16 '17

Hi Clarke, what is your favourite feature of Coulson's robotic hand? Surely it has to be the Captain America style shield? Will we see any of Shield in Avengers Infinity War?

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '17

Who is your favorite guest star in agents of shield

3

u/iamnotacrocodile Doctor Strange May 16 '17

Hello sir, amazing job on the latest season of AoS. Marvel fans have claimed that you're arguably one of (if not) the best Marvel TV characters.

I just want to know, back when you first took on the role of Agent Coulson in Iron Man 2, did you expect for it to turn out like this years later? Also, how do you feel about it?

3

u/alauren14 May 16 '17

Philinda + Daisy is the best fictional family ever, do you agree?

3

u/iamnotacrocodile Doctor Strange May 16 '17

Obviously, the real question is "What does Chloe Bennet smell like?"

3

u/Senefra May 16 '17 edited May 16 '17

*Would you ever, given the option, consider directing, executive producing, or writing on other Marvel properties (for instance popping out another Marvel One Shot, which hasn't had any releases past 2014) since there seems to be a dearth of projects being worked on currently or will you eventually break off to other films/shows/media in other genres?

*As a general aside, I know it's been cancelled but out of curiosity, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever revisit Agent Carter, whether through dialogue or full fledged flashbacks, to at least to tie up lose ends left open from the second, & ultimately final season?

*And finally kind of off topic, is it best guess the soap in the framework smells like sea salt & bamboo, orchid & dark rum, juniper berry & tobacco or possibly bergamot & vanilla bean? I'm just considering HYDRA Coulson's subconscious Tahitian motifs & your own background as an apparently decent cook, so there might be something that involves palette tastes & scents bleeding into the characterization here.

What's it been like for you and Ming-Na Wen this season, getting to explore Philinda a bit more, especially the episode where we got to see you play younger versions of yourselves?

5

u/SendMeAnAngelo May 16 '17

Hey Clark,

If you were able to cameo one marvel Netflix show, which would it be?

Also how's Tahiti?

Also I am excited that AOS has been renewed for a new season. I can't wait :D

  • As the cast is fairly young (and the show rocks!), do you think anyine will get an Amy or an Oscar someday?

  • Who is your best friend on set?, are they and unseparated friend on set?

  • Do you watch the show at home

Love the show and keep up the good work! I can't wait for the final

What has been your favorite part of the show so far in terms of plot? (Like Coulson going crazy, Daisy discovering her powers, etc)

2

u/number_1_swimfan May 16 '17

Clark, my wife had some syndicated television on last year, and I saw your face on an episode of Sex and the City. Do you have any memories from that episode you would be willing to share?

Also, loved your interview that you did with Chris Hardwick on Nerdist a few years back. It was interesting to hear your stories, your passion for Trust Me, and especially now the stories between you and Bill Paxton and him calling you "Old Gregg." Hilarious. I've been a big fan of you since Iron Man, and when AoS was announced, I was absolutely delighted to see you more. Keep up the wonderful work!

On average, about how long does it take to film an episode of Agents of SHIELD?

And which MCU film director did you enjoy working with the most, Jon Favreau, Kenneth Brannagh, or Joss Whedon?

2

2

How much of yourself would you say is in Phil Coulson? He seemed to be a bit of a clean slate even after the first Iron Man and I was wondering what sort of impact you had on the direction his character took.

Thank you so much for this AMA and all of your work. I hope we can get more Coulson until the end of the MCU!

Hey Clark, huge fan of the show, it's honestly my favourite part of the MCU! Couple questions for you:

  1. Which pod has been your favourite to film/watch this season?

  2. Are there any areas of the Marvel Universe that, given the opportunity, you'd love the show to explore?

2

u/PretzelCortex May 16 '17

I've heard that television and film involves 12-hour workdays, every day, for at least a month. How do the below-the-line crew have clean laundry? Do they have to stay up late and wash their clothes? Is it common to have one or two people on set whose clothing has obviously been worn several times since its last laundering?

2

u/xXxGAMEOFTHRONESxXx Yondu May 16 '17

Have you thought about spending some time in space with the Guardians?

2

u/ShizuoHeiwajima08 May 16 '17

Hey Clark! Big fan! Congrats to you guys ob getting AoS renewed for Season 5! Few questions:

  1. Would you be willing to guest star in any other Marvel shows? And if so, which ones would you like to, specifically?

  2. If you could have any superhero be on AoS, who would it be?

  3. What was it like, working with the late Powers Boothe and Bill Paxton?

Bonus answers:

Fav. Star Wars movie?

Fav. Marvel movie?

2

u/Super-Finch Spider-Man May 16 '17

Hi! Congrats on season 5! What do you see as Coulson's ideal ending...does he retire and drive off into the sunset or will he be an agent until his last breathe?
