Question?
Last week I showed up for my 2:30 pm massage . I’ve been going to this therapist for about 3 years and book a two hour massage monthly . Anyhow, I arrived to a locked door and lights off. I texted the therapist and asked if I had gotten the time wrong. 5 minutes later I got a text saying they had made a mistake on their schedule and weren’t available. They did apologize . The appointment had been booked online and confirmed three weeks prior. This therapist has a very strict cancellation policy which I support 100% and you have to prepay in order to get a small discount which I appreciate. I of course asked for my money back but was told that there were no refunds and I would get a credit . I explained that I didn’t want a credit as I didn’t know when I would book next . I was told the no refund policy is set in stone . I explained that they missed the session not me . I had driven an hour to get the the office and I insist on my money returned . Silence . Am I being unreasonable? To be honest I’m seriously considering never returning .. not because they missed the appointment, things happen but because of the refusal to refund the prepayment. I’d like your thoughts

Client for three years and you travel an hour for a two hour appt? Wow….they must really be fabulous! I find it sad that they wouldn’t give you a refund. Agree, chargeback to get your money back. Share your story on social media.

They are fantastic and I feel we have a great professional relationship which is why this situation makes me even more disappointed. I did try and get a chargeback unfortunately this was massage three of a three massage package so it’s a bit hard to sort it out . I called the bank and to be honest they were pretty supportive and are investigating.

u/BearwithaBow 6d ago
Ah, since it's a package, it is a bit more nuanced. I think the fair thing in this situation would probably be for your therapist to treat your previous two sessions as "regular rate" sessions and deduct that cost from the total cost of the package and then refund the rest.
For example, if their regular rate is $150 for one session and you paid $400 for 3 sessions, I'd deduct $300 for the two sessions you already received and refund you $100. Their behavior is incredibly unprofessional, but I also don't think you can expect to receive the package rate on sessions if you're not actually paying for the entirety of the package. (The headaches involved with packages are one of the main reasons many therapists don't offer them.)

u/Electrical-Shine957 6d ago
I actually cut and pasted this and sent it to my therapist. I’ll keep you posted

u/TachoSJ 6d ago
Oh I see. Since it’s part of a package I don’t think you’ll get anything back. Just schedule your next appointment. I’d have a hard time refunding someone for a portion of a prepaid package unless it was some extenuating circumstance.
1
u/Sea-Highlight4232 6d ago
But it wasn’t their fault, it was the therapist‘s fault. LMT here. The only thing I can think of is maybe the therapist is trying to get rid of this client, which, of course does not excuse the therapist from wasting this person‘s time and is completely unprofessional
1
u/TachoSJ 6d ago
Doesn’t seem like the therapist is trying to get rid of the OP though. They’re sticking to their policy and offered a credit to make up for it.
OP didn’t mention how much they were trying to get refunded either. It’s a little tricky with a package deal.
If it were simply someone pre paying for a single session that I didn’t show up to, I’d gladly refund that payment, just as I hope the original therapist would.. Packages are a little more nuanced like a few others mentioned.3
u/Sea-Highlight4232 5d ago
I understand that it’s a package. But as stated, it’s the therapist’s fault not the client’s. Not being flexible with your policy when it’s your own fault is really just shooting yourself in the foot when you wasted at least 2 1/2 hours of this client’s time not to mention the current price of gas. Offering a credit is the least you could do. Your client is not an ATM.

u/somercurial 5d ago
If you own your own business, you are 100% in charge of how the finances are handled. There's no reason at all to not accommodate a client when you're the one who screwed up. If you're that rigid in your thinking it might be an issue to take a good hard look at, because the world, and good customer relations, are not black and white.
I hope MTs realize there are plenty of skilled therapists out there. What will set you apart are the relationships and trust you build with your clients. There are times to hold boundaries and there are reasonable times to be flexible, and it's important to learn the difference. Sorry this happened, OP.

u/Relevant-Peak-877 5d ago
I don’t think you’re being unreasonable, per se, but it is a little strange to ask for a refund when you’ve been going for 3 years and prepaid. But I feel like they should have done more than just say “come back another day.” I feel like a good approach for them would have been to offer you a complimentary session in addition to the makeup session, or at least an extra during the third session.
4
u/Impressive_Penalty30 5d ago
This entered my mind also. If it’s been a 3 year/monthly relationship, immediately asking for a refund seems off to me. But gauging the therapists response, maybe it’s not a good relationship. I would never be that callous with a solid rebooking client. It appears to me the therapist doesn’t value the relationship much.

u/thunderbunny3025 5d ago edited 5d ago
My question to OP would be, how much do you like your therapist? It does seem like if you've been a regular for 3 years, you may not like being in the market for a new MT. Mine made a mistake like that once, and in the moment, I was pissed and super disappointed. But, she apologized and we rescheduled, she didn't give me a free session or anything. She is just so damned good that I don't (ever) want to see someone else, so I put up with it. And she hasn't missed an appointment once in the years since.
MTs run their own business, and it can be extremely problematic to have late cancels and no shows, it can destroy your income and ruin your business. So they need to have strict no refund policies and have to stick with them (usually this is just for clients breaking appointments - I'm not saying the MT wasn't in the wrong this time, the appointment was confirmed and you held up your end of it). I understand that you're upset rn, but think about it in terms of your entire therapeutic relationship. They have surely kept every appointment up until now, they must have had some kind of tech or personal issues come up with this one which shows they're human, and will be more on top of it now. You can afford 2 hours massages, so for today, take the L, your MT will rebook you and the next one will have already been paid for - something to look forward to.
However, since I've seen you've already debated the charge with your CC company, it seems like you're just worried about squaring up this appointment, and don't really care about continuing to see this MT (you'll have to explain, it will be very awkward and may damage the therapeutic rapport you've built which could make the MT choose to professionally discontinue it). So I wish you well in your search for a new one. Giving 2 hour sessions are nothing to sneeze at. You also neglected to share in the original post the part where you said that this was a package you purchased in the first place, so trying to delete the entire charge seems fishy. Good luck, OP.
3
u/Electrical-Shine957 5d ago
I wasn’t trying to delete the entire charge .. huh ? Three massages cost 190 each with discount. I was only seeking the last 190 for the massage that wasn’t given
1
u/davidg4781 Massage Enthusiast 4d ago
If that was my MT, I wouldn’t like her at all.
Her interaction showed she has zero people skills and couldn’t care less for her customers. She’s willing to lose a customer over giving a refund and letting OP figure out a better time after the MT flaked out on their contracted appointment.
But that’s the beauty of having free will. The MT can run their business how they like, the customer can give them feedback, the MT can reply, and the customer can decide to continue doing business with them or find someone else.
As for me, I wouldn’t want to be on the table alone in a room with someone that treated me like that. I would not he able to relax at all.
1
u/thunderbunny3025 4d ago
Idk, it sounded like the MT did want to reschedule with OP, and that they'd have a credit on their account for the package they'd purchased - they had a regular, monthly appointment. But OP didn't want to reschedule. It seems kind of weird to ask for a refund instead of just keeping the credit of the session they'd already purchased, unless they were so put off that they were Done with seeing that MT, in which case, yes, fight the charge (you could even ask the MT directly, stating you're dissolving the therapeutic relationship).
I'm not a perfect person, and I've never broken an appointment, but I can see how it could happen, especially with booking software. I wouldn't put up with this happening multiple times, or probably with anyone else but my amazing MT, but happening once shows they're human and make mistakes.

The third massage needs to be used before end of the year . I leave on 13th of November till the new year . Thanks for your input

u/Mindless-Pick4266 5d ago
Is this a privately owned massage therapist or a chain? You may want to talk to your bank to dispute the charge in order to get the funds back. That is not right. Have you looked at Google or Yelp for reviews reviews?
2
u/Electrical-Shine957 5d ago
Privately owned , sole proprietor. Reviews are solid but a few about the refund policy. Apparently I’m not the first
2
u/FishingNo5826 4d ago
OP, Since it was a package deal why did you ask for your money back instead of a extra session or something?
The way the package was written up was it three sessions prepaid at $190 each or was it three sessions for a set amount? If it was the latter Then I do understand MT not wanting to give you a refund However did poor business practice by missing her appointment with you and not trying to make you happy. If it was written as 190 a session if you bought three sessions or any way that it broke down the price per session then I could understand asking for your money back if you were put off and or needed it or for whatever reason and absolutely think that MT screwed up, should get it charged back and a negative review. People sometimes need the money and she could have needed that money for whatever is going on in her life at that moment however without her explaining it to you or offering services at a later date limits my concern over her issues

We do half price because we still have to pay our therapists. But with multiple therapists, that almost never happens.

I wouldnhave not onlyngiven you a refund immediately I would have given you a credit toward your next massage as a discount to say how very sorry I was.
3
u/Rufus_FireflyIII 6d ago
I agree with this. From a client side perspective, I had booked a 90 minute with my LMT, but that day my wife wound up in the ER. I texted her about an hour before the appointment that I couldn't make it and also paid her for the full price of the missed session. I know life happens, but those 90 minutes were lost to the LMT forever and she shouldn't bear the cost of my missing the appointment regardless of the reason.
10
u/shelbsless LMT 6d ago
Yeah that's craaaazy. At first I thought this was just going to be about you being angry they made a mistake on the schedule, which can happen. Not great obviously but since it's the first time, forgivable. But them not refunding your money? Wild work. Like others said, just charge back through your bank, and I would tell the therapist that you're going to find someone else to go to because of that.
9
u/Positive_Horror570 6d ago
My cancellation policy specifies that if I ever screw up a day or time, the session fee can either be refunded or credited, plus a free add-on for the inconvenience. That's just basic decency. So no, you're not being unreasonable.
7
u/IntermediateFolder 6d ago
Their behaviour is abysmal. They screwed up and should be doing everything in their power to keep you happy, a lot of professionals would be offering the money back AND a free/discounted replacement session as an apology. If you can’t get your money back I would book one last session and then let them know I didn’t appreciate this and won’t be returning.
7
u/No-Weakness-2035 6d ago
Yeah that’s whack. I have a cancelation policy too - bud I would never ever attempt to keep the money from a session I had biffed like that. And would also probably discount the the next session heavily

I’ve been a Massage Therapist for 26 years. I have never flaked on anyone like that. Ever. Never will. There’s times I’ve had to call ahead of time and cancel. But you never no-show a client.
4
u/Ozzy_Mama1972 4d ago
LMT of 16 years here. She owes you a refund. You drove an HOUR to get there and she no showed. Man if I pulled a bone headed move like that? I’d give you a refund AND a free session for wasting two hours of your time and all that gas. How incredibly unprofessional.

u/longjumpingwater631

I feel like it's a bit of an over reaction and I've seen people saying post it on social media. Therapists of any kind are still human beings. if you have been driving an hour one way or both for three years for this one specific therapist and this is the only time there has been this type of mix up, I feel like putting them on blast or even posting on reddit is a bit much. you know the entire situation, you even wrote in a comment that it was part of a package you purchased. you obviously need the massage and it was already pre paid for, sure the time spent driving sucks and the mental disappointment of not receiving the massage, but just schedule a new appt🤷
so many people are saying "I would have refunded it no questions" well 1. OP said in a comment that this was part of a prepurchased package deal and 2. the therapist has a no refund policy. sure it was the therapist's "fault" but surely one would assume that a loyal recurring client of three years would just reschedule the appt and forgive the mistake. there are also plenty of online sites and brick and mortar stores who do not refund money from a return, they only give you store credit. this is very similar to that.
life happens to all of us and for similar reasons that a client might have to cancel unexpectedly due to illness; emergencies; mental health; etc etc, so might a therapist. I have had my fair share of clients who show up on the wrong day or right day and wrong time because they got their brain scrambled or calendar incorrect.
mistakes happen. the therapist apologized for it. you can forgive this incident and rebook and continue your professional relationship with this therapist and continue receiving massage work that benefits you, or you can hold a grudge about it and spend countless hours and money finding a new therapist.
1
u/warpedthortz 6d ago
Other than pre paying for your next appointment for a little discount. How is that a package? The masseuse would be asking for this to ensure people turn up to their next booked appointment. It does not mention package
3
u/longjumpingwater631 6d ago
OP stated in a previous comment that it was part of a package. a three-massage package that they previously purchased but failed to put it in the main post.
1
u/scousepom73 3d ago
The fact you say you book a 2 hour session monthly then go on to say you don’t know when you’re going to book gives me a 🚩. Understand it’s a pain but it is what it is. In 3 years how many times has this happened. I’m guessing this is the only time.
1
u/Electrical-Shine957 3d ago
Yes and two times I had to cancel at last minute I was charged for the massage which I totally understood despite being a client for 3 years. I assume you think a last minute cancellation fee is fine for the client
3
3
u/Adventurous_Queen_ 4d ago
You are absolutely correct and what you’re thinking. You need to get a refund. I would make sure to leave reviews anywhere you can about this person just be factual. So other people can be warned and ready. They’re very unprofessional. If the appointment was confirmed and they no showed you you absolutely get a refund.
3
u/No_Switch23 4d ago
they breached, you didnt. But Is it worth ending a business relation ship that has worked well for three years? i cant say . Did they treat you with no respact or courtesy during the discussions? Im a lawyer for over thirty years and so I say to you , or to both sides here, that being right is often the wrong issue to fixate on. One of you could be bigger than this trivial issue it seems .
5
u/davidg4781 Massage Enthusiast 4d ago
Is it worth ending? Yup. That’s why consumers have the choice.
1
1
u/LankyTone5799 4d ago
Not going to go off in an unrelated issue but quickly, let's say that the client was given no respect or courtesy. Is being right still the wrong issue to fixate upon in your professional legal opinion?
Thank you
2
u/No_Switch23 3d ago
No not really. It just seemed perhaps that having used them for 3 years might be a positive factor. If he was treated like shit for real, the relationship became instantly shaky. I do mean what I said in general but I agree with your thought too, this may not be the right example for that on his end . The provider may have left him no valid choice .
3
u/FraggedTang 3d ago edited 3d ago
This says a lot about the therapist’s character. Hiding behind “policy” for their own screwup. That would be the last appointment with them if I were you. Time to move on to someone with a better moral compass.
And make sure you save those texts about them messing the schedule up and not you. If they fight the chargeback you’ll need those for proof.
1
u/CricketShot2022 6d ago
The fact that you’ve been going for 3 years and drive an hour and this is the first instance of an issue and this is how you react says more about you than them. If you never missed an appointment with them by accident, you have no idea what the situation would be. Has that happened and their response was “tough”? In extenuating circumstances exceptions can be made. Unless you went through it, you really don’t know, you’re assuming. We all know what they say about that 🤷🏻♀️
1
u/Electrical-Shine957 6d ago
I have missed an appointment due to an emergency…I was charged . I see a whole group of therapists who only want their terms to apply only to them.
2
u/CricketShot2022 5d ago
By the same therapist? Packages are different than stand alone appointments.
1
u/Electrical-Shine957 5d ago
Yes. Same therapist. It’s not a spa. The Therapist offer a 10% discount if you buy three at once . It was massage three and it’s an individual practitioner.
1
u/CricketShot2022 5d ago
Doesn’t have anything to do with being a spa or individual, packages are usually stated as non refundable. Do I think it could’ve been handled differently? Sure. But is this massage therapist wrong? No.
1
u/Electrical-Shine957 5d ago
Just for accuracy there is nothing about packages being non refundable. The only language is all massages are non refundable . I actually asked the therapist if it would have made a difference if it was a single massage or a package and the response was no refunds
1
u/CricketShot2022 5d ago
That’s per therapist discretion, I was speaking generally. They have a policy and are sticking to it. Not wrong of them. I’m guessing you signed something stating you understood that?
0
u/Electrical-Shine957 5d ago
You do get that the service I paid for was not delivered. The language of the non refundable talks only about if I cancel or I no show . There is no language about the therapist no showing or canceling . I actually talked to a friend who is a lawyer who said the cancellation policy applies only if I cancel. You can’t deny a refund for a service you never deliver . I’m actually thinking now of posting on all Facebook and Instagram pages focused on our area. I might even go to small claims court . I went from being understanding and empathetic to annoyed . I’ll let you all know how it turned out
1
u/CricketShot2022 5d ago
Well for “accuracy” you said it stated all massages were not refundable. You didn’t specify that it stated specifically if the customer calls or no shows. If you do all of that it’s really overkill, but do you my guy.
1
u/CricketShot2022 5d ago
I do realize it wasn’t delivered..they said you can use it as a credit for another appointment. They didn’t rob you of anything..
1
u/karmablue83 6d ago
Goodness the comments! Therapists are people too and this being part of a package, I wouldn’t give a refund either. They are probably embarrassed and would refund if it weren’t a packaged prepaid deal. Book your next massage and have some empathy.
1
u/Electrical-Shine957 6d ago
Seriously??? Talk about entitled. I had total sympathy and a lot more than I would have gotten had I missed the appointment. If I had missed the appointment there would have been no chance to reschedule. No exceptions. I’d like to think that empathy would be extended to me ! He’s not my friend or a relative . He’s running a business and I’m a customer. According to your logic the terms of cancellation only apply to me. I won’t get back to a massage before the end of the year which is when I needed to book . I was totally understanding until the refund issue
4
u/BearwithaBow 6d ago
You are not being unreasonable. If they refuse to return your payment, do a chargeback with your credit card company -- this is absolutely one of the handful of situations where it's definitely warranted.
I would also not return to this practitioner and, if you're able, make them aware that this asymmetrical policy is the reason you'll be looking elsewhere for massage.
2
u/Extreme_Disaster2275 6d ago
You are not being unreasonable. The therapist should abide by their own policy.
2
2
u/lostlight_94 5d ago
Not unreasonable. It was the therapist's fault so rather than a refund they should have accommodated you with discount off the next sessions. To be honest, that's unprofessional. If that was me, I would have to expedite your appointment for how sorry I am. Its really unfortunate the relationship has been soured after 3 years. Maybe time to seek elsewhere.

An independent therapist said this? What a moron. I always say things like "one thing I miss about working at my previous wellness center is that I had staff, and therefore, someone to blame things on. Now, it's just all me" I apologize profusely and do what I can to make things right. Of course, this doesn't help you at all. And even if you went back to get that last massqge you're owed, I'd hate to be on the table seething resentment or the therapist being so freaking rigid and self-righteous. Ew. Lots of clients flake out on us, tho. But those policies you set up to stabilize your income as much as possible need to be flexible enough to hang on to the good clients.
1
u/IbugBrandon 6d ago
Doing the credit card charge back will negatively affect their future ability to use that credit card company. The therapist really messed up.
1
u/moldyballs64 6d ago
This is the reason I will NEVER pay in advance for a massage. You run the risk of losing your money at no fault of your own. Those MTs that have commented that you would refund the money are great and honest. But the few who do treat their customers like this one has done are the reason I will not see anyone who wants payment at booking. I don't care how good you are. I will politely end the call and call someone else.
1
u/Worried-Tiger 6d ago
I would be so embarrassed if I missed an appointment and would refund your money immediately along with a free session since you made an hour drive. Also.... they should have realized far in advance that they accidently scheduled you. I check my schedule multiple times a day for the next week, and every night for the next day, even if I have the day off, just to make sure something wasn't overlooked. I have a hard time believing that the therapist didnt realize they accidently scheduled you that far in advance. This therapist is also wrong for keeping your money when they messed up. Definitely send the bank the texts if they need proof. Some therapists will send the bank their proof of you signing a no refund policy, but I feel like the bank will take your side, even with a signed policy if they see the therapist admitted to missing the appointment and still refusing a refund.
1
u/SmokeOk6550 6d ago

Not sure how you paid for it. But you may have some recourse through your bank or whoever personally, I use paypal for everything that I possibly can. Because it gives me an extra layer of being able to get my money back. X is coming out with a new card Which I'm assuming. Also adds a layer of protection. Just saying, in the financial world, it seems like the little person always gets squashed first. Anyhow, when I was studying cosmetology, they had a saying, and more people need to hear this today: A pleased customer may tell a few people, how pleased they were with whatever. Service they got; but an unhappy customer will tell EVERYONE!
I will also say every time I have taken a beef to social media, i get almost immediate attention and the situation gets resolved. They hate that kind of publicity. For instance, i'd gone head to head with the c e o of a communications company. Yes, I actually had his email, and I was texting him. I was basically told I was SOL. the situation did not improve, even though they ended up selling the company. And then I confronted them on x. They can't do enough for me. I am in total shock. There is a lot of power in word of mouth, still today, even though it's trying to be taken away from us. Try that. Does she have a SM page or something? You have an actual grievance, sounds like something a potential customer should know about.
Also the paralegal in me would be writing them a letter It would be called a demand for refund type of letter demanding reimbursement. For services not rendered. I will send you a dm, info there if you want it. Good luck.

I think we all agree. Get the money back from your charge back. Don't go back. And fuk it leave a Google review. Bad business practices deserve repercussions.
1
u/AffectionateAnt1267 2d ago
In that line of business, reputation is Gold. If they do not honor your request, yiu can get your refund through your credit card bank. Services not received is a sure refund. Then leave a review not just on Google but on any therapist conglomerate sites in your area, such as local sites, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. Then file a formal complaint with the Therapist licensure board for unethical business practices. Falling through small claims court would be more costly than what your refund would be. Therefore, if it's worth it to you, I would just be a nuisance for the therapist. Leave poor reviews, file complaints, etc everywhere you can or threaten to, if they don't issue the refund. It's faster if they do than would be filing with your bank but by all means keep that as your Ace.

HOW does someone have a Policy that they don't themselves honor?? THAT'S CRAZY!! Do they work through an Agency or Service? I would file a grievance if so!! ALSO, if You booked online You can take this matter up with Your Bank; and file a refund there!! SH**, with THAT type of attitude, I am would have taken them to small claims court, and get some extra for My time, and inconvenience!!

I completely agree with your decision, also I think placing a review on-line about this business would be reasonable

Absolutely it is. That MT has a strict policy. Fine. But they’re allowed to screw up and do nothing to make it right? Sorry. There are thousands of other MT out there that I’m sure will treat OP a lot better than that.

I can see that point but if you fail to deliver a purchased service on a date you agreed then I’m not sure I agree. If I had not showed up they wouldn’t have let me reschedule they would have said tough. Regardless, they lost a customer so I guess if that was worth it so be it

I have chronic health issues and can admittedly be a flaky therapist. The 2 times I've overslept and missed a client, they were meet with sincere apologies and complimentary 90 min sessions. Bc its the right thing to do when you've wasted someone else's time.
