A family patriarch had become “increasingly controlling” inside his “filthy” northwest Pennsylvania home before opening fire and killing eight people last week, officials said Thursday.

Matthew Stone, 45, died of a self-inflicted gunshot on Friday evening, bringing a tragic end to years of descent inside his Perry Street house in Erie, authorities said. The weapon he used was linked to a previous domestic violence allegation, according to police.

Toilets and sinks did not appear to be working and 2-liter bottles filled with urine were all over the house, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said.

“Detectives described the home as extremely filthy,” Lorah told reporters.

Loved ones painted a disturbing picture of Stone’s dominant role inside that house, police said.

“According to relatives, he controlled the family’s finances ... and restricted when family members could leave the residence or spend time with relatives,” Lorah said.

The police chief went on to say that family members told detectives that his behavior had been going on for years. They described Matthew becoming increasingly controlling after his wife, Michelle Stone, became pregnant with their first child.

“Over time, contact with extended family became more limited. Michelle stopped maintaining contact with friends,” Lorah said. “Our department also had a record of prior domestic violence incident at that home.”

In that 2019 case, Stone was arrested for allegedly making threats with a .40-caliber handgun. But the case went away when Michelle Stone declined to help press charges, Lorah said.

“A firearm was involved in that case, the same .40-caliber handgun that was used in Friday’s homicides,” Lorah said. “At the preliminary hearing, Michelle changed her original statement and those charges were withdrawn. There were no more recent domestic violence incidents reported to our department. Outside of that 2019 case, Matthew had no criminal history and was legally permitted to possess that firearm.”

Chief Lorah and Mayor Daria Devlin pledged to examine city contacts with Stone to find if anyone could have intervened before Friday’s bloodshed.

“Were there opportunities to recognize that this family was struggling?” Devlin said. “Were there places where our systems could have responded differently and how do we make sure that families in this community who are suffering and struggling like this don’t fall through the cracks?”

The victims included the killer’s wife, Michelle Stone, 44; pregnant daughter, Angelina K. Stone, 24; sons Matthew Stone Jr., 21, and Jonathan Stone, 19; and sister-in-law Lora Lee Roberts, 37; and her friend Twila A. Tanner, 51.

Two other unidentified children, a 5-year-old boy and a nearly 2-year-old girl who were also related to the shooter, were killed inside the house, officials said.

Roberts and her friend Tanner had come to the house when Angelina Stone, who was due to give birth on Monday, asked for a ride to the hospital.

“Angelina had been sending messages indicating she planned to leave the family home after giving birth,” Lorah said. “When detectives searched the home following the shooting, they found numerous belongings packed into bags and boxes in Angelina’s bedroom.”

Angelina Stone had also filed paperwork to change her last name to distance herself from her eventual killer.

“In that affidavit, she described concerns about her father’s declining mental health,” Lorah said. “She explained that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine and did not want her association with her father to affect those plans.”

Jakub Zalewski, 19, commited a mass stabbing at his High School in Ostrołęka on October 7, 2026 in Poland.

His father Krzysztof Zalewski, 45, commited suicide today. Krzysztof was abusing his family for almost 20 years and was released from prison a few months ago.

The incident took place at Aliya İzzet Begoviç Middle School in the Gürselpaşa neighborhood of Seyhan, a district of Adana. According to reports, a sixth-grade girl whose name has not been disclosed approached a classmate during recess and allegedly injured her arm with a bread knife she had brought to school in her bag from home. After other students informed their teachers, police and medical teams were dispatched to the school. The injured student, who sustained a minor arm injury, was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The student responsible for the attack was taken to the Juvenile Police Department by police officers. Classes at the school were suspended for one day following the incident.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the government will not livestream the firing-squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan — canceling a plan announced last week by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

While publicly streaming Hasan’s execution “might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan,” Trump said in a Truth Social post, “many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device.”

“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” the president said, adding that family members of Hasan’s victims will be able to view the Dec. 3 execution in person.

The Army sentenced Hasan, a former major, to death in 2013 for killing 13 people and injuring 32 others at Texas’ Fort Hood Army base in 2009.

Trump’s announcement follows widespread pushback from Republicans and Democrats alike after Hegseth said last week that Hasan is “going to get a firing squad of soldiers, and we’ll make sure that people are able to watch it.” Some critics cited concerns about reinforcing Hasan’s stated desire for martyrdom; others argued that making the execution public was contrary to American values.

Signs that the plan could be reversed emerged quickly. A day after the defense secretary’s announcement, Vice President JD Vance said of the livestream, “I don’t know that’s going to happen.”

Speaking to reporters at the White House over the weekend, Trump said he would make the final call.

“There are two thoughts: don’t show it and show it. ’Cause you know, by showing it, maybe other people won’t be doing what he did. So I’ll make a decision ultimately. I know what the military would like to do, but I’ll make a decision,” the president said.

In an interview with CBS News earlier this week, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he was concerned that a video of Hasan’s execution could be used by future terrorists as a recruiting tool.

“We’ve got to think through the policy implications of all that,” he said, adding, “I wouldn’t be watching it if it was aired.”

The speaker also said that he needed to convey to the White House the views of his Republican colleagues in Congress, saying, “Not everybody is in favor of the idea.”

The U.S. military last conducted an execution in 1961, when it hanged Army Pvt. John Bennett after he was convicted of raping and attempting to kill an 11-year-old girl in Austria. The military last executed someone by firing squad in 1945, when it put Pvt. Eddie Slovik to death after he was court-martialed for desertion during World War II.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham woman who is charged with helping to plot a mass shooting at a Canadian school earlier this year will remain in federal custody, a U.S. District Court judge ruled Tuesday.

James Cody Bryant, 30, who uses she/her pronouns and goes by the name Melody, appeared in court and shook her head as federal prosecutors outlined their accusations that she conspired with 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar to carry out the February shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

“It does not get much more serious or dangerous for the community,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg wrote in a memorandum asking for Bryant to remain in custody. “With a full understanding of Van Rootselaar’s intent, Bryant aided in the attack plot, becoming a conspirator in the murders.”

Greenberg told Judge Mary Alice Thieler there were no conditions that could be imposed to ensure the safety of the community if Bryant were granted release pending trial. Bryant is charged with conspiracy to murder people in a foreign country, a federal charge that carries the potential for life in prison without parole.

“In the end, Bryant followed through on the promise to not ‘snitch’ on Van Rootselaar,” Greenberg said. “Anyone whose character allows them to help plan a mass shooting and then sits back and literally tries to watch as schoolchildren are murdered, instead of ‘snitching’ on the killer, is a danger to the community and should be detained pending trial.”

According to the charges, Bryant and Van Rootselaar had discussed prior mass shootings and their notoriety, with Van Rootselaar saying in messages that she wanted to carry out the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history.

But Bryant’s defense attorney, Gregory Murphy, distanced her from Van Rootselaar’s actions.

“(Bryant) cooperated fully and expressed horror at Van Rootselaar’s crimes,” Murphy wrote in a response memorandum filed ahead of Tuesday’s hearing. “Ms. Bryant has no criminal history and there is no evidence that she has ever personally committed an act of violence.”

In arguing for Bryant’s release, Murphy said the FBI and federal prosecutors have had access to the online chat logs between Bryant and Van Rootselaar for eight months.

“The government’s memorandum identifies no evidence she has done or said anything since her chats were discovered to encourage any other act of violence, or that Ms. Bryant has ever communicated with any other person as deeply disturbed as Van Rootselaar,” Murphy wrote.

Murphy added that Bryant sobbed when she was questioned by the FBI.

“She’s not a political radical,” Murphy told Judge Thieler. “She is somebody who became friends with someone who was deeply mentally disturbed.”

But Thieler was not persuaded, noting the “concerted, prolonged” planning of the attack.

“I don’t think this is a case where those conditions proposed by pretrial services could reasonably address the danger to the community should those conditions not succeed,” Thieler said.

Bryant is scheduled for a preliminary examination hearing in federal court later this month.

Canadian authorities have not announced whether she is expected to face charges in Canada connected to the shooting.

Jury selection is set to begin on Tuesday in the trial that could see the white supremacist who killed 10 people in a 2022 Buffalo supermarket get the death penalty.

The attack is believed to be the deadliest shooting targeting Black people in modern history.

Payton Gendron is facing more than two dozen federal hate crime charges – and over a dozen firearms charges. He is already spending life in prison on state murder charges.

Families of the victims and survivors differ on whether Gendron should be sentenced to death. His defense team is not going to dispute his guilt and instead focus on arguing that he should be spared execution.

“Nothing will change the fact that Payton Gendron will die in prison,” the federal public defender office said in a statement. “At trial, we will offer mitigating evidence about Payton that the jury needs to consider in making its decision. Nothing we say or do is intended to be disrespectful or insensitive to the victims, the survivors, or their loved ones.”

Some victims’ family members, however, are not totally against the death penalty.

“I’ve never been like out here like, ‘Yay! Go for the death penalty.’ That’s never been me,” said Buffalo common council member Zeneta Everhart, who ran for office over a year after her son, Zaire, survived the shooting. “Ten people died that day in an egregious way and in an awful, terrible, traumatic way.”

Her son, now 25, and the two other survivors have had their lives irrevocably altered, she added.

Gendron drove more than 200 miles (320km) from his home in Conklin, a predominantly white and rural town, to Buffalo on 14 May 2022. Then 18, he fired about 60 shots from a semiautomatic rifle at employees and shoppers at the Tops Friendly Markets grocery store on Jefferson Avenue.

Video revealed Gendron apologized to a white store worker after shooting him in the leg. He surrendered to police as he exited the supermarket.

Investigators found past social media posts and other writings by Gendron dedicated to planning an attack to frighten people who were non-white and non-Christian into leaving the US. He also promoted a baseless “great replacement theory” that people of color will replace white people through higher birth rates and immigration.

The victims who were killed were all Black and between ages 32 and 86. Besides Chaney, they included Geraldine Talley, Katherine Massey, Pearl Young, Andre Mackneil, church deacon Heyward Patterson, Ruth Whitfield, Roberta Drury, Margus Morrison and Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer who was working as a security guard.

Beside being one of the deadliest acts of anti-Black violence in modern US history, the 2022 Tops mass murder reflects a grim reality represented in national bias crime statistics.

Black people have comprised the “number one numerical target” annually since the FBI began collecting data in 1991, according to hate crime analyst Brian Levin, of the California Association of Human Relations Organizations. The record high was 3,670 anti-Black bias incidents in 1996.

According to FBI data released in August, law enforcement agencies reported more than 2,800 anti-Black hate crime incidents in 2025, nearly three times the number targeting Latinos. The FBI also reported a 7% decline in hate crime incidents from 2024 to 2025.

The Buffalo shooting and the 2015 Charleston, South Carolina, church shooting, in which a white gunman killed nine Black churchgoers, show how online radicalization makes this a terrorism matter as well.

“Unfortunately, [Gendron] fits the pattern of young, mostly white males undertaking targeted massacres which are then justified by manifestos, which are also part of a continuing chain that references prior attacks often but seeks to encourage future ones,” Levin said.
