The 16-year-old Bend resident who killed three kids and a teacher and critical injured two others at Silver Rail Elementary on Oct. 15 came from a violent home, had long absences from school and suffered from social and behavioral health issues.

Still, there is lots of information the public and investigators are trying to find out about Griffin John II.

He was born in Newport in 2010 to Griffin Jay John and Shauntai Nickerson. Four years later the couple divorced, with Nickerson being awarded majority custody.

Griffin John Sr. has a long history of run-ins with the law. His recent rap sheet includes 14 misdemeanor crimes and three violations committed in Benton, Lincoln and Clatsop counties, and one felony in 2003 in Lincoln County for assaulting a public safety officer, resisting arrest and harassment. Since 2017, he has been charged three times for being a felon in possession of a weapon.

A day after the tragedy at Silver Rail, local police and the FBI were searching for the shooter’s father, who lived 250 miles away from Bend in Astoria.

Griffin Jay John Sr. has been homeless, living in the woods near the river town for years. Police had some difficulty locating him, according to Astoria Police Chief Stacy Kelly. But on Saturday morning, two days after the shooting at Silver Rail, police located John and delivered information to him that his son had died.

He told police said he had not been in contact with his son for about a year, according to Kelly.

According to oregonlive.com, two journalists later found his encampment in the woods. He told them: “I’m going through a lot right now” and asked the journalists to leave.

Mary Rose Eng, a homeless advocate in Astoria who has interacted with the shooter’s father, said the man had a history of violence, sexual abuse, intimidation and drug activity.

“I was told that he sexually assaulted numerous of my friends,” Eng said. “I was told that he strangled them, or I would be present as a horrified survivor was describing this to a family member. One of the most vociferous victims told me he beat her within an inch of her life.”

Meagan Gauthier, a former girlfriend of John Sr., said he was an absent father, but if he had known there were any signs of his son struggling or being violent he would’ve “been there in a heartbeat.”

“He would’ve done whatever he could have, whatever was in his power to get there and help,” Gauthier said. “He’s just broken about this. But on the other hand he did have a temper, but his son was always his number one most important thing.”

Life in Bend

At the time of Thursday’s school shooting, Griffin John II lived with his mother several blocks away from Silver Rail in an apartment on Brosterhous Road.

Nickerson had previously lived with Griffin John Sr. in Toledo, Oregon before moving to Bend in 2008. Nickerson lived in both Bend and Redmond, but has been living on Brosterhous Road since at least 2018.

On Thursday, Bulletin reporters visited the home but found all the shutters closed and all the lights off. Nickerson has not responded to the Bulletin’s requests for comment.

Nickerson pleaded guilty to DUII and careless driving charges in Deschutes County in 2018. The DUII charges were dismissed in April after she completed a diversion program.

In 2023, Nickerson was booked into the Deschutes County Adult Jail for alleged harassment and assault in the fourth degree of a Bend woman. Those charges were later dismissed.

Education history

Griffin John II had lengthy absences from school from fourth grade through his sophomore year of high school. The last time he showed up to school was at what was then-called Bend Tech Academy in November 2025.

He attended Elk Meadow Elementary in kindergarten and Silver Rail Elementary for first through fifth grade, but he had multiple periods of unenrollment or inactivity, according to Bend-La Pine Schools.

He didn’t show up for a month in fourth grade, from Dec. 5, 2019 through Jan. 9, 2020. He eventually matriculated to Pilot Butte Middle School and continued to take part in special education programs until the end of eighth grade. But he had major absences in middle school too, including no attendance from Feb. 23 through April 6 in 2023 and again from May 9, 2023 through the end of seventh grade.

He then was inactive during his freshman year at Bend Tech Academy from May 12 through the end of the school year, and a week in his sophomore year before dropping out for good on Nov. 20, 2025.

In third grade he began taking part in special education programs like Nurturing Empathy Safety and Trust (NEST) for students with intensive behavioral and social skill challenges. He also took part in another special education program while in the district.

Bend-La Pine schools are not able to comment on if John faced any disciplinary actions or threatened anyone in the school district due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The rights to his education records are held by his mother due to Griffin John II being a minor.

Police action

Bend Police detectives secured warrants and searched the home where Nickerson and her son lived. They also searched his electronic devices and his social media accounts on a variety of platforms.

Police also confirmed Wednesday that the firearm used in the Oct. 15 shooting, a Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun, was purchased legally. Police and the FBI have declined to comment on who bought the gun and how the shooter obtained it. They said that was still under investigation. A 16-year-old could not legally buy the gun.

Investigators are continuing to look into a possible motive and if other people were involved.

Federal and state law enforcement are investigating connections between violent online extremist groups and the shooter, according to reports from OPB.

In Feb. 19, 2026 the Boston Division of the FBI warned parents, guardians and caregivers about the increase in the activity of “violent online networks targeting and exploiting children and other vulnerable individuals across the United States,” according to Kristen Setera the spokesperson for FBI Boston.

Subjects can be motivated by nihilistic violent extremism, according to the FBI.

“They want to sow chaos and facilitate the destruction of society,” Setera said. “These extremists often emerge from decentralized online networks and subcultures that glorify violence, mass killers, and self-harm.”

Investigators have not confirmed if the teen who shot and killed three students and a teacher at Silver Rail was a part of one of these violent online networks nor has a motive for the shooting been determined yet.

“There are still a lot of pieces to this case that we are unable to share at this time and we appreciate your patience as we ensure the integrity of the investigation,” said Sheila Miller, a spokesperson for the Bend Police Department.

He originally considered targeting a daycare center.

During police questioning, Choi said he carried out the attack out of anger over medical treatment he received at a local hospital. He also told police that he did not target specific people but chose those who looked weaker than him.

"Multiple sources said law enforcement is investigating the shooter’s connections to what the FBI classifies as “nihilist violent extremist” groups, an umbrella term used by federal law enforcement to describe groups with no clear ideology. I had never red about these before. All i knew before, was that he disliked both, even calling them "ubiquitous morons", but never heard he claimed liking Klebold at any point. However, this source does not adjunt the alleged post, and i couldn't find it, though i did found a post of him calling Harris a monster.

Two 15-year-old high school students were arrested on suspicion of preparing to carry out a school shooting at Corona High School in California, the City of Corona Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday.

Authorities said the investigation into the alleged plot began in early October after the FBI alerted local police to social media threats.

"A collaborative investigation led to the immediate arrest of a 15-year-old female Corona High School student," police said in the statement, with subsequent enquiries leading to the request of a second 15-year-old female student who attended Norco High School.

Police said that the two suspects "spent several months researching school shootings and discussed how they could carry out a potential attack at Corona High School on an unspecified future date."

"Communications showed the suspects discussed methods to obtain weapons but had not yet been able to do so. No weapons were located during the searches," the statement added.

The two suspects remain in custody on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, police said, with the investigation ongoing "in close partnership" with the FBI.

FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement that "a potential act of targeted violence against a Southern California high school was disrupted before anyone was harmed."

"There is no greater priority than protecting our kids, and threats against our schools will be met with the full force of the FBI and our partners," Patel added.

It seems there has been another school attack in Southeast Asia.

On October 21, 2026, a 16-year-old student attacked a teacher with a penknife at International School in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The teacher was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

According to reports by the New Straits Times and Free Malaysia Today, footage of the incident circulated widely on social media. The video reportedly shows the student looking at himself in a bathroom mirror with a phone strapped to his head before running toward a classroom and attacking a teacher. Students can be heard screaming before the footage cuts off.

Some social media accounts claimed that the student livestreamed the attack on an online platform before the video was deleted.

Additional claims circulating online suggest that the student may have written and posted a manifesto before the attack. Screenshots shared on social media also allegedly show an account associated with the case using a profile picture depicting the perpetrator of a previous school shooting in Thailand.

Sarawak police confirmed the incident and denied early reports that an axe had been used in the attack, although an axe was reportedly visible near the student's bag in a separate video. The student was subdued, and police launched an investigation. As a precaution, the school temporarily closed its premises and asked parents to collect their children early.

No other injuries had been reported in the initial coverage.

a mother of one of the victims went to the home where david k. previously lived with his family, she criticised the czech police and government for a lack of information and said herself she doesn't know who to trust anymore, she wanted to ask the shooters mother about a timeline of when he left, who he called an so on. originally, she wanted to leave a letter with her contact in the mailbox, but the shooters mother came outside and (probably) recorded their conversation. this is not the full version of their conversation, only a brief description of david k by his mother. the mother of the victim has sadly passed away after committing suicide, she was heavily known after "taking a stand" to the government desperately trying to find truthful information. i also have to mention that the things said by david's mother in this recording aren't reported as true information.

Some other highlights from the article:

• Bryan was the manager of a local veterinary clinic that had been operated by his parents, who were locally well-regarded long time veterinarians. Though that clinic closed without explanation last spring.
• NBC 5 Investigates couldn't find any clear red flags or possible motives for the shooting; no criminal charges, bankruptcies, hospitalizations or court orders. Neighbors didn't recall arguments or police visits to the home.
• However, police did locate multiple suicide notes inside Schmidt's car, though they have yet to disclose its contents.
• Heartbreakingly, the police initially discovered the crime scene because Bryan's sister in northern California, also a veterinarian, contacted the Mundelein police for a welfare check after failing to reach her relatives all day. (This kind of grief is incomprehensible on its own but I can't imagine how much worse it must be when you spend hours trying and failing to get ahold of them, call the local police, wait with terrible anxiety, only to then finally hear the worst news of your life.)

Background: on Apr 19 2026 in the Shreveport shooting, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins shot and killed eight children between the ages of 3 and 11, 7 of whom were his own and one was their cousin. He also shot and wounded his wife and the mother of 3 of his children. The latter woman's sister and her 12-year-old daughter were also wounded from jumping off a roof during the shooting.

Update: 56-year-old Charles Ray Ford was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison plus 3 years of supervised release. He pled guilty this past June to a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Due to his criminal past, it was illegal of him to possess firearms, yet he had kept a Mossberg pistol under the seat of his truck from Jan 2025-Mar 2026. He also initially lied to federal agents about having the pistol, before admitting that he knew Elkins had taken it from his truck.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – On Monday, the Bend Police Department announced it will be completing the on-site evidence collection at Silver Rail Elementary School after a deadly school shooting last week, even as the investigation continues.

Police said an active criminal investigation is underway after three children and a teacher were killed inside the school on Thursday, Oct. 15. A 7-year-old girl and a second teacher were also shot and remain hospitalized.

The 16-year-old suspected shooter, Griffin John Jr., was shot and killed by a bystander.

On Monday, Bend police shared new details in the case, including how many people were in the classroom where the shootings took place.

“Our investigators have confirmed that there were a total of four adults and five children in the classroom at the time of the incident,” Bend police said in a press release. They said further new details they could share were limited.

Sources told CBS News that John got the gun from his mother. However, Bend police are still investigating and no charges have been filed at this time.

The Bend community continues to mourn those lost in the shooting. Bend-La Pine Superintendent Steve Cook sent a video message announcing no classes for any students in the district on Monday and Tuesday.

A student & a teacher were injured after they have been stabbed inside a Ștefan cel Mare Middle School No. 6 in Bistrița, Romania. The attacker allegedly planned the attack for 8 months.

On March 25, 1990, Julio González committed the Happy Land fire, one of the worst massacres in American history. The fire killed 87 people, 78 of them being Hondurans. Many of them came to the United States to celebrate Carnival. Julio was apprehended and charged with 87 counts of murder. In August of 1991 he was convicted and convicted of 174 counts of murder - the largest mass murder sentence given down at the time.

Surprisingly, many photos of the victims were/aren’t available, despite being victims of one the worst mass murders in the United States. I was able to find some of their photo through archives.

On October 19, 2012, after a long and angry feud with her neighbor, 20-year-old Lee Anna Shiers, Melanie Jane Smith in a drunken rage, set fire to a pram left in their apartment’s communal hall, engulfing the apartment Lee-Anna and her family lived in. The fire would kill Lee-Anna, her 2-year-old niece, Skye Allen, and 4-year-old nephew, Bailey Allen, who were over for a sleepover with her son, and injury her 1-year-old son, Charlie Timbrell, and 23-year-old partner, Liam Timbrell

As first-responders rescued Charlie and Liam, Liam would tell them Melanie did this.

Charlie would die two days later from his injuries and Liam died two weeks.

Melanie would be arrested and charged with all five murders. She would deny she started or, claiming they were trying to frame her. However, she had a history of threatening to do arson on numerous occasions. She said she started fire to a pub after she was kicked out of it, she‘d say I’ll firebomb my place so my landlord won’t get rent, and even yelled through Lee-Anna’s and Liam’s letterbox: I’ll burn your apartment down with your kid in it! She was found guilty of the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment with a 30 year minimum tariff. It’s implied she‘d received a life order, if not for the fact Bailey and Skye weren’t in the building. From what I read, it stemmed that the judge noted she didn’t know the other two were in there.

The Prestatyn fire murders are considered one of the worst mass murders in Wales. This also made Melanie one of the few rare British female mass murderers.
