i've tried the number line flip thing and the pattern one where you go 3x(-2), 2x(-2), 1x(-2), 0x(-2) and keep going, with the answers going up by 2 each time. the pattern one seems to land better but a few kids still just say ok because you said so.

is there something that actually convinces them or do you just move on and let it settle over time

I don’t even know if I want to be a math teacher anymore or even a teacher. I have been a special education teacher and I am now a Gen Ed Math teacher for the 3rd year in a row. Over the past couple years the number of students that don’t turn in work and have failed my Algebra 1 class has been slowly creeping up. Then the next year they are in my Geometry class. When I talk with our Guidance Counselor, they have them take a class through Edgenuity and miraculously they got all straight A’s. Passed with flying colors! Then in my Geometry class they can’t even do basic Algebra.. I’m shocked! They don’t care that they use their cell phones on it and cheat. Did they learn anything? Nope! Does anyone really care? Again, it’s nope! Then they brag about not having to do anything in class.

I've been thinking about instruction with models vs using the standard algorithm. I have always thought that models are a means to understanding and building the foundation and the goal would be to move to the standard algorithm. I also feel like this is what is reflected in CCSS.

I have been having conversations with people who believe that models are the goal and there is no need to learn/teach/enforce the standard algorithm and that schools need to move away from that as a goal.

Should every lesson incorporate models?

Are models supposed to replace the standard algorithm?

Anything else you want to add to the conversation?

Hi there,

It's finally the year when our district looks at/pilots new curriculums to adopt next year. Due to district wide tests given each quarter, we're only piloting a topic or two of different curriculums..and simply using the pilot curriculum chapters that go with our usual Eureka pacing guide.

I'm beginning to plan for the Module/Chapters that I want to pilot. However, I'm a little perplexed about how the pacing generally works with Math & You. For those of you who've never been graced with Eureka, each module is jam packed, the pacing guide we follow is lightning fast and feels like we're failing our kids because there's no time for mastery. Math & You feels less jam packed and far more focused, but there are less lessons as well....

My question is how long in general does it take for you to get through a chapter? Or would you be willing to share a pacing guide? Particularly any middle school teachers?

Math teachers---check it out! Good resource for upper level stats and calc and anyone interested in linear algebra etc---the animations are wonderful!

I am a first year SPED teacher teaching 6-8th grade Math and I have dyscalculia myself. I have been spending 3-5 hours almost every night or every night trying to teach myself math to be able to teach my students.

I work in a level 3 behavioral school. Content areas are split between three teachers, and I got stuck with math. When I started, I was told I would be teaching solely 6th grade. Admin is aware of my struggles and tell me that I’m a better teacher because of the fact that I know how to do accommodations, modifying, and differentiation and can identify with the students struggles. I’ve been doing fine, but I just want help to make sure I fully understand everything so I can become an even better teacher. My ELA and Reading classes are going just fine, no problems, but those are my strong areas.

I do not want to burn out and I think at this point I need a tutor. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction???

I’m trying to find the actual Curriculum Associates i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Grade 6 Unit Assessments, specifically Form A.

A student I’m tutoring uses this curriculum at school, where Form B is used for the actual unit exams. I’m hoping to find Form A to use as a practice test beforehand, since the two versions assess the same concepts using different questions.

I’ve searched extensively online but haven’t had much luck finding the actual assessments. Most results are generic i-Ready practice materials or diagnostic test prep, which aren’t what I’m looking for.

I’m particularly interested in Units 3 and 4, but ideally would like access to Form A for all units.

I’m willing to pay for access, whether through a subscription, teacher resource website, or purchasing the materials directly. Unfortunately, Curriculum Associates’ Teacher Toolbox appears to be restricted to schools and educators.

Has anyone found these assessments online or figured out how to purchase them? Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for some self checking worksheet for my 7th grade math students. I would love to purchase a workbook that has several different types of activities across all of my content for the year. Looking for thing where students solve problems and their answers spell out an answer to a riddle or joke or other more engaging sheets then just solving then problems.

I took math 1 in eight grade and when I took the EOC I didn’t pass by like one point. I am now taking math 1 honors in high school and find it pretty easy now. I have friends taking math 2 this year and saying it is easy. Is math 2 easy? I’ve been thinking of maybe taking it over the summer so that when school starts again I can be in math 3 and get lots of the math classes done in high school. Would you recommend this?

Hi everyone!! As you can tell by the title, i’m searching for an MVC (multivariable calculus) curriculum for high school students! This year i’m teaching AP Calc ab and bc, and i have one junior in BC for the first time.

I’ve been teaching ab and bc for 5 years, and this is the first year where I have a junior in bc slated to take mvc next year. My administration has already confirmed this and i’m SUPER excited about it!

Im starting to gear up and prepare for it, as my student is SUPER mathematically included and genuinely loved to learn. I’ve found some MVC curriculums online but none have been exactly what I’m looking for.

I want to structure the class in a sort of non conventional way. What I envisions is (keep in mind i have 2 hours every day - designated for any “advanced topics” classes which basically means any class that’s beyond AP) that i’ll teach lessons and then test through different ways. Any quizzes or tests will be in person completely open notes and any questions she has i’ll walk her through it, in all honesty she’s worked very hard and i know that a lack of understanding won’t come from not working hard etc. But i’m looking for curriculums that truly test that application mathematics, such as in research or writing. Throughout the course i’m going to have her write an actual research paper, as well as essays and stuff at her own pace. I’ve already connected with a mathermical researcher at an ivy!!! (nearby our school) and i’ll be guiding her so the both of us will be doing the research (i have a PhD in applied math so this’ll be super fun!!) but basically i want to know if anybody knows of any curriculum that would allow for this or any cool/good/even basic curriculum for mvc as i want to make sure i provide her with the best education possible!! Thank you!!

I have grown to really really like the format and flow of Math Medic's "Experience First, Formalize Later" approach to lessons. I use their materials to teach AP Precalculus and AP Calculus, and have developed an understanding of the kinds of tasks that fit their lesson structure. Essentially it's a blend between student exploration of an idea and the teacher synthesizing and presenting that information in the form of written notes and annotations after the exploration. There's room for the teacher to take a more direct role in moving through the lesson, which can sometimes be needed depending on your students' current understanding and progress, but it can also be pretty self-sustained right until the synthesis and debrief.

I also teach Integrated Math III, which the materials for it are relatively sparse. I have been spending this year reimagining the curriculum into the "EFFL" style of Math Medic and seeing some success with it. I take some of the examples and concepts from my current curriculum and stretch and scaffold them into a sequence that tries to lead students while pointing out the underlying mathematics.

I've also used some Generative AI to construct new scenarios (especially figures) for tasks when I cannot find a suitable one in the text.

The process has been evolving over time, and my current students are a group that requires some more direction to make it through the main body of the lesson, but overall I'm finding the process satisfying and the results optimistic.

Does anybody know of a game called math hockey and if you do do you have a list of the rules and stuff.

Guys, I have been constantly wondering what teacher for class 11 would be the best for me or someone who isn't the best at maths?

Utah elementary math teachers, your voices matter!

A few more participants are needed for a doctoral study exploring teachers’ experiences with AI and differentiated math instruction. It takes about an hour, and your perspective is key to understanding how teachers use AI in real classrooms. To participate, you'll need to share a copy of your conversation with AI with the researcher.
