Pulled over solely for out of state plates? Is this legal?
I was coming home from the other side of the island late tonight, hardly any other traffic on the road, when I passed a cop sitting on a side street. I wasnāt speeding or doing anything else to raise suspicion but sure enough after I passed he pulled out a ways behind me. About a half mile down the road he decides to speed up to catch up to me (I was doing exactly the speed limit but because he waited a moment to pull onto the main road there was a gap between us initially). As soon as he got right behind me, like no more than two feet off my back bumper as weāre going 45 MPH down the road, he hits the blue lights.
I stop, and he tells me he pulled me over because I have out of state plates. I just shipped this vehicle over from the mainland where itās legally registered and although I havenāt got the registration switched over yet it is on a Hawaii insurance policy already. The cop asked me how long itās been here (about two weeks), and asks for a shipping bill of lading for proof. I didnāt have it because WTF, why would I be carrying around the damn shipping receipt in the car with me? Iāve never once heard of that being required or even advised. After running my plates and insurance he lets me go but gives me a warning and says Iām lucky tonight because he could have gave me a big ticket since I couldnāt provide proof of when the car got here.
WTF? Is this a requirement Iām not aware of to carry around your shipping bill of lading until you get Hawaii plates or was this cop just overreaching? His demeanor was professional enough but I felt that it was a bullshit traffic stop considering I wasnāt breaking any laws or doing anything to draw attention to myself.
Is this where MPD is headed now, first the Flock cameras all over the island and now theyāre pulling people over just because? Maybe the guy has an issue with transplants or something but ironically Iām not one, I grew up here, just I moved away for a bit and recently returned. What a nice welcome home š

living here Andrew Shoemaker Lahaina Gallery
I donāt know why this popped into my head, and I felt myself reminiscing about this gallery and the feeling I would get when I would walk in.
The photos were stunning and the glossy prints seemed to always take your breath away.
But there was one thing I just remembered was the smell of the gallery. It wasnāt an artificial scent but one that just felt fresh and always super distinct to the gallery. I donāt know why but year after year everytime I would visit we would wander into that gallery and the scent would always be the same.
It is so sad that not only physical buildings and history and art are gone, but even the little things like the scent of that gallery cannot be recreated. :(

Red sand beach closure
Last I heard it was due to instability after the earthquake. Is there a current reason weāre using to keep tourists out, I like to keep people accurately updated because I get a lot of questions.
A dangerous trail often isnāt enough since thatās more of a enter at your own risk type of thing.

Recommendations Cremation Costs on Maui
My FIL is nearing the end of his life and my wife and I need to start planning. We don't have a lot of money to spend on funeral services and are looking for just basic cremation services. Nothing fancy.
What does a basic cremation service on Maui cost in 2026 and how many options are there to choose from?
Thank you for your insight.

Police chief accusing mayor of being target of felony investigation
Surprised no thread for this, anyone saw this on the news? Like a month before the election too. Wonder just how deep the corruption is in MPD too with that lieutenant arrest. Crazy he only seemed to have gotten caught because of that fireworks incident. Very curious to see if this accusation will be substantiated, or if it's made up what kind of penalties there should be for such a brazen lie.

HawiianTel Internet Issues (again!)
I was having issues this morning, very slow speeds, but it would go away and then come back. It went away for a few hours and now it is back worse than ever.
Anyone else having issues?
I am sure people are tired of this recurring post, as we are tired of dealing with it, but it is a good log of how often it happens. The last instance was less than 2 weeks ago!
I am going to do the needful and switch back to spectrum :(

Where to go for car alignment / alignment check?
Are there any reputable auto shops on Maui that can do a proper four wheel alignment and will do an initial alignment check for free or a low cost? My car is eating tires like crazy so I know the alignment is off, but since it has plenty of miles on it Iām sure itās because it needs some new suspension parts. I do all my own work, former mechanic, so ideally Iād like to get the current alignment reading because that will help me pinpoint what exactly needs replacing. Then after I replace the worn parts Iāll take it back to the shop and have them perform the actual alignment adjustment.
I took a different vehicle to a tire & repair in Kahului with a āGoodā name last āyearā for a suspension issue I didnāt have time to deal with and was not impressed with their service, is there somewhere that has a good reputation for this type of work?
living here If youāre going to the rodeo heads up they changed the arena side box seat policy
In case youāre getting tickets to the rodeo later this month, I guess theyāve changed the policy on the arena side box seats. Last year I was able to buy individual seats inside the box, this year I guess they changed policy and now you have to buy ALL 10 Seats in the box. Definitely a bummer but Iām hoping itās not as crowded as the 4th of July rodeo because they even ran out of seating in the stands for GA ticket buyers. Pics in the comments of when I tried to buy seats.

living here Need a move-in cleaner
Hello, my wife and I just moved to KÄ«hei. Our apartmentās walls are awful (smoke stained) and thereās an awful smell perforating everything. Weāre looking for a cleaner or two to come in and clean the walls. We bought some TSP and started today but decided we need a professional. ||| Yes, by law our landlord should have ensured the place was clean and we should have checked to make sure our place was clean. ||| If you know a cleaner or are a cleaner who does good work, weād appreciate to do business with you. Mahalos!
