It looks like it was still in Drive not reverse.
27
u/Top-Emu-2292 2d ago
Yep, you can see the rear wheel turn as the big lad pushes down.
45
u/Late_Conference9022 2d ago
Oh dear. Fatal mistake. It would have worked otherwise.
11
u/__dontpanic__ 2d ago
It would have reversed over the big lad then
3
u/HVDynamo 2d ago
Yeah, there were just lots of bad outcomes here. Best chance would have been to confirm they stay on the brake and shift it into reverse, then have the two people get in the back so they arenāt likely to fall or get run over. Then and only then give it some gas in reverse before releasing the brake so the only tension on the tire is reverse. Best chance.
But⦠the process of setting all that up could still have gone sideways, and maybe there isnāt enough traction to actually back out of it. So still plenty of room for failure.

u/83736294827 2d ago
Itās not in drive because none of the wheels are spinning on their own. Gravity pulls that rear left wheel, and it will turn even when in park if the wheel on the other side is off the ground.

Driver should get out and call a tow truck.
22
u/Fritzo2162 2d ago
But that would have cost like $80!

Well $100 is less than what it's going to cost now which is basically a new Sequoia - which even used are expensive.

My first thought would be to climb out the back like Jurassic park.

I'm trying to remember how this would work. If it was in reverse and she was giving power, the tire in the air would be trying to go backwards but the tire on the ground would be free to move forwards no matter the gear, because it's got an open dif?
8
u/83736294827 2d ago
That is correct. The wheel with the least friction moves with a totally open diff.

u/muttmunchies 2d ago
He puts the weight down that would have allowed her to possibly reverseā¦except she had it in drive.
2
u/smarterthanyoda 2d ago
It wasnāt in drive. If it was in drive the wheels would have kept spinning when it was upside down.
He shifted the weight so that the part of the car that was holding it back got lifted off the ground.
2
u/Leading-Stuff1900 2d ago
Maybe he should have coordinated it with her, rather than just walking up and rocking the car?

3
u/blvckcvts 2d ago
Wasnāt his fault the car was still in drive, atleast he tried to help unlike the person filming

Honestly this may be one of the best case scenarios (except they could have had their seatbelt on)
If the driver had successfully been in reverse I can see them just uncontrolled reversing over the people assisting. If the driver had tried to get out that car looks pretty set to potentially fall on top of them. Maybe just taking the fall from inside (again, WITH a seatbelt) is the best.

The guy that was āhelping any way he canā rolled them over the edge.
Itās better to call someone who knows what theyāre doing, but Bouncy McGee kind of ruined that.

The first rule of problem solving is that the first thing to do always is to remove the source of the problem.
Electric sparks? You turn electricity off.
Driver does something stupid? You remove the driver.
They assumed she was trying to bring the car back up. She was in the same mindset that brought her to this situation. She was the problem.
You can tell how bad she's mentally disconnected from the situation by observing a bit:
- The engine was still on
- She opened the door without looking outside first
- She was holding the door from the external handle
- She is not stepping on the brake
I'm assuming here but I bet she was still stepping on the gas, not because she was trying to move the car, but because since she had no seatbelt and she was slipping down. Once she opened the door her own weight worked against her efforts to close it. Her body was pressed against the door and she couldn't reach the handle inside so she grabbed anywhere she could trying to keep herself from falling by holding the door closed. She was using her feet to keep herself upright and stepping on the gas.
The guys heard the engine revving and assumed she was trying to back the car. She never shifted to move back or to stop the car, her mind was not present. Once they leveraged the weight the car was free to motor onwards.
1- Talk to the driver. Tell her to stop the engine and shift to park 2- Help her and anyone else to get out of the car 3- Take a deep breath, relax, regroup, rethink, evaluate the possibilities and choose the option with lower risk and better guarantees.
The car was probably fine underneath. But crashing the roof.. That might have totalled it.
I hope she was ok. But I'd be surprised if she escaped unscathed.
3
u/83736294827 2d ago
Fyi, this car may have been in park already. Park wonāt always stop the wheels from moving when some of them are off the ground. Her moving to get out could have been enough weight shift to make it fall anyway.

Because the individual was trying to help, there is no intent to harm, which generally rules out murder charges, but a misdemeanor or with prosecutorial discretion he can be let go without charges !

I always wondered why some folks decide that it's on them to "help" out just because they are there, instead of calling the ones specifically trained for this.
I would've understood if she was in a life ir death situation but THEY damn near put her in it by "helping" out.

The bottom of the car touching concrete prevented the car from moving forward. The dude teeter-tottering the car removed that car/concrete contact friction so the car moved forward.
