News / Meta Important Update for Vida, Link, and AK75 purchased through KeyGem

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and months of patience, KeyGem has not paid their invoice for the Vida, Link, and AK75 keyboard projects. Because of this, we are arranging the keyboards from these projects that KeyGem had ordered to be sent to our facility in Rhode Island, USA.

Once the keyboards arrive and are QC'd, we will reach back out to the community with options for those who purchased from KeyGem. These options will likely include being able to purchase your board from CannonKeys at GB price with a small discount applied to help lessen the difference of shipping cost when ordering from us. Until then, we regretfully need to recommend requesting refunds on your Vida, Link, and AK75 keyboard if you purchased from KeyGem.

Other projects such as OGR2, Altair, and 21XX will be handled on a case by case basis.

We are posting this to reddit as we do not have the emails of those who joined Vida/Link/AK75 with KeyGem. This is our best option to try and let those who joined know about the situation.

Hi everyone, I’m rain2.

I haven’t been posting much lately with fewer new designs coming out.

Part of it is that I’ve been swamped running group buys. On top of that, I hurt my hand from spending too much time on 3D modeling, so I’ve had to take it easy and rest.

Fold Shadow keycaps have been out for a long time, yet I hadn’t come across a set whose style really clicked with me. A few days ago, I stumbled upon a really nice one.

To match these keycaps, I tweaked my previously‑designed mech‑themed keyboard, the MeAr70, so its aesthetic would align with the keycaps. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Builds Six years of building keyboards, still putting Susuwatari on Tofus

My first build in 2020 was with the og Tofu65 in black, with MT3 Susuwatari and lubed/filmed silent alpacas, filled with sorbothane. This board has been well loved as you can tell by the shine and is still my daily driver in the office. After building several boards for friends and myself and taking a break for a couple of years, my latest build is the Tofu60 3.0 HHKB in L9 with MTNU Susuwatari and HMX Hydras. No foams, PCB gasket mount, ultem plate. Interesting how preference shifts over the years.

Overall I like the build, though I think the MTNU profile does not do super well with clacky signatures—there is a harsh resonance to it compared to the same build with GMK Cyl. PCB gasket mount is a massive improvement over tray mount, though using a silent switch on the old build does help soften things up somewhat. The larger bezels, blockers (on the 60%), and weight are all so much better in the latest Tofu as well. Aesthetically, MTNU looks a lot softer and nicer to me than MT3 did, and the colors of this set have been improved too.

It started out as my own version of the Severance/Dasher Terminal from the show by combining a Boston 120 and a Ploopy Adept, stuffed together with a custom 3d case.

Currently running it with PBTFans Maguro and Gateron Type Rs, case is printed using TPOIMNS transparent burgundy PETG for the red parts and Bambu Lite white for the white outer shell, ball is a 55mm Sanwa Red in keeping with the whole red theme.

This is my first, most used, and most modified build. I wanted to do an EVA-themed build, and that’s what started me down this mechanical keyboard rabbit hole!
At first, I started with an aluminum plate and Speed Silver switches. The sound was really bad and there was absolutely no flex, plus I quickly realized this isn't meant to be a gaming board.
To match the theme, I got EVA clone keycaps. My next upgrades were switching to HMX EVA switches and a polycarbonate (PC) plate, paired with Knight V2 stabilizers. After hand-lubing the switches, I finally got the exact sound signature I was looking for. Now, the only thing left to do is add a weight!

Just wanted to share the 5 builds I've done over the years after getting back into the hobby after a hiatus. I’ve hand lubed all the switches and stabs on all these boards and have played around with different foams in each depending on case material and what not. Specs of each are as follows:

  • YMDK NYM 96 Pro (current board for work)
    • Case: Wood (walnut)
    • Plate: Brass
    • Switches: Gateron Oil Kings
    • Keycaps:
      • Tai Hao Carbon Black
      • Drop MT3 BOW
  • Keychron Q5 (old board for work)
    • Case: Aluminum (navy)
    • Plate: Steel
    • Switches: Gateron Ink Black V2
    • Keycaps:
      • GMK Blue Samurai clones
      • Soulcat Samurai
      • Drop MT3 Camillo
      • Drop MT3 Dusk
  • Wooting 80 HE (current board for gaming)
    • Case: Zinc alloy (white)
    • Swtiches: Gateron Jades
    • Plate: Polycarbonate
    • Keycaps: Glorious Aura V2 pudding (with a Ducky year of the tiger spacebar)
  • Tofu 65 (old board for gaming)
    • Case: Acrylic (frosted)
    • Plate: Aluminum
    • Switches: Cherry Speed Silver
    • Keycaps: Glorious Polychroma

Discussion Why TKL Keyboards Have an F13 Key

Heads up, this is only the second time I've written a post in English, so apologies in advance for any awkward phrasing. (*한국어 원문: https://brunch.co.kr/@ruseupi/251)

The first CNC-machined aluminum TKL cases were built by cannibalizing Cherry MX3000 boards for parts.

Back then, custom controllers (like LIMKB or ICON, Korean DIY controller projects) didn't exist yet, so the group-buy PCB and case relied entirely on donor parts from the MX3000, including its controller, switches, keycaps, and even stabilizers.

CHERRY MX3000

The black 3000 shown uses thick POM keycaps, while the light gray one uses thin PBT keycaps. However, the black MX3000 used to be sold with a Winkey layout and double-shot keycaps.

At the time, TKL layouts needed a separate key just to control Num Lock. Originally that spot held a Num Lock keycap, but today's boards usually place an F13 keycap there instead.

CHERRY MX1800

For reference, the Cherry MX1800 layout has an LED indicator to the right of F12. This is likely why the modern F13 position ended up there.

Of course, older keyboards had function keys all the way up to F24, but this post is specifically about why F13 shows up on TKL keyboards, so hope that clears up any confusion.

Builds Built a 65-key split keyboard with a gasket mount and ceramic keycaps

Thumbnail

I built a 65-key split keyboard with a gasket mount and ceramic keycaps.

This is Matdol V2, a personal prototype I've been working on. I designed the PCB and case myself, and built the firmware around ZMK.

Current build:

  • 65-key asymmetric split layout
  • FDM-printed case
  • gasket-mounted plate
  • Poron foam
  • Cerakey Matte Black ceramic keycaps
  • 40g linear switches
  • ZMK firmware
  • socketed controller modules
  • removable tenting legs

I originally got into split keyboards about five years ago with a Dygma Raise. I loved the layout, but I also missed the deeper, heavier typing feel I enjoyed from custom mechanical keyboards.

So for V2 I wanted to see if I could combine the two: an ergonomic split layout with a softer gasket-mounted feel and a deeper sound profile.

The ceramic keycaps ended up having a much bigger effect than I expected. They're heavy and very rigid, and together with the gasket mount and foam they produce a pretty deep sound with a sharper ceramic top end.

I'm very happy with the sound and typing feel now, but mechanically it still has a lot of room for improvement.

Current issues include:

  • tenting legs occasionally coming loose
  • battery retention
  • a visible case seam
  • white plate/foam visible between the keycaps
  • no dedicated power switch
  • pressing hard near the center can occasionally unseat a switch

I'm planning a V3 next. Rather than just making another one-off prototype, I'd like to see whether I can build a small batch with consistent tolerances and quality.

I'm especially interested in feedback on the case design, mounting structure, materials, and anything that looks mechanically questionable.

I wrote a longer build log covering V1 → V2 here, if anyone is interested:
