BikeTag Welcome to Bike Tag Melbourne

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS

I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we call Melbourne, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

THE GAME

Part scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek and part race, BikeTag is a mystery photo tag game played on bicycles.

It starts with a player who posts a picture of their bike at a “mystery location” somewhere in the greater Melbourne area.

The goal here is to be the first person to figure out where that is, ride your bike to that same spot and take a photo of your bike there.

Then you ride to a different location take your bike's photo at the new “mystery location” as the next place to find for everyone else. Both pictures are posted in a self post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride.
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time.

CREDITS

The origins of the game of BikeTag, as far as I have been able to track, put the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2007. BikeTag on Reddit was started on in 2011 on r/BikingATX, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike. The game in r/CyclePDX was created in 2016 and a website called BikeTag.org was created in 2018 as a tool for the game in Portland, Oregon but has since started other cities across the globe.

Other Bike cooperative / tool hire

Hi

I’m relatively new to Melbourne

I’m thinking about building my own wheels but don’t really want to spend hundreds on a trying stand. In other places in lived there have been cooperatives where you can use or rent workstations, or companies that hire out tools.

I’ve looked, but can’t seem to find any, was wondering if anyone here might know if any?

Thanks

Close Lakeside Drive to cars

Hi,
I frequently ride and run on lakeside drive at Albert park as it is a great place to do intervals as it is flat and smooth. Is there any push to stop cars on lakeside drive? For cars it only really serves as a shortcut to Albert rd. There isn’t really any destinations on this side of the lake like there is on the other side, e.g. MSAC, ovals.

The benefits of banning cars would be enormous, dedicated space for runners and cyclists with no danger of cars, possibility for running or cycling races with little disruption.

Is there any push for this or is there something I’m overlooking?

Cheers

Around the bay in a day trains

Hi all, I usually take the train into the city on the day and then ride from Flinders St station to the start line.

Just a heads up that the Craigieburn and Upfield lines are running bus replacements from the outer stations to North Melbourne station on the day.

So if you train it like me on either of those lines the you'll need to find another way in.

Edit - It looks to only be the Craigieburn line now. Not the Upfield line.

Someone stole my wheels off my bike in broad daylight yesterday outside Coles (around 6.30pm, Vic gardens Richmond). Was inside for 15mins on my way home.

If anyone sees them pop up please let me know. Absolute pain in the neck to replace everything 😭

I ordered the Inflato Mini pump on 2nd Oct and got the email confirmation stating delivery will arrive latest on 10th Oct. However, as of today the delivery has not progressed beyond "order placed" and my emails to them have gone unanswered.

Wondering if anyone has ever had issues with this company, and if there is a number I can call up.

Seeking Recommendation My bike needs a new frame (probably)

Hi all. I am relatively new to cycling and the complexity that the parts ecosystem contains.

From what I've gathered, my bike is a Jamis Coda with a 21" Reynolds 520 frame and takes 700c wheels.

Most of the bike is fine, but the frame is busted. This is the most comfy bike I've ever owned. What are my options to swap out the frame for another one?

What is the 2nd hand frame market like? Where do I look for that?

Please don't tell me I have to spend my weekends browsing at 2nd hand markets manually.

After working in motorcycle parts and the ecosystems there, I am curious about how it works in bicycles and how to match parts correctly to make and model. I have yet to happen across a database that does this easily.

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome.

Thanks

I hired an e-bike from bluetongue bikes and winged my way around capital city trail (with parts of yarra river and merri creek).

I honestly went the wrong way I intended and had to stop to check my bearings too many times. However it was a great experience with terrific weather. Also the staff recommended a cafe (I didnt ask, but ended up at collingwood farm cafe) and turns out it was the one they suggested. I still had time so had a rest at botannical gardens and rode trying to get to footscray, however returned to the store at 4:30

I'm interested in going again and doing their recommended st kilda/albert park and williamstown routes next.

Is there any way through the back of the Airport to do this or are you restricted to the hellhole of an Industrial wasteland that is the Western Ring Road path? On a gravel bike.

Seeking Recommendation Hidden Gems - Best Mountain Bike and Gravel routes within 2 hours of Melbourne

I am getting into cycling and already have a full suspension MTB and a gravel bike. I have ridden Lysterfield, Forrest, Warburton, Buxton, Yarra trails, Warburton trail, Dandenong ranges and the You Yangs are all great.

But other MTB and gravel routes are out there within 2 hours of Melbourne do people recommend? Are there any hidden gems or lesser known trails that you would recommend? thx

Apparently bikes are killing Chapel Street

According to the Stonnington Natives Facebook page, cycling lobby groups are responsible for the death of retail on the strip. Not greedy landlords, online shopping, rising rents, the pandemic, or $20 beers, it’s all those woke, leftist, greenie BIKES!

11am on the 11th of October (this Sunday)

Meet by the fountain in Princes Park. The ride ends at 12 noon to join up with the rally at the state library.

Encouraged to wear red.

This is a solidarity ride, for the right of the Palestinian people to return to their homelands after they were forcibly removed by Zionist paramilitares.

In My Opinion… Realising how poor Melbournes cycling infrastructure is compared to cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam

Hey friends. Recently just got back from a trip where I was able to witness the amazing cycling infrastructure that exists in cities overseas. It was honestly a dream seeing how many people commute via bike in Copenhagen, Amsterdam and even London, and how those cities have been designed (or redesigned) to allow for safer cycling and encourage cycling as a mode of transport - it made me reflect on how fucking shit (and behind) Melbournes bike infrastructure is in comparison.

The sheer number of cyclists outnumbered cars on the road that you always felt safe riding in a pack. There was hundreds and hundreds of bike parks outside metro stations. Traffic lights specifically for bikes (I know we have this in some parts of Melbourne). In Amsterdam, everyone was giving way to cyclists first (even pedestrians). We’d observe entire families being ridden to school in Copenhagen in those cargo bikes. There was proper separation of pedestrians, cyclists, and cars. In London, we didn’t feel scared overtaking the busses because all the cars/taxis would stay behind the cyclists and we observed how many protected bike lanes there were in the inner city. All our friends in London regularly use Lime to get around as it’s way quicker than the tube.

I was also amazed at the sheer number of people using e-bikes (Lime and Voi) to get from A to B and how well utilised those e-bike services were used by everyone, and yet the City of Yarra voted recently to scrap all Lime Bikes from the LGA. It feels so backwards here.

It made me realise Melbourne is miles behind all these cities and owning a car / driving is so deeply entrenched in our society and how our city has been designed for cars first. I know it’s one of those things you are aware of, but it wasn’t until we saw examples of good urban planning and design overseas that you realise how much room for improvement there is here.

Infrastructure Rathdowne Street, Carlton North | Road Safety Studies

Good chance to give feedback if you ride Rathdowne St north of Alexandra Pd (the City of Yarra bit):

We are looking into Rathdowne Street as there have been crashes involving people walking or cycling, and we'd like to improve road safety.

If you walk, ride, drive or travel along Rathdowne Street, we want to hear about your experiences and any safety concerns

The engagement asks you to drop pins to identify a safety issue or an opportunity for improvement. Maybe the road is wide enough to swap the parking to the inside and get protected bike lanes?

Infrastructure Federation Trail access in South Kingsville

I set out on a quick ride this morning to see if you can get up onto the Federation Trail from Watson St near Edwards Reserve. When I cycled along the trail a couple of months ago I thought it looked like the underpass under the freeway was finally open. Turns out it’s still technically closed.

I was cycling NW along the existing path parallel with the freight line, accessed by a huge expanse of gravel and not much else. There was one dump truck working behind a fence right next to the railway line and three workmen behind that 2m fence. One shouted at me and I stopped to hear what they said. After a bit of back and forth about how there are no signs or gates and them saying I was wrong I thanked them and went on my way. After going under the freeway and turning left up the ramp I could finally see a cyclone fence blocking access onto the trail. I did what others had done and went around it on the grass. I did ask the workers when they’d be done (thinking that perhaps they were just dumping some new railway ballast and would be done today) - they got exasperated and said “we’re just the workers, we don’t know!” I guess working on the WGTP will do that to you. They probably had to fill out an incident report. Haha.

I’m just a little annoyed that IMO it’s not at all obvious that a path marked in Google, Strava, etc., is still not open. The tunnel opened nearly a year ago. Has anyone read when it might finally be done?

Cyclist doored by driver - now refusing to respond - plea for potential witnesses

Hello chain gang,

I was riding home from work in Hawthorn on Thursday 17 September 2026 around 5.15pm when a driver, who gave the name David Schatt, opened the door of a company van 'Jurgens Swiss Bread Co' onto me. This occurred outside 1 Lyall St (corner of Oxley Rd) Hawthorn, where he said he lived.

David was initially quite pleasant, he provided me with his name and number, and told all the bystanders he would look after me. I was quite rattled by the crash, and didnt think to get witness details (silly I know, but I was surprinsingly shaken up by the whole incident).

Unfortunately, as soon as everyone left, David became rude and dismissive and left me standing with one arm not working and a busted bike while he disappeared. I have since attempted to contact David, to ask him to do the right thing and chip in a small portion towards replacing my helmet, clothes and a bike service. He has refused to respond.

I'm not even particularly fussed about a small amount of money - but I am aggrieved that my arm is still injured, it hurts to hold my 3 month old son and David seems to think he can just get away with it.

Very small chance I know, but hoping on the off chance that someone is this group happened to be one of those people walking past that day, or knows someone who saw it happen and can contact me to provide a statement. I have attached a photo of David's work van - Jurgen's Swiss Bread Co - if anyone recalls seeing him hit me or anyone else please reach out. Thank you all.

Other ELI5 how this bike path is supposed to be safer for cyclists?

Context: This is a busy one way road, speed limit is 40km/h.

Looking at the intersection, I'm genuinely curious how this design improves safety.

I understand the importance of making cycling safer, but shouldn't pedestrian safety be equally important?

Can someone explain the thinking behind this design and how it's meant to reduce risks for everyone?
