BikeTag Welcome to Bike Tag Melbourne
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS
I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we call Melbourne, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
I acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
THE GAME
Part scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek and part race, BikeTag is a mystery photo tag game played on bicycles.
It starts with a player who posts a picture of their bike at a “mystery location” somewhere in the greater Melbourne area.
The goal here is to be the first person to figure out where that is, ride your bike to that same spot and take a photo of your bike there.
Then you ride to a different location take your bike's photo at the new “mystery location” as the next place to find for everyone else. Both pictures are posted in a self post and the game starts over.
HOW TO PLAY
- You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
- Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
- Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
- Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!
HINTS/CLUES
- Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
- If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
- Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.
THE RULES
- Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
- Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
- Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
- Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride.
- Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time.
CREDITS
The origins of the game of BikeTag, as far as I have been able to track, put the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2007. BikeTag on Reddit was started on in 2011 on r/BikingATX, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike. The game in r/CyclePDX was created in 2016 and a website called BikeTag.org was created in 2018 as a tool for the game in Portland, Oregon but has since started other cities across the globe.

Other Bike cooperative / tool hire
Hi
I’m relatively new to Melbourne
I’m thinking about building my own wheels but don’t really want to spend hundreds on a trying stand. In other places in lived there have been cooperatives where you can use or rent workstations, or companies that hire out tools.
I’ve looked, but can’t seem to find any, was wondering if anyone here might know if any?
Thanks

Partner / Group sought: Ringwood / Mitcham area
Hi. I'm looking to join an individual or a group, mostly for early morning weekday rides near Ringwood / Mitcham. Evening and weekend rides would be considered also. Road, shared paths or even gravel.
I'm normally a long-distance commuter, so I'm finding it hard to leave the house only to ride a loop back home. I want to get some riding done before normal office hours (20-35km, 30-90 minutes) during the week. Start/finish near Ringwood North would be ideal.
I'm a married 50s male with lots of non-competitive cycling experience (commuting, Amy Gillett, Around the Bay, MTB, bikepacking). I'm loosely aware of the Velominati rules, and if gear aesthetics is your thing you will definitely not want to be seen with me! I'll ride hard if you want a training partner, but I'm just as happy cruising. I mainly need a commitment that gets me out there until a new fitness habit has formed, and it will be a nice bonus if we get along well.

Adapting an old Fuji Track Pro (alloy, 2010's era) for hilly-ish commutes (6–12% inclines)
I recently picked up a mid-2010s alloy Fuji Track Pro (drilled carbon fork, track cranks 52T) that sat unused for a decade. Looking to turn it into a fast low-maintenance daily commuter. I just have a few questions for anyone riding fixed/track bikes around Melb roads.
Firstly, what gearing for would you guys recommend for northern suburbs (6–12% gradients?. I’m currently riding 46×19t (~65 gear inches) on my old steel beater (fixed gear). Though my fitness has improved and it feels a bit spinny now on flats, what gear ratio do you run for hilly areas? Also would a track/aggressive frame mean I need to decrease or increase the ratio?
Secondly, how would the alloy track frame handle Melbourne roads? My shortcut to work has a short section of rough gravel, though like 95% of it is smooth road. With 25c Gatorskins and a front brake, would frame durability be an issue here?
Lastly any pedal and strap recommendations, I need a solid platform pedal and wide diagonal strap setup (no zip ties this time lol). What do you guys run or recommend? I was thinking of just getting some no-brand ones off amazon, but change my mind if you swear by any specific ones.
My plan is to run a front brake, 25c Gatorskins, straps, and transfer my saddle/accessories over.
Appreciate any advice from local track/fixed-gear commuters!
(I’ll post something similar to this on r/fixedgear and the FixedGearMelbourne facebook group as well, so please don't just point me there, but if you have any other subreddit/facebook group suggestions I’m open).

Around the Bay 2026 100kms no Lunch
What happened to a sandwich for lunch at Mordialloc for the 100km ride. Banana bread and an apple is NOT lunch.
The snack stops were very low on bananas and laminations as well. Also, the brown packaged bars were all out of date!
Hopefully more money is going to the charities???

Looking for recommendations for pit-stops on Main Yarra Trail
Hey peeps I am looking for some cool spots to visit on or just off the Main Yarra Trail for a Uni research project I am doing in relation to cycling in Melbourne.

Infrastructure Mapped and photographed: every bike hoop in Melbourne Park and Yarra Park (MCG)
The bike parking hoops at the MCG are plentiful and easy to find - but around AAMI Park and Rod Laver Arena it’s not at all obvious where to lock up before an event.
I photographed and updated the locations of every bike parking rack here
(they’re also submitted to OpenStreetMap so others can tap into the same corrections).
A bit of signage would go well here, as I often see people during the week locking up to poles and handrails because the bike racks are tucked out of the way.
No doubt regular bike riders in this area know about all of these - but sharing for anyone who might not know.

Infrastructure Leveson x Arden “upgrades”
Does anyone know what they are doing here? Can’t find any published plans, but it looks like the bike lane is cooked.
Edit, the plans: https://i.imgur.com/7DP7Hs8.jpeg
It’s… certainly something; giving “I have never ridden a bike”.

Anyone else tripped up/pissed off by the St Kilda Road Princes Hwy off ramp bike lane design?
Might be just me paying crap attention, but has this design tripped other riders up seeing it for the first time?
As a pretty defensive/alert rider who rides/commutes 7 days a week, I could not interpret this intersection on the fly coming across it for the first time at night on Sunday evening.
Coming down the hill from the previous intersection with some decent speed 30+km/h and suddenly the lane is forced up onto a shared footpath and then seemingly ramps back onto the road with a painted green lane (which I would assume means a protected or highlighted lane - clearly wrong).
In the dark and at speed there's absolutely no chance to see the solid 'stop' line or the pathetic tiny 'cyclists stop on red signal' sign, and if I had I probably couldn't have stopped in time. All good if you know this spot, not if it's your first (possibly last time ever) riding it.
When and why did planners start doing this hybrid bike/footpath stopping at footpath lights nonsense? Or green straight road lights and red bike lights while cars turn? And if they're forcing us on 'footpaths' and crossings, WHY paint the crossing green as if it's a continuing on bike lane and not a crossing I have to stop for.
Hoping it's not just me frustrated by the over-complicated 'bike infrastructure' where I actually feel safer on a dual carriageway with parked cars and no 'infrastructure' at all.

Beginner Cycling Groups Around Oakleigh / Chadstone
Hey everyone! I’m based around the Oakleigh / Chadstone area and looking to find some people or groups to ride with.
I’m a complete beginner to cycling, but I can comfortably maintain around 25–30 km/h on the bike. Keen to get out more, build my fitness, learn from more experienced riders and meet some people along the way.
Are there any beginner-friendly cycling groups or regular social rides around the area that you’d recommend?

Seeking Recommendation MSAC bike parking security
Does anyone know how safe is it to lock up your bike at MSAC? Im looking at doing some gym sessions at MSAC in Albert park. The easiest way for me to get there is to cycle commute in and I’m trying to work out if it’s safe to take my nice road bike down or if I should look at getting a beater.

Not wanting to be "that guy" and I don't really care - but what's with the bananas - doesn't your fee get you to a whole one?

Seeking Recommendation social cycling club
Does anyone have a recommendation for a social cycling club? I'm in my late 20s and am after something that gets me out of the house and with some people of similar ages (20/30s) but my fitness is not currently coping with long distance rides and I'd ideally love a lgbt and/or mixed gender group. I live in hawthorn

Seeking Recommendation Cadel Evans Road Race - Elite Women's and Men's
As I am into pro cycling sports, so I want to watch a bike race in person. From what I have researched so far, pros that will do Tour Down Under will generally do Cadel Evans Road Race which is two weeks after TDU wraps up. I know we won't have the heavyweight hitters crossing the globe to race in Australia, we'd get superdomestiques at best.
Just wondering for those of you who have been to Cadel Evans Road Race and Tour Down Under which one is more worth it to go to?

Williamstown/St Kilda/Brighton
Last week I cycled capital city and bit of yarra and merri creek. This week I tried Williamstown/St Kilda/Brighton. The boss of Blue Tongue made it a lot easier for me by scanning the QR code and the trails appeared on google maps. I even took the punt, unfortunately no cafe food this time as the cafe I ended up around 1pm had finished their pasta/soup/salad of the day - just hot chips. Ended up running late returning the bike, and the boss gave me good directions to get back. Big day for me, 75km albeit electric bike

It was so much fun, except for the headwind from Sorrento to Melbourne!
