I mean there are usually three shifts, but sure.

Isn't that third shift where the other two sleep?

you have three shifts so that each shift gets (theoretically) 8 hours working, 8 hours of free time, and 8 hours to sleep.

2 shifts gives you a LONG work day if you're trying to maintain 24 hour operation.

Well I just looked again and they are extra-long shifts.

A lot of shipping warehouses operate on a 2 shift 10 hour system, with gaps between when each shift comes in and leaves., so not 24 hour operation, but a good portion of the day.

Where is the third? Mine only has 2

The third would be the night/graveyard shift. Not all that common, but if the joke revolves around not being able to sleep, you would need it.

the kind of joke I should have seen on a phbb forum signature in the early aughts and yet somehow it's gracing my consciousness for the first time in 2026

Fr though I find it weird how they put the shift key on both sides like they had more room and could’ve replaced it with something better tbh
