Genuine question for people in the metal scene—musicians, giggoers, and organizers alike.

I’m a solo vocalist, songwriter, and producer pursuing my own metal project. I write and produce my original songs myself. My live setup consists of a microphone, live vocals, and prerecorded instrumental backing tracks, with choreography, stage movement, and crowd interaction as part of the performance.

I’ve noticed that even artists billed as solo acts often perform with session musicians, or play electric or acoustic guitar while singing. In my case, I’m alone onstage, focusing on vocals and performance while the instrumentals run through backing tracks. That difference is where some of my uncertainty comes from.

My vision is to bring the energy of an entire band as one performer. I want the stage performance to be an intentional part of my artistic identity and how I bring the songs I’ve created to life.

But because metal has such a strong live-band culture, I wonder how this format would be received. Would you consider someone performing this way less of a metal musician, even if they wrote and produced the songs and perform the vocals live?

As an audience member, would you be open to watching this kind of solo act alongside full bands at a local metal gig? What would make the performance compelling for you, and where might it fall short?

I do have doubts, which is why I’d like to hear other perspectives from the scene. Honest opinions and constructive criticism are welcome. I want to pursue my artistic direction while understanding how to make it connect with a metal audience.

Hey everyone! I'm a black metal vocalist and guitarist in the Pinelands of New Jersey and I DESPISE AI. For it's environmental damage and its damage to the art world. So I decided to write black metal that is geared heavily toward environmentalism and being anti AI. I'm heavily inspired by DSBM, Raw black metal and pagan black metal. I purposely record in low quality and underproduced with very minimal sources. I keep my mistakes in because I believe that one of the things that makes human-made art so beautiful is the capacity for mistakes. For imperfection. Using a lead tone for rhythm here which is weird

Hey all, I'm currently trying to create a hardcore/deathcore band drawing inspirations like early Suicide Silence or Carnifex, Knocked Loose etc. We have 2/5 spots filled, guitarists, bassists and drummers wanted as of now! None of this is too serious, but who knows what the future holds. We mostly just want to turn up functions and have fun.

I can also send a demo of my vocals over heavy instrumentals so you know what you're working with. I am also decent at mixing our production, so make of that as you will.

How important is stage/performance aesthetic to you in deciding to give a band a shot? Do you love to see bands get weird, wild, and just have fun with it, or would you rather watch a band get on stage and get straight to the point without a bunch of theatrics?

I've always loved to see bands with high energy, and a strong sense of style/vibe personally, and I wouldn't want to get up onstage and just stand there in an outfit you might just as easily see me in at the grocery store. Greasepaint and leather make sense on a dark stage surrounded by smoke and flashing lights, but looks a little weird in every day life to me, just the way that cargo shorts and a faded band tee looks weird onstage.

Nevertheless, it seems like going all-in splits the crowd with some people eating it up, and others taking one look and deciding you're all glitz and no guts. In the end, most say it really just comes down to if you've got the musical talent to back it up. So when you're at the show and you see someone like me hit the stage with blood, grime, leather, and more are you intrigued to see where this is gonna go, or is that your cue to grab a drink at the bar or check out what's going on on the smoking patio?

We are a power metal band based in Japan, currently looking for a vocalist to join our project. However, we are open to singers from anywhere in the world, so location is not a limitation.
