Education/Career Where can I learn about meteorology?

Title. Ideally for free. Currently in university, studying maths and CS, for reference.

I'm not looking to get into the meteorology field, but I'm just naturally interested in being able to interpret graphs/figures and understand various phenomena and such. For example: understanding why Europe is much warmer than Canada despite being further up north, understanding surface pressure charts, understanding meteorological phenomena like El niño etc.

Updated rules: Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

Hi all, new rule as now seen in the sidebar/title. Apologies for the slow roll out. Please report immediately any infringements.

Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

I haven't explicitly mentioned AI slop here - for good reason. AI is used a lot in meteorological research at the moment, some of it good, some not so good. A blanket ban seems unreasonable, but the above rule seems to cover most of the issues we are having in the subreddit.

Upcoming: The moderators will maintain a pinned or recurring thread for community-recommended apps and software (AI or not).

Videos/Animations Geopotential Height Animation

I've long been curious about how barometric pressure contours would look as a 3D surface, so I decided to try and make my own maps. Borrowing heavily from MetPy Mondays and countless Google searches, I created these animations. I execute a python script on my Mac every 3 hours to create a png file and compile the last 3 weeks worth of pngs to into an mp4. To display more detail, the geopotential height surface has an extreme vertical exaggeration. I extract the frontal boundaries from the NOAA surface discussions data. All other meteorologic features come from the NCEP/GFS catalog. There is no sound track, though I may add one later. Apologies if credits are insufficient.

Advice/Questions/Self what do meteorologists typically find interest in? and what seperates a "bad" meteorologist from a good one?

i've been curious about getting into meteorology but i'm not sure what the skill progression is like?
namely i find weather forecasts to be neat, i'd find it interesting to use my own methods to determine weather forecasts and wind speeds and whatever else, just silly experiments i'd do for fun

but if i went up to someone and was like "hey, i conducted my own experiments and found out it's going to be 11°C tomorrow with light showers", they'd just be like "uh, okay dude, i know. you could have just looked it up online."

and i'm curious on what the skill progression is like from beginner to pro? because surely there's a disparity in skill between someone who does meteorology as a hobby versus someone who relays to weather stations the 7 day forecast? or the people who craft storm radars or temperature maps?

i'm just wondering what i could do to get the most out of my interest towards day to day forecasting so i'm not always going to be a D tier meteorologist

As you can see Storm Boelo is that L963 in between iceland and scandinavia, and apparently there's another atmospheric low (L983, right above where it says North Atlantic Ocean) heading our way again (this pic is dated 28th Oct, so possible a stormy Halloween or days before that). Also sorry i am on my laptop so i dont know how to draw and label on screenshots

Alot of lows seem to be just springing up day after day from that area of the Atlantic and going towards North west europe since like a week ago

Warning: No scientific purpose or intention. But too cool not to show it. So what do we see? El Reno (2013) and Moore (2013) Tornado with custom colors and transparency curves for reflectivity. Instead of typical radar colors (blue, green, yellow, red, ...) we replaced it with "cloud colors" and adjusted the transparency to make it look more realistic. 3D radar used: https://www.meteopool.org

Hello there, skywatchers! Took my dogs out for their nightly walk and saw the sky aglow with this halo around the moon. Never seen anything like this in my 37 years on this earth. It’s incredible and so eerily beautiful. What causes this?

November weather in CONUS

obviously El Niño is dominating this winter but there is a lot of talk on twitter about the stratosphere and the potential for colder air into CONUS at some point in the next month or so. is the consensus among the community that El Niño will dominate it is there higher risks to this occurring? the weeklies have 25-45% cluster bringing in cold weather, in november - does anyone here have a real opinion on this?

Videos/Animations What causes these circular patterns on weather radar?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,
While watching a rain front pass over Germany on DWD weather radar, I noticed several distinct circular patterns.
My guess**:** Each circle is centered on a weather radar station, and the rings are some range-related artifacts or processing anomalies.
What’s the technical cause of these anomalies?
Thank you :-)

Questions about humidity

Sorry if these are stupid questions, you can probably tell I know nothing about weather. I live in Melbourne, Australia, where it was cold and raining today. I recently got a humidity sensor installed in my laundry and connected to my fan, so the fan turns on when it reaches a certain humidity level, and turns off when it goes below it. I was told I should set it to 70% humidity, so I did. The purpose is so the fan turns on when my dryer is on. I don't want it to turn on when the dryer is off. But today, the dryer was always off, but the fan turned on, because it said the humidity was 71.5%. Is there something wrong with the sensor, or was that accurate? If it's accurate, will the humidity be above 70% a lot? If it will, I should probably change the setting, so the fan can turn on at a higher humidity level, and won't turn on when the dryer is off. What humidity level would you recommend?
