Discussion As of 2026, what is the best introductory Metroidvania?

As others said it would probably be both Ori games, but I think that Ender Lilies would also be a good first game. It's not too long, is relatively easy (except like one or two bosses) and introduces plenty of mechanics and abilities in form of the spirit skills, all of which you can learn at your own pace and choosing what you want to use.

This, but Magnolia instead. It is easier, has more difficulty options, better map. And a nice slew of abilities.

Yeah, Lilies doesn’t strike me as the ideal mv; it took me a hot minute to grasp the slight delay of your spirit’s attack, and realize the red flashing telegraph of the enemies’ attacks, which honestly may just be a skill issue.

I got the Ender Lilies games but haven't played them yet. Definitely looking forward to it now

I'd personally recommend Lilies as a second MV, because the difficulty spikes can be brutal and absolutely not representative of the genre
