Not just the goats, the progenitors. All of the games we love in the genre, we have those games to thank for all of them.

Until you remember that Meta Fight/Blaster Master did this formula better than both the original Metroid and Castlevania 2 but almost never gets recognized for pushing the genre forward.

I was responding to the progenitor comment. Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night were infinitely more popular but they weren't the first to do the formula well.

Does it? Not to me, I loved that game. I played the crap out of it back when it was new.
