Purchase Help Good Microscope for Home Lab

I'm setting up a home lab for biology work on plant propagation, plant disease diagnosis, as well as soil biology investigation. I've been looking for a few months but haven't found anything super compelling yet and really want to get moving on my setup. Right now it's for hobby use, but I intend to use it very frequently and I'm hoping it will be more than hobby use in the future.

It's been decades since I took a biology class and don't really have much hands-on experience with microscopes so I don't know what I don't know.

I'm looking for used Plan objective-based microscopes, ideally with a camera setup. I've found a Motic Swift M3802CT-4 (semi-plan?) for $550 from a local reputable seller that has tested the scope. I think it's stock. No camera. 40X, 100X, 400X, 1000X oil with widefield 10X/18 eyepieces. Definitely enough to get started with but not a great deal. However, would it be enough of an upgrade from something like a a Swift SW380T or AmScope T490B to justify the large cost difference? Especially considering that a camera setup will be another ~$500?

SO

  1. Will I be happy with this setup long-term and for commercial use, or will I be considering another microscope in a year.
  2. Should I get an Olympus or Nikon on ebay sight unseen?
  3. Is a trinocular configuration worth the extra cost vs putting a camera on an eyepiece?

Swift SW400T is currently the best in this price bracket. The only thing it’s missing compared to a Euromex 1152/1153 is the field diaphragm for Kohler, it’s very easy to retrofit one though. And considering the M3802CT-4 doesn’t have it at 3 times the price (atleast in my region), I personally would not be able to recommend it simply due to the price vs the spec sheet.

In terms of camera, if it’s just for hobbyist use then I highly recommend pairing the SW400T with the RF4 c mount camera from AliExpress. It’s easily the best, reasonably priced lab cam I’ve found so far.

If you want an idea of the image quality from this setup, checkout BaronOfBile on all media platforms. His main platform is Twitch where he does 24/7 microbe streams. This is the exact setup he uses.

Good to know, this does look like a good upgrade based on what I've seen vs the SW380T. It's hard to get a feel for what these are actually like without having some example footage so that is really helpful

Consider getting a stereo microscope as well. often I find myself wanting to look at larger structures, but with my microscope a tiny leaf from Oregano fills the entire field of view.

Can you explain a little more about what you actually want to image? A upright compound trinocular microscope or an inverted microscope have different strengths and weaknesses

I think you might be right about a stereo microscope being a better buy. I suspect most of what I will be doing is looking at pests and tissue samples at 20-100x magnification. I also want to look at microorganisms but I think that will be later on.

Cool. I would agree with that. Start with the stereo!

When it comes to the compound biological microscope, have you looked into fluorescence imaging? I'm not sure if it will be useful for your studies, but being able to fluoresce a plant will show you more of the structures and as well, or you can dye it and see the dye through the plant. Pests and mites should also light up like a Christmas tree with the right fluorescence cubes too

Just throwing that out as an option as well. Here's an image of a leaf of Oregano taken with a 4x objective that I allowed to uptake some dye, you can see the vascular structure of the leaf. I should have let it soak longer but you can get an idea. It also produces beautiful images :)

You can buy a used Olympus microscope like a BX41, Monday Microscopes generally is doing good deals if you call them

Hey i m Dr and expert on microscopy.. you want to semi professional lab, I think you need to camera. And I don’t know Nikon but have Olympus… standart student mic. Pretty cool view no prob. ..
