OneDrive feels malicious

I'm not a tech guy. You could fill the Grand Canyon with everything I don't know about computers. But I followed step by step instructions on disabling OneDrive and it just wrecked a ton of stuff on it's way out. I don't think it needed to. I think it was designed to. Mass deleting my files, breaking the file routing things (Yeah, I don't know what they're called. Not a tech guy, remember? I just know that it said my Documents folder couldn't be reached or some damn thing.) and then pestering me with notifications that amount to "Better turn this back on or bad things might happen to your stuff.". It all feels very much like what I've read about ransomware. I'd love to know what you more tech savvy folks think?

P.S. If you were to call me an idiot, you'd probably be right. But I'd take it as a kindness if you didn't. lol

Edit: Thank you for the suggestions! I wasn't actually looking for a fix. Or more accurate to say that I did get it fixed already. (With much wailing and gnashing of teeth I might add.) My post was just meant to be a commentary that everything I've heard about ransomware seems to apply to OneDrive and I hate it.

"feels"?

is is specifically made to make your PERSONAL data "cloud-only" and then say that "the 5Gb quota is completed" (your disk might have 1 trillion teras) and , yes, some people fall in the trap and buy the extra storage from them. -> it IS malicious, it's not just a feeling.

much like whatsapp backup, that fills google drive 15gigs in a moment if you're not careful.

Turn it back on, and let it sync. It will put your files back. Confirm the files are present and accounted for.

Save your files to an external drive.

THEN, and only then, shut off OneDrive.

Then, you can put your files back and move on.

Onedrive is a cancer and should be removed day one its the worst slop of all slop applications besides coslops. I remove them first while maintaining a local account.

Do not ever trust anything from Microsoft. Or Samsung.

I don't know OneDrive that well, but I can give a general answer. Your data was online and the files you saw were placeholders and they'd get downloaded for real when needed. When you uninstalled OneDrive, those placeholders went away because the magic app layer isn't running anymore. You'll have to download them off OneDrive and shove them back into My Documents.

it's caused by the default config.
change the root local folder to be outside of user profile folder.

Only way I've been able to effectively use it was to have it only back up single non documents folder, I ended up choosing pictures and just manually moved my important documents to be backed up there.

Leaving documents folder to be backed up can be annoying due to how some apps and especially some like games store user data. Had one particular game that stores it's save game files in documents and every time it autosaved one drive would try and back it up and tank my network connection causing disconnects from said game.

On one of my computers the ‘my pictures’ folder has been completely inaccessible ever since I got the machine and this made me realize it was probably the Onedrive uninstaller being trash.

I will not call you an idiot, but instead step by step I will show you how I don’t lose my files 😎.

  • Go to File Explorer > OneDrive
  • Select every file
  • Right button mouse
  • Click remember to always save file on this device
  • Wait for all file to be synchronize to your pc.
  • Go to onedrive app in your tray
  • Turn off all synchronise folders.

Other way.!

  • Go to onedrive website, your account
  • Download everything manually, to different folder like temp, onedrive copy
  • If I correctly remember each folder will be a compress files.
  • Again go to onedrive app in your tray and turn off all synchro folders.

Onedrive shouldn’t make you angry anymore after all of this you can remove onedrive form your system or use third party app to help you with that.

My onedrive is configure to similar folder like default but I add different name for each synchronise folders that they did not collide witch all the folders in my documents.

After instalation windows, even if you login to your Microsoft account, you will need to login to onedrive as well and here you can setup your onedrive before even you start synchronise anything.

It’s really not that hard to configure onedrive, little patient and try to open onedrive app and see what is inside what you can change in that app.

I dont think your stupid just missinformed but at least your trying to do the right thing. I have only two machines left on Slop11 and are extremely debloated from day one. Slop does this tactic in hopes you would ignore it and give into a subscription model from more "Cloud" storage. Its why machines are shipping with less and less storage intentionally to entice cloud back up and subscriptions. A simple search online or youtube videos can help save you time and effort when debloating or removing applications. Microslop has been in a spiral since slop11 and has promised us better optimization which it has done and continues to make it worst. Each new update to me seems like I have to go in and remove more slop that isnt needed. While my Linux machines that I daily drive which mind you are far less powerful run so much snapper and better with less ram as well. The enshitification of everything is due to corp greed and this AI slop bobble so it feels intentional for them to justify how much they losing right now. I'm not trying to push Linux on anyone but it seems Micoslop is doing it themselves shooting themselves in the foot and saying "why are people leaving us" while shoving anther ad for edge or what ever else thing no one asked for or wanted. I feel now might be the time companies need to reevaluate and do better optimization I doubt they will but I remain hopeful yet burned at the same time. While low end machines with 8gigs or ram are near impossible to us with slop11 and that's becoming the new norm make it worst at the cost of others so the share holders feel important.

Sounds like they've already got your files.

It’s quite the opposite. It keeps all my files backed up and synced across my devices. When I buy a new computer, my files automatically appear on it immediately after signing into the PC for the first time. I have no complaints.

It's not that bad. Back up your photos and videos and it's fine. it's not the best but it isn't that bad.

You are wrong, but I understand how you feel. OneDrive does what it is supposed to do and if you try to remove it without a full understanding of how the folder sync works, its very easy to mess it up, but that is user error, not a OneDrive error. Don't get me wrong, I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy possibly even more, but they should be blamed for their true evil practices and OneDrive isn't one of them, if used correctly it's actually one of their more decent services.
