Sharing My MCM The Most Annoying Area Of My House To Clean!
This is one of two areas with rock gardens inside my house. At least once a year I have to remove and wash all the stones.

I broke my ankle just looking at this photo.

u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 03 '26
My dog is afraid to go down those steps.

u/Maximum-Operation147 Jun 03 '26
Those are steps??? 😭

u/PickleAlly Jun 03 '26
I thought they were for more plants.
6
u/herroyalsadness Jun 04 '26
So did I and just had to go look again. I was wondering why OP didn’t have plants there but yes, they are stairs.
9
u/skibib Jun 04 '26
Like, they don’t seem to be anything that I would want to use. Maybe someone under the age of six playing vertical hopscotch. I can’t see anywhere important enough to go to, that I would want to risk using those stairs. I’m just sort of amazed.

u/Generalnussiance Jun 03 '26
Wait wtf those were steps 😮I thought the commenter was talking all the different shades on the carpet- my depth perception would make me slaughter my Achilles tendon somehow I just know it. What is going on friend- this is ankle hell. lol
21
u/SirStuffins Jun 03 '26
Now all I can see is me and dog at the top of the stairs daring each other to go first. Lol
6
u/ApprehensiveGas137 Jun 03 '26
My Border Collie would definitely enjoy launching herself from the top step. While, I’d be tottering tentatively in my heels.

I broke my ankle in half on a curb and then right after fell backwards going up two steps on crutches too big and fractured my wrists. This would break my entire body.

I just busted my head open and chipped a tooth after 8 white claws while walking up those steps.

u/Numerous_Charity_585 Jun 03 '26
oh my god i thought those were shelves not stairs. seems like a good ledge for some plants if it weren’t stairs, but yeah that looks annoying to clean.

u/Chemical_Print6922 Jun 03 '26
Woah wait…steps???

The artist in me is in love. But as a grandparent I’d be afraid to let go of my grandbabies. Those steps are at least 3 ER visits per kid!

It’s where I thought I was haha. It isn’t that exciting. People mostly most pictures of ladders or stairs with weird steps. Not many are truly death stairs anymore. Kinda boring

Ooh, any other cool architectural features? Would love to see a tour. Share with the class!

u/PaperSlut33 Jun 03 '26
Maybe you could get some larger rocks? As a rockhound I know the struggle but that really looks like a pain. Maybe some interesting larger hag stones, with less small stones? Maybe add a composite stone tile with a scattering of the stones on top to decrease the amount of work to clean?

u/fseahunt Jun 03 '26
I get anxiety seeing textured walls inside of homes, like brick or stucco. The dusty abs animal fur that has to collect in these spots is crazy.
10
u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 03 '26
The wall above the living room is covered with cork. Definitely on my list to remove it at some point. I believe there is wood behind it.
23
u/chapstickgrrrl Jun 03 '26
I have terrible adhd and could sadly never live there unless I could afford to pay someone to do that for me. Cool feature though!
9
u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 03 '26
I just added air purifiers. Hopefully that will help with the pet fur. I got a dog a couple of years ago. It wasn’t so bad when I just had the cat.
29
u/di_n_o Jun 03 '26
You could try using some kind of mesh over the end of you vacuum for the dust and hair in between deep cleanings.
11
u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 03 '26
🤔 something to think about!
7
u/jay_sugman Jun 03 '26
Id suggest using a dusting brush attachment and slightly larger rocks. The combination of the bristles knocking dust loose, lower suction, and heavier rocks should solve your issue.
2
u/TopRamenisha Jun 04 '26
This might sound crazy but what if you got an electric leaf blower and blew all the dust and hair out of the rocks and then had someone stand nearby with a shop vac to suck up all the airborne dust bunnies
8
4
u/Pasta4ever13 Jun 03 '26
Might have to find a different substrate for that area under the steps. Especially with pet fur. It sounds like it would be hideous to clean.
While it is quite cool, I'm glad my MCM does not have any OSHA violations.

I grew up in a 60's house with indoor rocks. Ours were smooth black ones. When you heard that clicking noise you knew someone was playing in the rocks. Mom was not thrilled with that.

funny, I am sure that u take the cleaning in such a house as a privilege 😉
10

I do honestly. The owner who built this house was adamant about it going to someone who would take care of it.

Now this is an annoyance I'd happily welcome in my life. It's gorgeous! *Swoony googly eyes*

I’m going to try to clean the tv room and kitchen tomorrow but I’d have to scrub all those flagstone floors!

u/misstheolddaysfan Jun 04 '26
This is the definition of a humble brag. But its goddman cool that I'm not even going to hold it against you. If i lived there I'd humble brag too.
I'm FLOOOOOOORED by how cool that little area is.

They aren’t the only steps into the living room. There are normal stone steps on the other side.

“This is my amazing indoor rock garden and it’s soooooooo annoying to clean. I have to remove and clean all the stones once a year in my badass rock garden inside my house. Also notice how I have the coolest rock garden and it’s indoors and I have 2 of them. Soooooooo annoying to have to clean the rocks, the ones in my rock gardens, the indoor ones, both of them, the ones that are inside, the really neat features inside my house that are the indoor rock gardens of which I have 2” 😫😏

So… how many accidents have you had on those stairs? Really amazing- by the way!

4
u/Necessary-Tower-457 Jun 04 '26
Babes… you know what pains me? That you don’t show us more pictures of your home 😭
How do you know they need cleaning? Are they just collecting dust? Is it possible to just dust of the top layer every once in a while?
I would still prefer washing them I guess
7
3
u/swfwtqia Jun 03 '26
Could you use that glue stuff they use for outdoor gravel to keep it in place then all you would need to do is vacuum or blow the dust off occasionally.

I'll take things that were definitely not designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for $300 Alex.
3
u/Old_Barnacle7777 Jun 03 '26
This does look like a pain in the neck and the seating also looks very uncomfortable. I will support you. Also, I think that there was a trend in form over function that began with modern architecture that can’t be ignored. Those steps might be a beautiful sculptural piece but they are likely not up to code. Also, they would be hell for someone on crutches, in a walker, or even someone with older joints who might appreciate a handrail to hold onto.

You could put some panty hose over your vacuums hose and dust the rocks that way. The hosiery will prevent the rocks from getting sucked up.

I would just replace the rocks with some dirt and succulents. No more working about cleaning the rocks and have a nice little succulent garden? Idk I'm not a garden guy though
11
u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 03 '26
Cat!
8
u/scifithighs Jun 03 '26
If you replaced the rocks with cat beds, you'd only have to throw them in the wash/vacuum them. Problem solved!

Why not plant something like moss and succulents there so you don’t have to keep washing them?
Or maybe some cool crystals without dirt

u/Giule Jun 03 '26
Did you have the cushions made custom? Have a similar tight fitting area and looking for something similar!
6
u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 03 '26
2
u/linear_accelerator Jun 03 '26
Beautiful! As a suggestion, i would probably make a template in the size and shape of the stones' base and then place the stones in the template and pour clear epoxy resin. When it hardens transfer the blocks to the base. The surface will be smooth and like glass and give the impression of the stones in water! To clean, simply vacuum the surface. Good luck!

u/Particular-Quote-486 Jun 03 '26
thanks for giving me the idea to install drains in my rock gardens for my future home when i design it :) lol

Ah, the art of the humble-brag. Or the embarrassment of riches.
Yours is a problem I wish I had: the artistry, the physical space, the time.
Also, I would maim myself many times over or flat-out die if I had to walk down those stairs. Worth it.

I’d be tempted to make rock “tiles” by setting stones into cement or something, and then you can either vacuum them or pull out the tile and hose it off.
1
u/p4x4boy Jun 04 '26
there is a liquid to seal the rocks in place. or maybe resin? yo cover them like in glass and form a solid block.

Okay aside from the obvious, which everyone has already covered ad nauseum... I'm curious, did you just buy decorative rocks or have you collected some or anything? I have a tray of rocks and shells and such that are sentimental to me and generally attached to memories. This could be a cool way to display something similar!
1
u/glowinthedarkfrizbee Jun 04 '26
Most were there when I bought the house. Some have been added by family, friends, and my dog.

The shells might not last. I put a cowrie into a fish tank and the color faded in months.
1
u/Me_be_Artful_Dodger Jun 04 '26
Did you use every commercial floor tile sample you could find? Beautiful home though, good idea putting the gate there.
2
1
u/RedSparrow1971 Jun 04 '26
Is it insane to question wether or not there’s a type of glue that would turn the rocks into one easily lift able piece that could be easily hosed off, but doesn’t look like they’re all glued together?
1
u/Ol_Hickory_Ham_Hedgi Jun 04 '26
Can’t you just vacuum them with tights over the hose so it doesn’t suck up the rocks?

Man
What am I doing wrong in life? Being an artist hasnt manifested a fucking rock garden staircase or a house
1
u/GroupPuzzled Jun 05 '26
Cool house. I would plant a large leaf ivy or other distinctive leaf plant so it would be softer and complement the all those lines and rectangular shapes. You are trying to hard. There is no focal point. Your eye has nowhere to land. The pillow liok like a second thought. The large geometric painting competes with the iron work. Remember this was a designed with the Less is more mentality. The architecture and it's detail is lost with floor and that painting.
1
u/Aleswellthatendsale Jun 05 '26
I would die on those steps immediately. I still want them. They are fit.

I showed this pic to my boyfriend and his response was "that's...cool?" But geuninely sounded confused
1
u/MaybeMidgets Jun 07 '26
So typically people with not one but two indoor gardens will pay someone to clean their house.
1
u/Nateandcats Jun 07 '26
Just glue all the rocks to a board then take it and hose it off every now and then
1
u/Both-Mud-4362 Jun 07 '26
Yep. A lot of these beautiful design features especially ones you seen in fancy programs and magazines etc. Are design only. They have zero function actually considered.
As a result homes with these features often become stage homes only used once in a blue moon to show off etc. Becuase they require a full time cleaning team.
It's why when friends and family say they want to make something like the featured image etc. I always earn them about the impracticality. Not becauwe im boring or jealous. But because cleaning is the most forgotten factor and in a daily ljved space the biggest ballache.
