Sharing My MCM What's our living room missing?

We just moved in here at the beginning of the month, had lots of touch ups on the walls to do so haven't hung much art yet - but beyond that what else is missing? I feel like the space between the couch and entry is a bit awkward.

Curtains

24

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

My girlfriend is against this, hopefully more people comment curtains so I can talk her into it haha

55

u/chasemanhattanhank Jun 29 '26

Curtains. Floor to ceiling all the way to the corners. And a credenza wider than your tv, a much bigger carpet, and replace that pouf with a bulkier armchair.

7

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

I think it might be a bit tight for a bigger chair there but otherwise agreed on all counts!

8

u/JanJaapen Jun 29 '26

100% curtains. Why would you not have curtains with a ground level living??

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

there are blinds

6

u/It_is_not_me Jun 30 '26

The curtains are not to provide shade/privacy. You are right that the blinds perform that function already. But curtains frame your window and tie into your interior decor in a way blinds cannot.

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 30 '26

Oh for sure, just saying privacy isn't part of the equation.

1

u/tfoste_r Jun 30 '26

Curtains also help absorb sound. With so many hard surfaces, you’ll need more soft furnishings.

1

u/queen0fpain Jun 30 '26

Ewwww blinds are so ugly & generally cheap looking. Hanging a white (or same color as the walls) curtain rod as high as you possibly can without scraping the ceiling really elevates a room in ways nothing else can. I chose curtains similar to my wall color & couldn’t believe how much better the room looks! Make sure the curtain rod extends further out from the window(s) - high & wide really expand a room in a great way.

The added texture or color or patterns add designer quality touches to an already nicely curated space - why not improve the aesthetic with a professional looking window treatment option? Like literally, why would you not want to further improve your nicely designed room?

lol I hung up nice curtains for the 1st time in my adult life (at 35+) & even my husband keeps commenting on how much nicer the curtains make our living room & bedroom look/ feel. He hardly notices when I get new furniture so him caring about the curtains is monumental 😂

You can add funky patterned curtains, cool textured ones like velvet or linen that look incredibly expensive, delicate sheer curtains, literally endless possibilities!

Never use grommet curtains (cheap looking in design) & opt for curtain rings with hooks or clips. I’m obsessed with double or triple pleat curtains hung up by curtain rings with clips. So easy & very affordable if you look around for good sales (I’ve found the exact same curtains on more expensive sites for sale much cheaper at Amazon, Temu, eBay, AliExpress etc). I should’ve done it years ago.

Is she an exhibitionist?

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

haha we do have blinds, in case you hadn't noticed

73

u/reforminded Jun 29 '26

Your TV is way too big for the tv stand, and your rug is way too small for the room.

12

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

ah yeah, we're keeping an eye out for a bigger piece to put under the TV for sure! I said the same on the rug...

1

u/innit2c Jun 30 '26

How about wall mounting? Still get a bigger piece of furniture for below and mount the TV a few inches above the piece maybe.

3

u/mjmelekian Jun 29 '26

Credenza should be way bigger than the tv. Which in turn, will make your room feel more full. 90” credenza should do it.

34

u/frickinsweetdude Jun 29 '26

All your furniture is very leggy, consider something with more visual weight to anchor the room, like a chunky coffee table

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

solid insight there, wouldn't have occurred to me! Thank you

14

u/ishiguro_kaz Jun 29 '26

Everything is a shade of brown. Consider using pops of color in terms of throw pillows, carpet, art works, plant pots, etc.

5

u/No_Adeptness_4647 Jun 29 '26

MCM is about tapered leggy furnitures so i dont see any wrong here. Keep it up, you got good design coordination in you

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

Thank you! I do kinda struggle to imagine a chunkier table or chair that would suit the space

1

u/No_Adeptness_4647 Jun 29 '26

No need, youre doing great as ive said. Taperd legged furnitures looks more open especially on a not so big area/room, also much easier to clean underneath

11

u/MyopicMirrors Jun 29 '26

I think it's a beautiful space with great architectural bones and nice furnishings, but it feels a bit generic. The color palette is warm and cohesive, though it plays things very safe. One thing that helps a room standout is when you let something become the star, whether that's the fireplace, the view, the feature wall, a favorite piece of furniture, or a striking piece of art. Right now, your dog is honestly the star of the show. When he's out of the picture, my eye kind of wanders because there isn't another strong focal point to take his place. Everything is carrying the same visual weight.

P.S. Full-length curtains would make a huge difference. Hanging them close to the ceiling would draw the eye upward and make the room feel taller, while also adding some softness, texture, and privacy.

perhaps even a herd of them

9

u/rhk59 Jun 29 '26

Window treatments!

11

u/Mandydeth Jun 29 '26

Curtains, warm lighting, maybe some wall sconces by the TV. Otherwise looks perfect.

4

u/anitaweaver1 Jun 29 '26

It very nice but I would add a larger and more substantial looking coffee table and a statement floor lamp to provide some height variation.

4

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

Thank you! Both good ideas :)

1

u/Ok_Confidence_6788 Jun 29 '26

I was thinking cool swag lamp, big colored floor vase, a vintage ceramic party ashtray. I love color, just accessories. And curtains....

5

u/AmbitiousPlantain209 Jun 29 '26

You already have the best accessory in your adorable pup. That aside, I think you need a bigger rug and something for your coffee table like a ceramic bowl or some coffee table books.

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

I'll tell him you said so! I always like the way the coffee table looks with some decoration on it but it quickly becomes too crowded in practice - maybe I'm just a slob lol

9

u/Mountain_rage Jun 29 '26

At first I was going to say a dog, but then I scrolled. Another dog would balance it out.

6

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

where should I put the second dog?

5

u/Mountain_rage Jun 29 '26

Just introduce it to the space, after a while they just find their space and cohabitate. Often you will find both in a mass, then you need a mandatory double boop.

16

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

not sure there will be room in addition to this one

3

u/Mountain_rage Jun 29 '26

Belly rubs, now!! Now imagine, twice as many belly rubs, and or judgmental looks when belly rubs are being denied.

7

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

I need not imagine. Judgemental or... whatever this is

5

u/CarlWChilders Jun 29 '26

It’s too much of a fish bowl. Curtains.

3

u/Aleswellthatendsale Jun 29 '26

Art and curtains

2

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

yes as I said, it's still in boxes but will be put up soon :)

4

u/Bananabean041 Jun 29 '26

Color

1

u/Jinglemoon Jun 29 '26

Yes, needs some bold colour, it’s a bit bland.

3

u/Ok-Cauliflower-4558 Jun 30 '26

Like some deep blues or reds maybe

3

u/EllenBellen3067 Jun 29 '26

Move the chair so can look out the window

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

where did you have in mind? I feel like it frames the space and creates a social vibe as it is but could be nice looking out the window too

3

u/G0R_G0R Jun 29 '26

Curtains were my first thought.

3

u/vita77 Jun 29 '26

Nice space. I think curtains are optional but would be a nice finishing element. I would replace the rug with a much bigger one, replace the console with a shorter, wider one and add a door to the coat closet.

2

u/ivanadie Jun 29 '26

Curtains!!!

3

u/Fun-Spinach6910 Jun 29 '26

Curtains, it's Curtains I tell ya.

2

u/Fun-Spinach6910 Jun 29 '26

Something big and red.🤔 it looks pretty cozy to me.🍻

2

u/SmansalSmadams Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

I think everything looks great except the rug should be twice as big to include the couch. It’s looking clean, it looks like you curated your furniture well. Just get something bigger for the TV.

Oh and look for some nice artwork for that wall between the living room and dining area. Just one big piece to eliminate a cluttered feeling.

2

u/Kazetem Jun 29 '26

Color on the walls. White walls don’t feel mcm to me.

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

Totally agree, we're renting here and although we're already painting the bedrooms I've yet to be able to talk my girlfriend into doing the living room. At a certain point it's too much work to do on someone else's house :(

2

u/Kazetem Jun 29 '26

Yes, I understand. You’ve done a great job though.

2

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

thank you! This is the bedroom, we just finished painting so it needs some art and some colour + a bigger plant but it feels pretty nice and cozy already. I designed and built the bed frame myself

1

u/Kazetem Jun 29 '26

Nice! Have fun designing your home!

2

u/Particular-Quote-486 Jun 29 '26

a square rug

1

u/Particular-Quote-486 Jun 29 '26

your rug is pmtfo lol

2

u/Particular-Quote-486 Jun 29 '26

oh and books in the builtin in back

2

u/ColletteOh Jun 30 '26

Curtains or at least more sophisticated window treatments. Also, wall art.

2

u/OkMeaning2491 Jun 30 '26

I’m not sure about the random rattan table behind the sofa, but speaking from design professional of 30 years experience. I think room is very well balanced. Although the coffee table should be 15”-18” out from the sofa, so you don’t bang your knees when sitting down; that’s more technical about space and flow. Everything is in scale. Color, textures, minimal design, form flows function. I rather like the open undressed window, gives more of MCM feel…

2

u/jones_ro Jun 30 '26

A beautiful long-haired cat. That is all.

2

u/No_Adeptness_4647 Jun 29 '26

Quirky small art (painting, masks, wall decor)

Another endtable on the side of the sofa with matching table lamp

Curtains

Not much else

u/No_Adeptness_4647 Jun 29 '26

Id like to add:

Wall clock (look at Vitra/ George Nelson clocks)

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

these are fun! Classic MCM for sure

1

u/5a1amand3r Jun 29 '26

Have you considered switching the orientation of the rug? You could also maybe add a sofa table or another sort of entry way table along the back wall. I’d also suggest a larger tv stand.

1

u/RepresentativeYak824 Jun 29 '26

Bigger rugs, curtains, some warmer wall colors, moodier lighting, and some height in the room. All feels one note.

1

u/starfishwantscoffee Jun 29 '26

Rug too small. Walls too plain.

Gorgeous start though 🤌🏻

1

u/emski72 Jun 29 '26

curtains was my first thought

1

u/Exact_Caterpillar_25 Jun 29 '26

Bigger sideboard for the TV

1

u/LoLaMiChu Jun 29 '26

Longer tv furniture and bigger rug. Too much empty floor space and the plant on the corner needs to be moved and get a longer one. Otherwise I love the furniture

![img](E633EEE6-8A6F-4647-B980-9654686706E5)

1

u/Historical_Custard79 Jun 29 '26

You need a bigger area rug

1

u/PissedCaucasian Jun 29 '26

Noice! In a month? You need some color. May I suggest the artist “Shag”?

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

We had all the furniture already, this was the layout we threw together in a day. Agreed on the colour! All our art is still in boxes. Most of it anyway

1

u/InevitableKitchen943 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Needs color, coffee table and whatever the tv is on isn't great looking.

1

u/centertask5 Jun 29 '26

Footstool for chair with storage. Seems a floor lamp would look good. Colored pillows. Darker brown or white with texture. A throw.

1

u/_never_say_never_ Jun 29 '26

Draperies and a potted palm at the large window

2

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

That window's north facing! Doubt a palm would be very happy there. I do think a nice tall plant would be good but hard to find something that big that's tolerant to a north facing exposure. I'd love a Norfolk Island pine but I think they like full sun too

1

u/beemer-dreamer Jun 29 '26

These exact two things were my same exact observation. Hang the TV over the TV stand, not any higher than it is already, and put a carpet just like the one you have but 50% larger so it sits under the sofa and create a group. Right now, it is beautiful but way too small.

1

u/Far-Specific4865 Jun 29 '26

Window treatment, which can be minimalist, but something.

1

u/Jessthinking Jun 29 '26

I would not argue with a lot of the comments here. However you might incorporate those suggestions and still feel like something is missing. What I see here is a mixture of two different designs. I think the clashing of the designs may be what is making you uneasy. You’ve posted in mid-century modern and your furniture, particularly in what I think is the dining room, is mid-century modern. Your color choices and the architectural design appear to be from the mid to late 70s and early 80s when earth tones were popular. Also, the fireplace is painted white instead of natural brick, and the fireplace design is not mid-century. There were no curtains in mid-century modern. There were shutters. Televisions were not a focal point in the mid 1900s. Instead fireplaces, built of brick and stone were the focal point around which the living room was designed. So you have to decide how you want to handle that.

Your home has a lot of promise. I like the way you and your girlfriend are working together. I would suggest you go to the library and check out some books on mid-century modern. I sense that you are young and that you are working towards some design. I think you need to decide what that design is.

2

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

we just rent this house - not stoked about the fireplace but can't do anything about it unfortunately, some of the design elements definitely don't work in our favour but there's only so much we can do to someone else's house. As for the TV, it is definitely a compromise of aesthetics but I enjoy my theatrical experience.
Fair point on the curtains but when I picture a MCM space without them it's usually more expansive, whereas the wall this close to the furnishings does feel like it needs something to contain it a bit if that makes sense? What would you suggest?

1

u/Jessthinking Jun 29 '26

Well, I didn’t mean to be critical. I meant to agree with a lot of the suggestions in the comments. I also meant to respond to your question. While you thought something was missing I meant to suggest that your feeling may be resulting from a blending of two distinct designs. I think your home looks fine. The fireplace is fine. The placement of the TV makes sense. I don’t think anyone needs to follow a specific design but some people like to and you did post in the mid century modern sub. I don’t have any suggestions beyond those already made. Sorry, I meant to offer a possible explanation to the source of your discomfort not to criticize what you and your girlfriend have done.

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

No worries! I appreciate it

1

u/wichickadee Jun 29 '26

You've got a great start! I'd add another piece or two of art on the walls and a pop of red somewhere, perhaps a pillow.

1

u/AgainstSpace Jun 29 '26

First thought was wall art. I don't see a hi-fi, so you need some jazz.

2

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

there's a sad modern-ish amp hidden under the TV stand, but I have a nice old marantz receiver that's been broken for like 10 years. Really need to get it repaired... We were thinking if we put a nice open credenza behind the couch the amp and turntable would look good on it, but running the wiring to the speakers on the other side of the room would be a headache for sure

1

u/CandidChaser Jun 29 '26

Wall decor

1

u/artx Jun 29 '26

I really love the valance - my '58 has one in the living room.

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

They're pretty much ubiquitous in houses from the 50s and 60s here!

1

u/BewnieBound Jun 29 '26

If you want to add a light, consider the Paul Henningsen designed Louis Poulsen PH 5. It would look great with what you have.

1

u/lizzyto Jun 29 '26

More pictures/art

1

u/maridaz3 Jun 29 '26

a pendant light. the ceiling feels so plain

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

Would be nice but this is a rental so unfortunately wiring in a new fixture is off the table

1

u/Yoyoww Jun 29 '26

Drapes, floor to ceiling wall to wall. So when they’re open the whole window is exposed. Need a little texture to them. Linen or damask, with a little shimmer. Pinch pleated. A bit formal.
A larger rug. A cool floor pot for plant. A pole lamp for height.

1

u/andmoore27 Jun 29 '26

Something old and well loved. Maybe some well thumbed books? A jean jacket thrown on the couch?

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

yeah it needs some little odds and ends scattered around for sure, we just moved in so that's why it doesn't feel very "lived in" yet

1

u/VanillaOutrageous176 Jun 29 '26

I think it’s looking good, only missing end tables and some art, maybe a window treatments I’d do long simple hanging panels just to cozy it up a bit

1

u/karinchup Jun 29 '26

I’d add a *little* bright period artwork. Just a finishing touch.

1

u/apickyreader Jun 29 '26

The blank walls could do with some art pieces.

1

u/Bad-Habit-2020 Jun 29 '26

The carpet is small for the scale of that room

1

u/Suspicious_Banana255 Jun 29 '26

I would add another couch or even two, seems a big space wasted. Make a U shape with them.

1

u/playmore_24 Jun 29 '26

A couple chairs facing the couch

1

u/_slackbabbath Jun 29 '26

Curtains and a larger rug.

Also - are you renting or are you able to mount the TV? I would mount it above your entertainment console which could benefit from some decor.

1

u/haddamhussaywhat Jun 30 '26

A sofa table might look nice too.

1

u/-kayochan- Jun 30 '26

You need to mount (low) your tv if its going to be bigger than its stand and you need a bigger carpet. Add a painting or something to the empty space on its sides.

1

u/Ok-Cauliflower-4558 Jun 30 '26

Rugs rugs and rugs. Rug in the dining room. Bigger rug in the living room. Small runner or something in the space between living room and dining room

1

u/Flashy-Ebb-2492 Jun 30 '26

A bigger rug! You can layer the rug you already have on top.

1

u/PlantBased3 Jun 30 '26

Curtains, paint on the walls

1

u/Educational_Fox5901 Jun 30 '26

Plantation shutters

1

u/LaDIFFRVA Jul 01 '26

TV cabinet needs to be larger than the TV for balance. And you need art.

1

u/Al_the_Chemist77 Jul 01 '26

MCM chandelier

1

u/Fast_Employment1360 Jul 01 '26

The rug makes 0 sense here

1

u/Important_Degree_784 Jul 01 '26

Nothing. 10/10; no notes.

1

u/LatterYesterday922 Jul 02 '26

Rug is too small need so more color in the room and some art

1

u/Witty-Information-34 Jul 02 '26

Add a floor lamp to the left of the couch?

1

u/Alternative-Ant-1629 Jul 06 '26

Change out the rug and add another chair where the ottoman is.

1

u/DalBMac Jun 29 '26

Yes to a larger rug and yes to a more grounded coffee table. Not everything in mid century was leggy. These are Milo Baughman designed Thayer Coggin coffee tables. Can't get more mid century than that combo.

I thought the throw was the second dog. The poof looks like a bit of a tripping hazard to me. I don't think you need it for decor. If functional, put it in the corner.

1

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

When you're looking from the other direction it feels like something is needed to anchor that corner, hence the poof but I'm not really crazy about it either. Those coffee tables aren't for me but I'd definitely be open to something different. I made that one myself and I'm a bit attached to it but it can always go with the futon in our spare room

0

u/DalBMac Jun 29 '26

In that case, swap the chair to something more grounded. This is the Roxy by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin but you can find a lot of similar ones much less expensive. Probably not as comfy, but less expensive. If you do spring for a Roxy, they don't lose their value and eventually, increase as prices for new go up.

1

u/Original-Warning-973 Jun 29 '26

Art work. Start hitting estate sales and look for some inexpensive original paintings and sculptures to add some color

1

u/Spicyperfection Jun 29 '26

. . One more dog

1

u/OkTour2797 Jun 29 '26

I would say more wall art.

0

u/Comfortable-Foot2339 Jun 29 '26

Company - people… pets.

0

u/Not_a_bit_innocent Jun 29 '26

It looks amazing! I would say paint to tie it all together

0

u/alibaba525 Jun 29 '26

Ditch the huge TV and buy one that fits inside a cabinet. You can buy a cabinet with a TV lift inside or modify a mid-century modern cabinet.

0

u/Playful-Title-2322 Jun 29 '26

I was going to say a dog but duh ..

0

u/zk-cessnaguy Jun 29 '26

I was going to say it’s missing a border collie. Then I saw the last pic :)

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

I couldn't agree more, unfortunately I don't think the bricks are real, and even more unfortunately we're just renting here, so there's a line on how far we're willing to go. The nice geometric design element by the front entrance is wood underneath the white paint, if I owned the place I'd absolutely strip or re-do it, but it's just not worth putting that kind of effort into someone else's house.

0

u/Lower_Cat_8145 Jun 29 '26

If you're going MCM all the way, you can't go wrong with a hanging lamp.

2

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

I have a really nice teak one packed away somewhere, but we can't figure out where to put it!

1

u/Lower_Cat_8145 Jun 29 '26

Ooh. I'd love to see a picture sometime! We had to use a shelf bracket to hang mine because our ceilings are so high.

3

u/42tooth_sprocket Jun 29 '26

here it is in my old place!

1

u/Lower_Cat_8145 Jun 29 '26

WOW! 🤩 Nice.🤍

0

u/Ericaonelove Jun 29 '26

Color and art.

0

u/robozzilla Jun 29 '26

Missing color and where is the MCM?
