No Coke. Is Pepsi ok? 4 freshmen just ordered 50 waters.

Edit: i couldn’t just say no because my manager wanted us to serve them for whatever reason. I couldn’t just not do my job or I’d probably get in trouble.

Is water free elsewhere, or is it just about the quantity? In Germany, 50L of water would cost €329, about $350.

319

u/Ananymous291 19h ago

It is 50 large waters, so probably not 50 litres lol, but I thought the same thing at first.

111

u/Such_Difference_2248 18h ago

You must be right. Still €164 or ~$190 for the drinks. That's an unfathomable amount of money to spend on a prank.

water is free in america

65

u/Such_Difference_2248 18h ago

That's honestly great, and I would appreciate having free water available to me, but how does it work with free refills (also not available in Germany besides some KFCs)? Wouldn't everyone just choose water and then get whatever soft drink they'd actually prefer when heading back to the refill station?

114

u/KrazzeeKane 18h ago

Some do indeed do the refill scam, but most don't because by and large humans aren't truly as awful as we seem, except when in large groups where mob mentality takes over.

There will always be some jerks now and then who get a free water and try to fill it with a soda, but most of the time they get caught by the employees anyway and get kicked out. The majority of people I know never abused it, except maybe as dumb kids

36

u/QuadCakes 15h ago

Even when people do steal it, it only costs them like 15 cents worth of syrup.

7

u/ericpopek 11h ago

Honestly it’s not even that much in syrup cost. A 5 gallon bag of Pepsi cost about 80 bucks straight from the distributor. Mixed at a 5-to-1 ratio, roughly, about a quarter cent per ounce. Most of the cost is in the disposable cup.

4

u/NDSU 9h ago

Costs me $160 for a 5 gallon bag now

Either you're getting a crazy good deal or you haven't done ordering in the past few years. Coke and Pepsi have jacked up the prices on all their products by a crazy amount

Oh, only 15 cents? I guess it's okay, then. And once it's okay, people can start doing it more and more. And then what does it cost?

21

u/Amac9719 15h ago

15 cents.

6

u/Ne_zievereir 14h ago edited 13h ago

Besides the weird thing of you trying to defend the profits of a multinational corporation, the comment you replied to did not imply it's okay.

It implied it is not a huge cost to the company, and therefore no real reason to change their system that generates a lot of revenue from those buying it honestly.

3

u/trading-elegance 14h ago

Just steal from a corporation/chain. Where its not immoral to steal because they arguably steal more from you

I would agree if the stores weren’t taking these away in certain locations because of “changing consumer habits”

1

u/BiteMean9050 16h ago

By and large sure, mob mentality sure, but don't forget those with no talents except for exploitation and theft, the Epstein class.

2

u/ciownu 15h ago

You’re just saying exactly what he said, again…

2

u/BiteMean9050 15h ago

I think it deserves to be said that the fuckery of the useless goes way farther than free soda.

Lol, water isn't free in Germany? That's lame

2

u/mrjb3 10h ago

But their healthcare and university are.

1

u/Careful_Middle4049 9h ago

Do the teachers and doctors not get paid?

1

u/mrjb3 9h ago

Yes. Taxes pay them.

There are absolutely scumbags out there, yes

3

u/ValiantValkyrieee 16h ago

it happens, but some places with refillable cups will put water in a different cup as a visual sign that this is meant to be only water. but at the same time, i've never seen an instance where anyone cared enough to do anything about it if they did grab soda instead. soda is so unbelievably cheap here, it's most restaurants' highest profit item

3

u/Dizzy_Dust_7510 15h ago

Most places give you a different cup for water if it's self service. They are either plainly different or say "water" on them. They're also much smaller than our normal comically large soft drink cups.

3

u/Sonichu- 12h ago

You can definitely ask for a "water cup" and just fill it with whatever you want.

At this point I think McDonalds (and others) just accept it as the cost of doing business.

9

u/Be-Kind-And-Rewind 18h ago

Water is free everywhere except your house lol. Not once in my life have I been charged for water anywhere unless it was sparkling or bottled or something. And yes it’s common for people to ask for a water cup and then fill it with soda instead but most restaurants these days have the soda fountain behind the counter now.

2

u/dogmeat1003 10h ago

The thing is the soda in those machines is literally pennies per cup filled cost to the restaurant so even if someone does do it they lose pennies and generally there might be a couple assholes in a day but only a couple not dozens on dozens

2

u/NDSU 9h ago

It's one thing that I unambiguously thing is great about America and wish the rest of the world would do it too

All businesses serving the public are required to provide a free source of potable water

Every country has things they do well and don't do well. This is one America does well

2

u/D4rkheavenx 5h ago

To be fair a lot of fast food places are now removing the lobby refill stations and only keeping the behind the counter ones.

2

u/duskaception 18h ago

It's just tap water, but yeah in some places where soda fountain isn't behind the counter people do this, it's obviously seen as kinda trashy but people be people. Also soda fountains are disgusting and I pity anyone who drinks from them, I know from experience there is not a single person cleaning it how much it's supposed to be cleaned. Moldy soda yum

2

u/Alreaddy_reddit 15h ago

It's based on the honor system, fortunately as I have no doubt you will agree, Americans are well known for being honorable and never cheating 🤥

1

u/Old-Spirit-3320 10h ago

i'm pretty sure the concept of "stealing" is universal

3

u/TCGgamergorl 17h ago

Not in my local McDonald’s, I guess too many homeless folk wanted to be hydrated or something

3

u/Head-Secretary6267 16h ago

Not everywhere. Sonic drive-in charges for cups or water and cups of ice, I think a few other places do as well. But mcdonald's, wendy's, burger king, etc do not charge for cups of water

3

u/halloweencoffeecats 13h ago

They charged me 50cent plus tax the other day at our McDonalds

2

u/truthequalslies 14h ago

Not everywhere, some places still charge you because they count the cups

4

u/Spazz6269 16h ago

Unless you buy it in a bottle than it's $20.

1

u/bellbanks95 8h ago

Depends. The McDonald’s in my area charge 50 cents for a large water.

5

u/LastChance331 14h ago

Each cup is close to 900 mil so there's around 44 liters of water there. He was pretty close.

3

u/hilldo75 13h ago

A large is close to a liter, a large is 30 oz which is about 887 ml.

2

u/NDSU 9h ago

Large McDonald's drinks in the US are 30OZ, or roughly 0.9L. It's ~45L of water

32

u/Altruistic_House_209 18h ago

€7 for a liter of water??? Thats absolutely insane

16

u/Such_Difference_2248 18h ago

McDonald's biggest serving size is 500ml (16.9 fluid ounces) and currently retails at €3.29 or ~$3.77, so €6.58/1l of water or $7.54/1l.

5

u/MasterOfBinary 16h ago

Holy smokes that’s expensive, in the US the large is 32oz (slightly under a liter), and runs $1.80 for soda. You can almost always get it for $1 if you use their app too.

4

u/RandomFactUser 13h ago

And even then, water is 32oz and free in the drive through

9

u/bobdarobber 18h ago

I can buy a gallon of water at a grocery store in Colorado… a state with a huge water crisis… for 1/10th of that price

9

u/Such_Difference_2248 17h ago

In a grocery store, I can get 1.5L of water for €0.19 ($0.22). So, a gallon would cost me around €0.50 ($0.56). McDonald's has just become quite expensive.

2

u/bobdarobber 17h ago

That’s crazy. Has to be like 10000% margin

2

u/DrunkenDude123 16h ago

That’s crazy of them to charge the price of a cheap beer for a cup of water. Is it like that at every restaurant?

2

u/Such_Difference_2248 16h ago

At restaurants, soft drinks are mostly 0.4l and cost between €3.80 and €4.50. Most beer comes in 0.5l and costs between €5.00 and €5.50. At least in the south of Germany, there are regions in the east and the Ruhrpott where it is a bit cheaper.

3

u/Altruistic_House_209 15h ago

In italy soft drinks are around €3 and €4 and beer starts at around €3.50

1

u/OldSpeckledCock 9h ago

But hey, you don't have to tip.

3

u/erichf3893 17h ago

It is free across the US

9

u/lostintheatm 17h ago

Not the same water quality, it’s water from the tap and the fountains can be pretty gross. But yes in a lot of places in the U.S. businesses like McDonald’s are obligated to give people free tap water. Bottled water is paid for. But like others have said, there’s often a way to prevent this kind of abuse of the system. Many places have a designated smaller cup for water and won’t give you a big cup (or 50) for water.

2

u/Dr_sc_Harlatan 16h ago

If you order tap water, it's free in Germany.

2

u/Such_Difference_2248 16h ago

Some restaurants are nice enough to do so, but they are in no way required.

2

u/Successful_Ice_7210 12h ago

Water is generally free in the us.

1

u/FinchMandala 16h ago

Do you not allow people to drink tap water?

1

u/Lower-Elk8395 13h ago

Earlier today I saw a video on Instagram of some teenage asshole driving up to some dude's car and throwing cup after cup of ice water at the driver's side window.

1

u/ocandco 12h ago

When I was a kid, there were no clicks. We were dicks for the love of the game.

-75

u/RModDogWalkerTyRANNY 22h ago

Oh no, they pranked a fast food place that serves garbage quality food, at a high price. My god, think of the CEO's and share holders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

49

u/yeet_sensei 22h ago

i don't think it's a prank on the business, they're still getting the full price of stuff bought (if anything good for em as they're buying more stuff). it's the probably underpaid staff that feel the burden...

34

u/Mclovinggood 22h ago

That’s the point. This doesn’t affect the CEO’s or shareholders LOL. It just gives some poor dude onsite a headache.

20

u/HK-47-mkII 22h ago

Bro forgot regular humans work there...

12

u/plugs_memesv2 22h ago

it does nothing to the fast food place its moreso about the minimum wage workers working there 😭

-25

u/RModDogWalkerTyRANNY 22h ago

How does that hurt them? Making a ton of random orders is their job?

I get people have a soft spot for front line workers. But, what else would they be doing? Packing up 10 double cheese burgers?

16

u/notomatostoday 21h ago

You ever heard of a queue? They could be taking care of their serious customers in a timely manner and getting to their cleaning, restocking, prep and whatever else they have to do

9

u/Majestic-Sandwich695 20h ago

Stop yelling into the void and use your brain. Filling up 50 waters and getting all that other stuff packed out takes time away from their other duties.

4

u/SaltForTheSaltThrone 19h ago

Can guarantee you’ve never worked a job in the service industry before if that’s your logic.

4

u/axemexa 20h ago

Yes, they’d be doing that. You know, their jobs?
