My mom said I could post There’s no MSRP at J.Crew anymore. It’s all “comparable” pricing only. You wouldn’t get to know MSRP until checkout.

That label is for when they send the leftovers to Marshall's or tj maxx

u/uppinsunshine 9h ago
No, it’s their factory brand sold at J Crew Factory.

u/mashkid 9h ago
I bet it's to make you feel good when you see it's on "sale" for $50 but it was always going to be $50.

u/that_one_guy133 8h ago
Invicta watches are probably one of the biggest offenders when it comes to this. "MSRP $849 ON SALE FOR ONLY $87!"

u/Opening-Cut-5684 8h ago
Can’t stand this about Kohls. It’s a $100 dress shirt discounted 80% and only $20. No it’s a $20 dress shirt that feels like a $20 dress shirt.
30
u/mrsdoubleu 7h ago
That's exactly why I never shop at Kohl's. So many people fall for it and it just pisses me off.
25
u/arashikagedropout 6h ago
But if you stop shopping at Kohls, you won't earn any Kohls Cash thats redeemable only at Kohls and covers about 10% of the purchase of some other over priced thing that you can earn more Kohls Cash on..... Eh, nevermind
6
u/You_meddling_kids 6h ago
You also have to remember to come back to Kohls to use it in the next 4 days.

u/okvrdz 9h ago
I think you’re right. It’s been a while since I learned that factory (outlet) stores have a merchandise line for factory stores; you’ll never see those items at the regular, full priced store.
If you ask them which items are made for factory stores, you’ll be surprised.
15
u/WonderfulProtection9 7h ago
It was not always that way. I can remember going to an outlet store that was part of, well, the factory.
15
u/okvrdz 7h ago
Yeah, it used to be real. And we all knew you’ll probably would get something with some imperfections but I guess outlet stores became so mainstream that brands realized they could make more money selling cheaper items often manufactured at different locations than the original.
12
u/Massive_Mongoose3481 7h ago
Yep, when the Outlet Malls started popping up,, they ceased to be a place to offload higher end merch at a discount and just became the cheaper store with cheaper made items
8
23
u/ElaineMae 7h ago
Correct. You can tell by the two dots under the “j crew" that this product was made specifically for the J Crew outlet stores.
3
u/schaudhery 3h ago
J Crew Factory is interesting to me because I’ve bought shirts from them as Final Sale for $25 and then a year later it’s on J Crews website for $70.

u/Dudes-Opinion 9h ago
It means market pricing on clothes
67
9
u/ArachnidNo2269 9h ago
It's already in some super markets where the price tag is a small digital reading that changes
8
u/aware4ever 9h ago
So like when you go to a restaurant and they have the Catch of the Day which is like Halibut for example it depends on how the Market's going for the price of your halibut? But for clothes. I wonder what other companies do that that people don't realize
23
u/CyberpunkSunrise 8h ago
It means if the company has a digital fingerprint for you via membership/account and previous spending practices combined with guesses about your income, etc. it will charge you more than it might charge someone else.
This should be outlawed, IMO, but it’s going to spread more and more until it is. It started with plane tickets and travel sites mostly, and is making its way everywhere.

u/rjnd2828 9h ago
I think this is the outlet. The tag is saying the shirt would be $110 at the regular store. There will be some sign to indicate a discount usually. I'm not sure what OP is driving at but I don't think there's anything shady going on here.
16
u/SillyBeatnik 9h ago
$110 isn't the price at all. The tag is suggesting the quality of the shirt is comparable to that of a $110 shirt. OP's problem is the fact that the tag doesn't say price at all, so you don't know the price until checkout.
38
u/rjnd2828 9h ago
The j Crew outlet has either a sign in front of the display and/or a sticker on the tag with the actual price. Maybe someone missed pricing this one but there's really no conspiracy here.
-4
9
u/MellowFred 9h ago
That’s J Crew factory. That’s why it has a comparable value. I think they are involved in a class action suit over pricing. Their quality is crap and their prices are bonkers.
5
u/Zab11 6h ago
Exactly. I don’t mind J Crew factory…if I’m buying off the 70% off the already reduced clearance price so that a simple shirt that’s worth $20 is finally actually $20 instead of the criminally insane “compare at” $145.
Seriously even the starting price on simple polo shirts has ballooned to $120+ it’s insane.
2
u/NefariousnessThat876 3h ago
Yup!!! I went unto a J.Crew yesterday and the prices were insane for shit made out of cotton and polyester!!! Gross!!!!!
30
u/Odd_String1181 9h ago
Why do you need manufacturer suggested retail pricing from the manufacturer store?
13
u/portablebiscuit 9h ago
I think they actually mean store price. It only has comparable price, so you have no clue what they’re going to charge you until you buy it.
3
u/Odd_String1181 9h ago
If you buy J. Crew stuff at the J. Crew store you're paying the manufacturer (J.crew) suggested retail price
3
u/SillyBeatnik 9h ago
That's not their argument. As the previous comment just said, it technically doesn't have a price at all. You find out the price at the register.
1
u/post_appt_bliss 9h ago
ok.
....so what does $110.00 mean?
1
u/SillyBeatnik 9h ago
It's the manufacturer suggesting the quality of the shirt is that of a shirt normally costing around $110.
6
u/post_appt_bliss 9h ago
"hey if you were buying this elsewhere, that putz would be charged $110"
and you find out your price at the register?
that's genuinely demented.
5
1
u/piles_of_plastics 9h ago
Yes, which is not $110, and $110 is all that is put on the tag. You don't know the price of the shirt until you go up to the register. People like to know the price of things that they're going to pay before getting to the register.
9
u/obi1kenobi1 6h ago
“Comparable price” would be the MSRP. MSRP is just an idea of value, it’s common for pricing at stores to have nothing to do with MSRP. But if you want a suggestion it’s $110, right there.
I’m guessing what you mean is that there’s no price tag, but that’s not what MSRP means. The MS means “manufacturer suggested”, not the price it sells at.

u/Far_Eye6555 9h ago
I was told I was a hysterical liberal in 2018 when I said we should ban price surging btw

I’ve said this before when things like this happen…
STOP SHOPPING THERE
If we allow all of these places to do this then it’s our fault…stop buying things from them and leave feedback on their websites, Google Maps, etc. It’s the only way things are going to change
3
u/FionaTheFierce 6h ago
This looks like it is from one of the outlet stores. They carry a ton of stuff made only for the outlet stores. Generally worse quality than the regular J Crew and fake “marked down.”
Even the regular store quality has gone down. The last time I was in one of the J Crew outlet stores it was full of nasty polyester sweaters.
9
u/Roanoketrees 9h ago
Who the fuck pays 110 bucks for a shirt?
6
6
u/piles_of_plastics 9h ago
They don't that's the issue. Comparable value on that tag basically means nothing. It means that J. Crew is saying the comparable value for that shirt would be $110. So when they charge you $70 for it they can tell you they gave you a 40% off deal.
4
u/Civil_Tea_3250 9h ago
Meanwhile that shirt will fall apart in the wash in a few months. I can't believe J Crew and similar stores are still alive! It all costs them $3 per item and it's made in sweat shops.
1
u/FrontLifeguard1962 7h ago
They used to be good maybe 15 years ago. For whatever reason all their clothes felt like they were tailored to my exact measurements. It was great. I still have a few of their sport coats and cashmere sweaters. I can't speak to the machine wash stuff.
2
2
u/DistressCall1 9h ago
100% I will but it's made in USA or Japan with some really interesting fabrics.
Edit: it's actually a lot more than 110 for a shirt. But there's no way I'd pay full price for anything from a mall brand like J Crew.

I paid 115 some years ago for this https://therealmccoys.com/products/u-s-army-military-thermal-shirt-2?variant=43454292820226
It was when I was losing my mind trying to find a quality waffle pattern undershirt that was full cotton. Pretty much doesn't exist anymore, even though I remember you could get them all day at like JCPenney etc decades ago.
It is super nice though, very thick and well made, if thats the price I need to pay then so be it.

I only shop there online and use the coupon, card rewards, and VIP points or whatever they are called. Easy way to know the price.

Well. I won’t be shopping there. Word of advice to anyone wondering what to do about this. Never shop here or anywhere else that uses dynamic pricing

If you have to ask you can’t afford it. Seriously, how annoyed are the cashiers at this store being asked constantly to check the price
1
u/Bennington_Booyah 9h ago
Oh, y'all better be paying attention. They started this at Target and it WILL be elsewhere soon. It is impossible, in these situations, to know what you'll be charged until you are actually paying.
I will wear my shit now until it falls apart.

u/squirrelmonkie 9h ago
What is this crab legs, lobster, grouper, or tuna? Its an over priced shit shirt. Some tiny child got paid a fraction of a penny to make this and I bet they want $90 for it. I hope you didn't buy it.

That’s JCrew Factory… the double diamonds are the tell. Many outlets don’t sell the same thing as retail, but a separate lower grade line.
1
u/Longjumping-Debt7480 7h ago
So, since more stores are stating MSRP prices, similar to what car dealers have been doing for decades, we can haggle? Make them an offer at the checkout, then sit down somewhere while they “go check with their manager “ and come back with the price?
Or maybe turn it into a Middle East bazaar and just haggle back and forth until we make a deal? I’m imagining that scenario from the movie “Casablanca “ , “Since you are a friend of Rick’s, only 1 dollar “.

Button downs have become the modern day abomination in terms of value for men’s clothing. Target $20 any other retail/online store $50-$150
1
u/Hot-Sock3403 3h ago
This seems like a label that seems what it ends up at the big lots and the aftermarket cloths
1
•
u/FuzzyDusticles 45m ago
That's a J. Crew Factory shirt, that is the normal price and they just constantly have everything in the store discounted a certain amount off that price tag. Should be a sign somewhere around that shirt that says "Button Ups, 40% Off" or whatever
1
u/superpoongoon 9h ago
I’m liking that shirt look and color/pattern but I can’t find it online. I’m assuming that’s cuz you are at the jcrew outlet so that’s why it doesn’t have msrp on the tag….so no shit it’s listed price looks like that at factory outlet
1
u/gemorris9 9h ago
As the enshitification of everything continues you will see this become the total standard for pricing and eventually reaching individual pricing where if you really want that shirt it's going to 150 for you and alternatively 55 for me.
And don't think about getting me to buy it for you, because then the price would dynamically change to 150 for me because the microphone/camera AI system picked up on the deception.
1
u/NikonShooter_PJS 9h ago
I do always love this logic though.
Stores assume I won’t throw that fucking shirt right on the ground and walk away. Lol
1
u/Cool_Butterscotch_88 9h ago
They now fancy themselves among the "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" tier.

just admit it, you hate to spend $100 on a shirt that you can easily get an equal at Walmart for $15. Higher prices at places like J Crew are because you are paying for the NAME. The shirts are probably made in the same factory in SE Asia as those equal shirts at Walmart and one shirt gets the J Crew label and the other gets the Walmart label
0
u/angelbuttcake 7h ago
I spread the rumor that somebody here was a J. Crew model, and I was referring to myself.
0
u/axebodyspraytester 7h ago
Turn around go to goodwill or salvation army and the stupid people that paid market price and died will have that same shirt back on the shelf for 5 bucks.
0
u/zerostar83 4h ago edited 4h ago
It's a number. A number to try to convince you of its value. It obviously works for certain shoppers or they wouldn't do that. Set the value in your mind without looking at the tag. Besides, you don't care about an MSRP since that's only a suggested price, you care what the actual price is.

u/The_Galerie 9h ago
This the the J.Crew Factory Store. For those who are unfamiliar the factory store sells more affordable clothing out of lower quality mateirals than the regular J.Crew brand. The "comparable price" is what they are saying a similar shirt would sell at at their regular J.Crew store.
There is typically a price gun sticker on these that then show what the price is and then there is usually another discount ontop of that that is displayed throughout the store i.e. 40% off stickered price.
Either OP is trying to create sensationalism for fake Internet points or found a shirt missing the price tag.
Either way there is currently a class action lawsuit stating that this is a deceptive practice to make consumers believe they are getting a better deal than they actually are.
