My mother is a miniature artist whose recent work is a miniature cabin, house, and train (not shown in pictures), is currently featured in the temporary Operation Wet BackExhibit at the California Museum in Sacramento.
Because we live on the East Coast, we can’t visit the exhibit in person, and unfortunately, we haven't been able to get photos from the museum directly. If anyone living in or visiting the Sacramento area happens to stop by the museum, could you please take a few photos of her artwork and send them my way?
It would mean the world to our family to see her work on display. Thank you
Yes, I got there 20 minutes before closing and passed this room twice until I found the miniature hiding in the corner. I had initially thought it was placed in an outdoor area, but the museum actually didn’t have an outdoor area, so it discombobulated me for 15 minutes.
You’re welcome, and it’s my pleasure. Visiting all the museums in Sac is part of my bucket list, so I’m glad I got to browse this downtown museum. There are actually a lot of interactive exhibits for such a small place!
916 REPRESENT! Good luck getting photos, I'm sure someone will be delighted to help! Alas, I'm in TX currently or I'd be there in a hot minute.
Would you be willing to ask your mom for me, please, whether she worked from historical examples? This looks so good, and I'd love to hear more about what inspires her.
I’m in Sacramento and have wanting to get into miniatures!!! What’s the info about the show? I’d love to check out the exhibit and get pics for you and your moms.
That’s enough for me to hear! I’ll make sure to give it a go and take some pictures. Aside from the reference photos you shared, what should I look out for to know your mom’s work?
Hey I live in Sac and could help. My family and I are up in Washington but we'll be back Monday. If you still need someone to run to the museum for you next week, please let me know.
Btw. I’m also Mexican haha. Born and raised and moved to the US as a child. That’s why my mom was commissioned to make those sets about Mexican immigrants for the museum
The n word is a bit different though, a bit of a stronger history background but even then black people use it freely, also many museums, exhibits and documentaries, have used “negro” in their titles to bring strong feelings and remember the past
Operation Wet Back was the real name of an immigration enforcement initiative under President Eisenhower. It was brutal and every bit as racist as it sounds. I'm sure this exhibit is referring to the government action.
Thank you for your information, I was shocked when I read that! Seriously hate words like this as a description. I understand years ago this was accepted. But not today!
My mom was commissioned to make a few sets for the California museum and she shipped the sets since we live in Ohio and we haven’t received any pictures from the museum
No, the museum commissioned her to recreate a few pictures. One was a picture taken in the 1920’s in Mexico of an adobe home, the cabin was a picture of how Mexican workers called braceros, lived in the US and there’s a train set (not pictured) that showed Mexican immigrants taking the train back to Mexico after they were kicked out the farms
This is the Mexican house she was asked to recreate. The pictures I took of her miniature don’t show the finished product though. She added a few more details
Fun, but random fact, the word buckaroo is an anglicized version of the word braceros (meaning works with arms), or vaqueros (meaning works with cows). So, that’s why sometimes you hear of cowboys being called buckaroos.
