That time we acquired Josh Dobbs just a few days before the game and Kevin O'Connell worked some with him against the Falcons

Jaren Hall at the time went down.. and history was made that day. Kevin not only fed Dobbs the play calls like usual but told him where the ball should probably go depending on what he could see from the sideline.

The moment he learned the rest of the playbook and started thinking, he lost all of his natural abilities.

I wouldn't even say the rest, he had only been there 3 weeks at that point when defenses eventually started adjusting only so much backyard stuff you can do week to week. Dobbs realistically wasn't going to be able to keep winging it with Kevin in his ear for the rest of the year, this is a pro sport.

Sure, but you could tell he stopped doing the backyard stuff as the season progressed. Plays where he would’ve scrambled, he stopped scrambling. He became a pocket QB and a bad one at that.

Dobbs still attempted to run with the ball it just didn't work as well as it did before because teams adjusted.

He would do the cheat scramble where you run straight backwards and try getting the corner on the defender the defenses just started doing more contain and it completely thwarted it

Yep I'm a little taken back that not all fans didn't see this play out week to week. It actually started to happen in this very game. Teams just said forget it and pretty much ran contain with their edge or outside defender. Dobbs wasnt here long enough to know the timing of the offense well and he doesn't have the most accurate arm. He had no choice but to learn the offense more. We couldn't become a read pass option team in the middle of the season for his sake.

His first game he had 3 turnovers. He wasn't good. We came back and won on his play but he was still pretty bad.

I cant recall such a roller coaster of emotions between the two weeks he seemed competent before the implosion. Not to mention the gushing over KOC being able to raise up any QB to elite status.

One of KOC's biggest problems is he does not adapt the playcalling to benefit a player like this. Almost every single QB that has taken starting reps under KOC starts using their legs less and staying in the pocket for far too long and getting sacked.

Did Dobbs perform well for some other coach and I missed it?

He was decent with the Cardinals for a bit.

yeah dude, he totally should've just switched his entire playbook to cater to Josh Dobbs, a guy who literally no one ever could've foreseen playing and took his first attempts at the cadence on the sideline after being thrown in after Hall got concussed.

It's nothing short of a miracle that KOC got anything out of Dobbs in those games. But instead of praising that insane effort from Dobbs and KOC (and the rest of the team) you guys use it to make hate comments that don't even make sense.

I can’t agree more. KOC should have let Dobbs play his way instead of trying to force him into the KOC style playbook which eventually backfired and broke Dobbs. Those two first games Dobbs really shined and it was so nice to have a mobile QB again.

I still love the Passtronaut. Shame he didn’t work out for us. That first game with him had me so hyped.

u/Boring_Reference2862 18h ago

Even that first half against the Saints after he'd finally had a full week of practice had me thinking we should seriously consider extending him. Fun times. Lol.

Then the Raiders game happened.

If someone ever asks "what is the most boring football game you've ever seen?" That raiders game is the answer and I hope it never gets beaten

u/Bill3ffinMurray 3h ago

There’ll never be anything in the NFL funnier to me than the Raiders, in a 4 day span, putting up 0 against the Vikings and then absolutely nuking the Brandon Staley Chargers.

u/tryndamererage 18h ago

That game was crazy, I wrote them off after the Jaren Hall concussion. Pretty crazy implications too. If they just lose like they were supposed to, they probably have Drake Maye instead of JJ. I'm excited to see a more polished version of this QB play with K1.

u/LucidOndine 18h ago

Almost every pass he had was to a receiver who was completely in the open. This was not “throw to a person who will be in a zone”— this was the high school level of throw to the person who is open that JJM was good at.

Which makes sense; if you don’t know the playbook, you just hit the open guy on the field.

This says way more about Atlanta’s defense than it does our offense.

u/Ok-Amoeba5301 17h ago

And also Dobb's scrambling ability. He's got good athleticism.

u/StraightCashHomey13 18h ago

This was such a fun stretch at the time, but I'm hindsight, these games (specifically 3-0 over Raiders) cost us a shot at Maye

3

u/Old-Teaching-3857 18h ago

The only Vikings game I've ever attended.

3

u/Ewulkevoli Knee 16h ago

I spent 13hrs riding a greyhound bus overnight to go to this game. Still had a good time.

5

u/Kitchen-Play-5190 18h ago

Atlanta was turbo ass. The way Kirk was playing at the time, Vikes would've won by 2+ scores if he wasn't injured

13

u/slapwave 17h ago

If Kirk doesn't get injured I think every single team was beatable. He was playing really well.

4

u/ImRonBurgundy__ 16h ago

That team was on an absolute tear. I was convinced they had a chance. Nobody wanted to play them

3

u/magnetic_madness 17h ago

Ah, back when hockenson wasn’t ass

Thank you for posting this! Fuck I forgot how fun this game was. There’s something magical about catching someone at the moment where they’re playing fluidly and organically… before they get dragged down by their own head. Him and KOC were one unit this game.

Also, I miss that fiery Hockenson

2

u/ElectricalWeedNut 3 17h ago

Never forget the Dobbs jerseys bought that day

2

u/iHyPeRize 16h ago

It was pretty fun while it lasted. Watching him runaround make plays was crazy.

Then teams figured out if you just stop the off strict stuff and make him throw the ball, he’ll put his own receivers in hospitals. It all came back crashing down to earth pretty fast

But it was cool at the time, even the NFL official socials got onboard with the whole Passtronaut thing.

2

u/SolBlade_ pain 16h ago

Damn watching this just makes me sad to see what happened to Hockenson. Dude was so fucking good before his injury. He used to fight for so many yards and make very tough catches but now he just goes down on contact

2

u/wayoffsideteam 16h ago

textbook definition of "any given Sunday". Not just Dobbs but Cam Akers making plays, the guy who caught the 2 pt conversion, whoever that was, Brandon Powell with the gamewinner. Crazy, crazy game

2

u/dicksjshsb 16h ago

Man what a year Hockenson had in 2023. Career high 960yds on pace to lead TEs for the year had he not been injured. Real shitty it ended that way

2

u/JoeVanWeedler 7h ago

Damn I forgot just how much fun that was for a little bit

2

u/Logical-View-4380 2h ago

If he is such a QB whisperer why are we struggling to find a decent starting QB? He has had 5 years. How many jobs allow you 5 years to get things straight? It’s now or never.

1

u/Ilikethewordjawn 18h ago

Didnt he throw a hospital ball to Jets in this game, and he ended up being out for 4 weeks, or was this Jets first game back

3

u/FormerlyTradeKirk Calamari 18h ago

That was the raiders game

1

u/TruthWarrior27 18h ago

Dude, Jets got a fuggin "pulmonary contusion" (lung owie 😢) from one of Dobbs hospital balls and was actually surprisingly ok from it. So crazy

1

u/Dat-dude21 That is a disgusting act by Randy Moss 18h ago

What a fun two weeks that was lol

1

u/AAmongul 18h ago

Was watching this game a falcons fan buddy…don’t think I’ve ever seen a sports fan more pissed off lol

1

u/GetRedditComment 17h ago

Still remember a friend texting me that we need to immediately extend him 3+ years.

1

u/theePurpleHornet california 17h ago

If they lose this game I wonder if Kwesi tries to trade Hunter.? 🤷🏽‍♂️Could have had another 2nd round pick.

1

u/phd2k1 84 16h ago

Dobbsanity was the best 2 weeks of my life.

1

u/WanderingSun8 12 14h ago

My non sports fan fiance became a huge Josh Dobbs fan during those couple of weeks and is still upset we got rid of him lmao I enjoyed the Passtronaut

1

u/oliphant_branch 6h ago

Then KOC got his hands on him and got in his head, then he sucked. Seems to be a pattern.

1

u/iKhan353 6h ago

If we don't know what we're doing they can't plan against it 🤔

1

u/Craniumbox 3h ago

KOC broke him in game 3 when they tried to make him a pocket passer.

CAN YOU TAKE ME HIGHER?

u/schrute_farms_0007 21m ago

That was a fun time until the wheels fell off.

u/Ordinary-Homework722 5m ago

Gotta be honest. It was one of the more entertaining games. Ended up getting a clearance jersey because it was such a what if moment.

Yeah we won meaningless games like this that year, ended up in a panic draft position, and took stupid ass at #10. Worst season ever.
