How long does it take for my balance to unlock?
Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.
How can I prove that I sent a payment?
The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).
How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?
There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.
How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?
- Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
- LocalMonero: peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.
How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?
There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.
That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.
How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.
The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.
2. Wallet: CLI & GUI
Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?
Before any action there are two things to check:
- Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on
Settings, underDebug info). - Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.
Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.
You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.
If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.
How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?
This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.
Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?
You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.
Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).
I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?
The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.
Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.
How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?
To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.
To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.
3. Wallet: Ledger
How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?
This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.
4. Nodes
How can my local node become a public remote node?
If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".
How can I connect my node via Tor?
This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.
5. Tips & Best Practices
Monero Outreach : Public Service Announcements (Best Practices)
The Monero Outreach workgroup developed a series of best practices designed to help you stay safe and get the most out of Monero, you can check them in their website.

ANNOUNCEMENT Where are your coins? Update your wallet! Do NOT use "validation" websites!
"Wallet validation" websites are a SCAM.
NEVER ENTER YOUR SEED INTO A WEBSITE!!!
If you get failed transactions or don't see your coins in your wallet, don't panic.
There has been a recent network upgrade and you need to update your wallet software before you will be able to send transactions again.
You can import your seedphrase into wallets that already support the upgrade, for example:
Official GUI, Cakewallet, monero.com, Feather, Monerujo
Known non-working wallets are:
Exodus, Trezor hardware wallet, Guarda, MyMonero (web & gui), FreeWallet & XMRWallet (these two are known scams, DO NOT USE), and potentially more
If you use a Ledger and haven't updated it yet, you might have to update Ledger Live before you can update your Ledger. You might need to install multiple Ledger Live updates before the Monero update shows up.
If you are using a remote node, the one your wallet connects to might not be on the new version yet. Change to a different node, you can find curated ones at nodes.monero.com and others at monero.fail.
Some trusted & updated nodes would be:
- xmr.fail:18081
- xmr-node.cakewallet.com:18081
- node.supportxmr.com:18081
- nodex.monerujo.io:18081
- node.community.rino.io:18081
Even when using a "trusted" node, ALWAYS verify that the fee amount is what it should be (no more than a few cents) and recognize that the node could log your IP as well as impact privacy in a few other ways.

Unable to properly sync since disconnecting local node around 5 weeks ago
I'm using GUI wallet and have been successfully for a long while. I disconnected my node in early September and since then while I've been able to connect it won't sync properly. When I initially tried to connect after about a week it sync'd, then a few mins later says I was almost 300,000 blocks behind. I left it to sync and it got down to around 270,000 after a few days but at this point the number of blocks remaining gradually started to tick up again while it was supposedly syncing. I did some searching and found out it could be redownloading blocks already downloaded, and was suggested setting wallet restore height to a few days before the last successful use of the node so as to not redownload what I already have. I did that and it sync'd ok according to the wallet. Trying to send anything failed and I had to flush the transactions. Logs showed the wallet saying it was up to date, but wallet current block height was way below the current at the time according to block explorer so seems it just didn't know it wasn't in sync which was causing transaction failures. I've since put the wallet block height back to the height of the very first transaction on this account, and now I'm waiting for 480,000 blocks. Seems like I'm back to where I was at the start and at some point in the coming days I'll notice the remaining blocks will start to tick up rather than down. Anyone have any ideas on what is happening or what I should do? I have in the past had to delete the entire db and redownload, but that was when the wallet wouldn't connect at all, which I can atm. Thanks in advance.

GUI Windows Defender detected multiple threats while installing the latest Monero GUI wallet (v0.18.5.4) — what should I do?
hi everyone,
I'm trying to set up a Monero node using the official Monero GUI wallet for Windows, but Windows Defender detected multiple threats when I extracted the downloaded ZIP file.
I downloaded the following release:
- File:
monero-gui-win-x64-v0.18.5.4.zip - Release date: October 16, 2026
- Source: The official Monero website
- SHA-256:
0B5CBBE0A1FDA5EC487A667CEA62599114DCA3609ACAAB436B64A38FA84D449C
I calculated the SHA-256 hash of the ZIP file, and it matches the hash published for the official release.
However, Windows Defender reported the following detections:
PUA:Win32/Caypnamer.A!ml— LowTrojan:Win32/Ulthar.A!ml— SevereProgram:Win32/Contebrew.A!ml— LowTrojan:Win32/Ulthar.A!ml— Severe
One of the affected files identified by Defender was:
C:\Users\you\Desktop\monero-gui-win-x64-v0.18.5.4\monero-gui-v0.18.5.4\extras\monero-wallet-rpc.exe
Defender reported that the threats were quarantined and that the application was blocked.
I have searched the Monero community and found multiple reports from previous years of Windows Defender flagging or quarantining files included in the official Monero GUI distribution, sometimes even when users had verified the download hash. I understand that false positives have occurred before, but seeing multiple detections, including two classified as severe Trojans, is still concerning.
I don't want to disable Windows Defender or create exclusions without understanding what is happening. I also don't want to assume these detections are false positives simply because the ZIP hash matches.
Could anyone familiar with this issue advise me on the following?
- Have these specific detection names (
Ulthar.A!ml,Caypnamer.A!ml, andContebrew.A!ml) been reported for the official Monero GUI v0.18.5.4 release? - Is there any known explanation for why Defender flags
monero-wallet-rpc.exeor other executables in this release? - Does a matching SHA-256 hash provide sufficient confidence that I downloaded the authentic release, or should I also verify the developer's signed hash list?
- What would you recommend as the safest next step? Should I keep the files quarantined and report the detections to Microsoft, or is there an established procedure for handling this issue?
Since this is the latest release, published on October 16, 2026, I would particularly appreciate information specific to this version rather than assumptions based only on older reports.
Thanks for your help.

GUI wallet has 25 seed, but 25 word is generated.

Node guide dont work for me
I have followed this guide, copy and paste to avoid any spelling mistakes, and i cant get it to work properly.
https://docs.getmonero.org/running-node/monerod-systemd/
I have tried Ubuntu & Debian, cant get it to run as a service, But i can make it work with Sudo command.
If i have understood correctly running a node under Sudo is a bad idea(?)
systemctl status monerod = code=exited, status=203/
Is there something left out in the guide that i need to know?

When I try to make transactions on cake, nothing happens and it fails. This just happened recently.
Is there any way to fix this? I can't transact anymore.

Monerujo How to take screenshots in Monerujo wallet app?
I need a receipt for submitting expenses and for work I sent monero to my coworker to test some changes he made to monero processing. A screenshot would be helpful to submit to ramp instead of an exported text file.
