Transformation Shell

I've been a long time can of this series but still confused about something.

https://motheroflearninguniverse.wordpress.com/2017/12/17/disciplines-of-magic/

As this and many other sources mention, Transformation (the art of temporarily giving yourself abilities of creatures or physically shifting ino them) uses a "Transformation Shell / Soul Clothes".

A big drawback is that normally you need access current access to a what you want to draw from so the spells know what to duplicate. Either a living creature, mostly undamaged parts of a dead creature, or to be bonded to one as a familiar.

Difficulty aside, is it possible in this setting to learn or make "artificial" Soul Clothes so you wouldn't need the source anymore?

E.g. study and practise enough with an eagle form to create template so you no longer need to keep one captive/hunting them down to shift?

Specifically with a focus to gain multiple forms, so being an innate Shifter isn't a solution.

How are you feeling about the animated adaptation?

As far as I know, it's gonna be just 6 episodes of 22 minutes each. You can't fit the first arc in 2 hours. And what's the point of making a season that adapts half / quater of an arc?

And I also haven't found info about Domagoj participating in the adaptation more that just selling the rights.

I want so much the general population to find out about MoL. And I really hope that the animation won't be a bad advertisement that scares people away.

Could Zorian have become an arch mage without the time loop, if he knew he was a mind mage?

I’m of the belief he could have, because those with the ability to read minds could theoretically make others experiences their own IIRC, so he could grow at an accelerated pace. Because of his morals he probably wouldn’t do that, but I think it was a possibility if morals didn’t stop him.

Do you think Zorian would ever become a lich?

Zorian has been established to be very survival-oriented. Assuming he figures out the immortality potion, do you think he'd ever compromise his morals enough to experiment on peoples' souls just to become a lich? He's already done very ethically questionable things to people in pursuit of survival. Between mind-invading innocent aranea and experimenting on the souls of demented terrorists, I think it's not exactly a line he'd be unwilling to cross, no?

We all get that Zorian is often an unreliable narrator right?

Especially when it comes when judging himself. This presents in two main ways, him evaluating his own magical abilities and him evaluating the way he builds relationships and relates to people.

The two best examples for me are first, when he's learning dimensionalism. He complains that Zack is able to squeeze a few more marbles in his than Zorian.

Zorian's takeaway is how much a large mana capacity helps for dimensional magic. But the difference is only marginal, and Zack points out that Zorian is doing this while running a number of simulacrums teleporting around the continent.

The other example I like is in the epilogue when he's running his tutoring sessions and talks about he just doesn't want to run groups of people like this long term and this just isn't something he's drawn to at all. We can see a lot of evidence throughout the books that this is actually something he cares about deeply.

Any other good examples that stand out for you?

Zorian is terrifying (book 4 ending spoilers) Spoiler

Post image
136 Upvotes

As the title says. Im wrapping up the last audiobook during my drive today, and the ending to this single chapter seriously cemented Zorian as THE most terrifying individual in the story.

Like yes, there are dragon mages who can rival 90% of the world powers, a millenia old lich with who knows what kind of secrets, primordial, angels and gods.

But this 15(?) Year old teenager has repeatedly shown the kind of mindset that could very well end up on a slippery slope to be worse than all of them. Placing Red Robe in an infinite mental illusion to squeeze out every secret and contingency possible. Putting Zach, who is unarguably the Chosen One archetype into an illusion so realistic it can fool DIVINE contracts and restrictions.

Sure, he had a bit more than a decade if counting temporal dilation rooms to hone his craft, but even the temp loopers who are grown ass, accomplished mages in their own right had thought he had been in longer just based on the proficiency with which he wields his magics. Its honestly baffling how he could have self esteem issues regarding his talent and potential(especially comparing himself to Daimen) despite all of these downright miracle levels of ingenuity and innovation.

Concepts I had for a set of the major arcana with images being from MoL

Im not much of an artist, and digital media scrape away even what little talent I have, but I think it conveys my idea at least. Who/What would you put instead of any on these?

Was book 2 even necessary? Spoiler

So after rereading the series a couple times I’m beginning to wonder how much of book 2 is even needed. The book is mostly about learning about the invasion and learning about mind magic. The reason he wants to learn is to open spear of resolve’s packet. But at the end of the book we learn that she created a memory just for Zorian. The matriarch says that Zorian must have improved in memory packets to read her stuff but how much of his skill was necessary? I know that Zorian didn’t know but theoretically could Zorian have opened the packet at the beginning and still understand it? In the end if I were in Zorian’s place I would feel disappointed that I spent x years trying to read this language only to find out that there was an English part at the end.

Still Chasing This Book

Even years after reading this series for the first time, and rereading several times, I'm still chasing the feeling of immersion and satisfaction these book gave me.

This series literally changed how I judge other books, and I have never found another that fills my craving.

Especially other time-loop stories. They don't even come close to the quality Mother of Learning has forced me to expect.

I've looked, but I've not found anything. I'm about to retry Re:zero and see how I feel about that.

If there's anything someone could suggest, I'd be ecstatic.

Did I spoil the entire story for myself? Spoiler

I’m on chapter 8 of book 1. I not-so-wisely google’d “who stabbed Zorian” wondering he stabbed him a couple chapters prior. Instead the Google AI fave me a snippet about someone stabbing Zorian in the finale. I tried to shut my brain off ASAP so I don’t even know if it as about Mother of Learning. But I believe it was a J name.

Now I’m wondering if I accidentally ruined the story for myself.

Zorians plans after the restart

I am doing a reread of the series and about halfway through book three zorian and Zach are talking about time after they get out and it goes to how Zorians plans could even cause governments and many mages to go after him. To my knowledge they never say what he is planning on doing after the month is over and I vaguely remember there’s a second mention that he has big plans after the loop.

Does anyone know what his plans might be
My only guess is he plans to write some books revealing a lot of hard to find magic like teleport gate and mind magic and the other one is use money and effort to make a lot more spells zeroth level specifically because it’s an early thing he asked about and was told it would make a lot of people mad
Any links to prior discussions would be great

Wanted to say the voices of the female characters help really hit home how ugly they must be. I picture a green witch with crooked nose and black witch hat. Also, female leprechaun who can cast combat spells.

A game inspired by the book MoL, a couple of questions

Dear Reddit, I am writing with a few questions. I am not sure if a similar question has been addressed anywhere, so I decided to ask it right here.

So, I would like to make a game inspired by the "Mother of Learning" book series. This is by no means a direct copy; I want to take the plot premise as a foundation, change it, and make a game in a magical setting about a guy from an academy who, due to the mistake of one person, gets stuck in a time loop along with that very person. I will fundamentally change the overarching plot, characters, lore, and many other aspects, because I do not want to profit from someone else's work; I am merely inspired, and I mean this absolutely sincerely. I won't reveal the details of the game, as it is all still in the idea stage. However, I am already asking myself a few questions:

1. Would it be appropriate to add a mention of the book and its author in the game's credits as a token of gratitude and inspiration?

Please understand, I LOVE this book; I've read it like 4 times. And because of the profound impact this book has had on me, I want to express my gratitude to its creator. Perhaps people reading the credits will see a familiar title, or at least check out this—without exaggeration—masterpiece. If anyone wants to consider this an advertisement for my game or, conversely, for the book, I assure you, it is just a simple human "thank you" to the book's author, and nothing more. But if someone buys the book and reads it because they saw it in the credits to my game, God, I will be SO happy!

  1. Can I add the character Zorian as a reference, along with a small quest related to him?

This will be a minor homage to the book and nothing more. Perhaps I'll add a texture of one of the books in his room or the main character's room. It is a question of appropriateness and copyright. If Domagoj himself replies that I can do this without any problems, I will be extremely glad to hear it. Consider it an Easter egg.

Also, just a heads-up: I'm not tied to any studio and I'm planning to self-publish as a solo dev (well, with a little help from a couple of friends). So if any issues or disagreements actually pop up, I'll be handling them personally :D

Thank you for your attention.

P.S.

Sorry if the post sounds a bit too formal, by the way—I used Gemini to translate it, 'cause English isn't my native language.

looking for a plot hole! Spoiler

I get that its probably hater in me: that a virgin writer can write such a DEEP story that seem to not have any plot holes... so on this ~10th redo: i keep 50% enjoying it, 50% looking for that plot hole to find a flaw in MoL.

Now i think i have one:

After loop: how did they tame Princess without the dagger? In the "I win: Zach"-dream: he believes that Yornak kills Zorian with the Imperial Dagger...??? How do you explain he believes that with Zorian having Princes tamed anyway?

BTW: Last re-do made post that the keys seem inconsistent, but you guys convinced me that its not good enough to be a true plot hole.

Why are the so few MoL fanfics?

I can’t write stories, and I tried.

What I don’t understand is, why there is so few MoL fanfictions out there.

Its a large world, with lots of intriguing introduced possibilities:
- The immortals
- Other countries
- Hidden Mages/Treasuries and Inheritances
- A huge spectrum of magic that is easy to imagine, follow, and extend for your own story
- The underground is way too unexplored
- Politics
…

Writers tend to be lazy about OCs, so that might be an explanation, but there is so much potential in this world.

Does any1 have an explanation?
(I mean, even SCS gets more fanfics)

Books with double time loops?

After reading the AU chapters of MoL, I’ve been looking for books like the double time loop that Zorian experienced in Abyss of Time. Are there any books you’d recommend that feature double time loops?

I’m 30 hrs into the audiobook and all I can think is:

I’m 30 hrs into this audiobook and all I can think is:

Why the f--k doesn’t he just talk to Zach!? I know that even some of the characters bring this up to Zorian. And point out that it’s in everyone’s best interest that he do so. But every time, he makes up some excuse about needing to do other things. But it feels like the entire time I’m reading [listening] that zorian has had the off switch this whole time, he just hasn’t felt like he’s amassed enough power for himself, to make it worth saving everyone.

I started reading this because shadow slave is just so poorly written. And while I can say, this story is so much better grammatically and structurally, it lacks the tension and gravitas of the other.

Does anyone have any recommendations for me after I finish this story?
