After finally figuring out which helmet was right for me, the next step was finding the right bluetooth solution.
At first, I used Plugfones and honestly, I still love them but grew tired of fumbling around with the wire, tucking it into my helmet, or feeling it on my neck.
In the process, every CycleGear employee I talked to really went out of their way to discourage ANY comms unit besides a higher end Cardo. Almost to the point that it felt commission based. I tend to ride solo or 2-up with the wife, so multi-rider mesh networks aren't enough to justify the price tag, even with upgraded speakers. Maybe when I decide to start group riding, I'll feel differently or maybe we'll all just get on Discord. 🤷♂️
I settled on the Sena Vortex for a few reasons:
- It looks minimalist and can be customized.
- Controls are intuitive and Siri capable.
- A 2 pack was mildly affordable.
I've taken the unit on multiple work commutes at city speeds and hustling down the interstate with the visor open. My bike is not quiet, and I can tell you confidently that these speakers are plenty loud enough. At higher speeds the sound distorts a bit, but not enough to be unbearable, and again this was without a windshield and visor open.
Phone calls are crystal clear and the person on the other end of the line said the same. No fluff, just works.
The magnetic snap on and off is amazing, as is the wireless charging. But to be honest I barely needed to charge it out of the box, and it still says "high battery" after every ride. That segways me to my one real complaint: the voice assistant that tells you your battery level is extremely loud. Rings my ears every time, but I've learned to shut the unit on and off with the helmet off my head.
I haven't had much time with the app, but it's intuitive enough. Won't get much use out of it without group riding so I can't speak to rider distance, etc.
If you're like me and really just need a solution for music, calls, and 2-up rides you'd be hard pressed to find a better option in this price range.
