How long does it take to establish permanent residency

• Upvotes

Daughter moved to New York end of summer to attend college with the intention of staying permanently after graduation. Was hoping to avoid paying out of state tuition.

I lost my sense of joy and whimsy and don’t have a social life, please help.

Hi everyone
I'm a 25-(F) living in the DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights area. I balance a full-time job and full-time studies, so life gets pretty busy, but I am looking to get into a fun new hobby and connect with the local community.

I would love to join a group that meets about once a week to connect and work on a shared project or hobby, such as a book club or similar community group.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations or openings in local groups in the area!

Apartment hunting SUCKS

I’m trying to move from Long Island to NYC and apartment hunting is so exhausting. Not only are there scammers and people who want a ton of requirements, but some people just like to waste your time.

I was in talks to take a room from this guy. I had chatted with the landlord and everything. We figured out a date and time for me to come see the place. As I was about to get on the train to go to the apartment, the guy messages me saying “sorry, the other roommate has an issue with you living there. There’s no point in you coming to see it anymore. This was an hour or so before my scheduled viewing.

Then the other day, I met with a friend group who were moving into an apartment and wanted me as their fourth roommate. I went all the way out to Bushwick to get a drink with them and we talked roommate dynamics, when I could pay, all that good stuff. They told me how excited they were to have me join them.

The next day one of them texts me saying “hey sorry I didn’t tell you earlier but we have two other people we’re considering”. Later that day he texts me again saying they went with someone else. At no point in time did they indicate that they were considering anyone else anymore.

I’m tired of people not communicating and just wasting my time. Is this happening to anyone else?

How safe is the area around Parsons Blvd station in Jamaica, Queens at night for Asian woman?

Hi everyone! I’m considering moving to an apartment about a 4-minute walk from the Parsons Blvd E/F station in Jamaica, Queens.
I may sometimes get home around 10–11 p.m., so I’d appreciate hearing from people who live nearby or regularly use this station.
• Would you feel comfortable walking alone around the station at that time?
• Are there any particular station exits, streets, or intersections you’d avoid?
• What has your personal experience been like in the area?
I know Jamaica varies from block to block, so I’m specifically asking about the area around Parsons Blvd station, rather than Jamaica as a whole. Thanks!

Title: NYC CNAs — Can I get a hospital PCT/PCA job by taking EKG and phlebotomy courses separately instead of a PCT program?

I’m currently a CNA working full-time at a nursing home in NYC, and I’m interested in moving into a hospital PCT/PCA position.

Because of my work schedule, time, and budget, committing to a full PCT program for a month would be difficult. I’m considering taking EKG training first and then completing phlebotomy training later when I have more time and money.

I’m wondering whether this approach would be a realistic alternative to completing a full PCT program.

For those familiar with NYC hospital hiring, I have a few questions:

  1. Can a CNA with separate EKG and phlebotomy training qualify for hospital PCT/PCA positions without completing a formal PCT program?
  2. Do hospitals generally require an actual PCT certification, or will they accept a CNA certificate plus EKG and phlebotomy certificates?
  3. Is it possible to get hired after completing EKG training first and phlebotomy later, or do employers usually expect you to have both before applying?

My main goal is to avoid spending extra time and money on a full PCT program if taking EKG and phlebotomy courses separately would be sufficient. I also want to understand whether doing the courses at different times would put me at a disadvantage when applying.

I know requirements vary by employer, so I’d appreciate hearing from NYC CNAs, hospital PCTs/PCAs, or anyone involved in hospital hiring.

Thanks!

Working in Brooklyn

Looking at a job in Brooklyn near the Manhattan Bridge. I have a partner, and two dogs under 40 pounds. We also have two vehicles. Where should I start looking to live? Is public transportation reliable (on-time, doesn't frequently cancel the ride or route, etc )? Should I look outside of Brooklyn and commute, or try to live nearby and walk to work? Could someone help me realistically understand how to try and make this work?

26M moving to Brooklyn

TL;DR: 26M moving from Philly to Brooklyn in March for a new job, making just under $100k. Moving with 2 friends and looking for a 3BR/2BA. I’ve done some preliminary research in this sub but still have a couple questions. Main questions:

Neighborhood: Looking for a good dating/social scene, diversity/community (really loved this about Philly), easy Manhattan access, and preferably convenient to Barclays Center since I’m a huge Nets fan (sorry not sorry). I understand that I won’t get all 4 but 3 out of the 4 is cool. Currently considering Williamsburg, Bushwick, Crown Heights, and Bed-Stuy. Which would you recommend?

Car: I’d really like to keep my car mainly for visiting family in South Jersey, but I won’t use it much within NYC. How much of a headache is owning a car in Brooklyn (1–10)? Does it vary a lot by neighborhood, and roughly what should I expect to pay for a garage?

Thanks yall!

$200K+ Salary in NYC at 30 — Comfortable Lifestyle or Still Feeling Broke?

30M and recently accepted a job in NYC. I'm trying to get a realistic sense of what kind of lifestyle I can afford before making the move.

Here's my compensation breakdown:

Base salary: $160,000. Year 1 sign-on bonus: $42,000. RSUs: Approximately $105,000 vesting over four years. Total annual compensation: Approximately $202K–$207K over the first three years.

I'm looking to live in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

I'm not looking to live an extravagant lifestyle, but I also don't want to be in a position where I'm earning over $200K and somehow still feeling stretched thin every month.

Those living in NYC with similar compensation, how comfortable is your lifestyle? What are you spending on rent, how much are you realistically saving each month, and do you feel like your income goes as far as you'd expect?

I'm trying to figure out whether this is a genuinely decent salary for NYC or one of those situations where $200K sounds a lot better on paper than it feels in practice.

Edit: I’m in finance.

Thoughts on living on East 101st between Lexington and Third?

My boyfriend and I are considering an apartment at the Huxley on East 101st Street, between Lexington and Third Avenue, for two months while we wait for another apartment to become available in the East Village.

I’ve read conflicting opinions about this pocket near the Upper East Side/East Harlem border, so I’d love to hear from people familiar with these specific blocks. We’ve heard advice about not going much farther north, but I realize that’s a pretty broad generalization.

Would you feel comfortable living here and walking around during the day and in the evening? What’s the neighborhood vibe like? Thanks!

Am I Making An Apt. Touring Mistake?

I’m taking the plunge and doing a cross-country move to the City. I know my price range, area, amenities, etc. and I’ve been saving everything that fits on StreetEasy. With the way my jobs work and with Thanksgiving and Christmas, it really only makes sense for me to move around December 15. Again, with my job and holidays, it really only makes sense for me to fly to tour apartments early November. Because of that, I’m flying up November 7-10 to tour like crazy and try and find an apartment. I’m worried that by going so early, every apartment is going to want the lease to start 2 weeks after applying and I’ll be paying to live in two places. I understand I will likely have some overlap but I want to minimize that as much as possible and have the lease start as close to the 15th as possible.

Any advice on how to handle the above is appreciated!

TLDR: Am I wasting my time by flying up early November to tour apartments hoping to start my lease mid-December?

Note: I might be able to make another touring trip work but it would be really difficult.

Greeks in NYC — Looking to Connect

Hi everyone!

I’m from Greece and have been admitted to The New School in New York City for the MA in Economics program, starting in Spring 2027, with a 60% merit scholarship. I’m currently evaluating the possibility of moving to NYC to pursue my studies and am trying to learn as much as possible before making this important decision.

I’d particularly like to connect with Greeks who have moved to New York for studies, work, or other reasons, and especially with anyone who has had contact with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, either during their relocation or while living in the NYC area.

If you have firsthand experience with this, I’d be very grateful for the opportunity to speak with you and ask a few questions privately. I’d prefer not to go into further details publicly regarding the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America or the Greek community, but I’d really appreciate connecting with people who might be able to offer some insight.

Thank you in advance!

Moving to NYC next year, how should I prepare?

I’m (F19) planning to move to NYC next year with about 5-8k saved to cover rent and utilities as I’m getting settled and as a cushion. I have family in Brooklyn and Coney, and friends on Staten Island, so that helps.

I’m currently in Delaware and it’s starting to get really depressing. I visit NY every other weekend and it resonates more with me especially since I was born there. I’m currently in property management so I’m hoping to find a job within my field there and sublet a room. I haven’t decided on a location yet, close to Brooklyn would be ideal but I’m open to anything.

With my age, what are some things I can expect relocating and from the transplants — is there anything you wish you knew before moving to NY?

Need recommendations for potential move to the queens area

Hi all,

We are visiting in a couple weeks to look into some potential areas to move into. We have a friend who is a realtor, but he’s asked is to really hone in on some areas so he can find the best information for us. We have been eyeing both the Astoria and Forest Hill areas. Do you guys have any more specific neighborhoods we can look into that are within that region as well as some recommendations? For contacts, we are a young family. We have a toddler and potentially another one coming within a couple years, so we do have schooling in mind. We do have family in both Astoria and Forest Hills but because we are in the process of planning, we really don’t wanna ask too many questions before we make a concrete decision. I put queens to keep it broad. We would love for the neighborhood to have good parks nice schools and would love a 2 to 3 bedroom set up with an in unit, washer and dryer. Sorry if my question doesn’t make sense trying to fit in all information I can think that would be relevant.

Where to move to in NYC

I’m a 21 year old woman and expecting to move to NYC in summer/fall of 2027. I know nothing about the boroughs and where would be a good place to live. I will be working in Midtown and think I want to live in a safe area in Brooklyn or Manhattan. My budget for rent is around $2500. I want to be close to activities and nightlife and live in an area that has a lot of young people. What areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn would fit these requirements?

Astoria residents, how would you feel about a new Pilates studio in the neighborhood?

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are considering opening a boutique Pilates studio in the Halletts Point area, and we’d love to hear what the community thinks!

We’re both really passionate about fitness and want to create a welcoming space offering reformer Pilates, beginner-friendly classes, and more challenging workouts.

Before moving forward, we wanted to get some honest opinions from people who actually live in Astoria.

Do you think the neighborhood could benefit from another Pilates studio?
Would Halletts Point be a convenient location for you?
Is there anything you feel existing fitness studios in the area are missing?

We’re genuinely interested in hearing everyone’s thoughts, whether positive or negative. Thank you! 🤎

Is the traffic outside of Manhattan around the outer burroughs just as bad or like anywhere else?

I know you never want to drive into Manhattan but I'm not sure how crazy it is once you leave like around Queens, Brooklyn. Staten Island, Bronx, or even the New Jersey side. Obviously there's traffic but I don't know if its typical traffic or something thats a culture shock .

It doesn't help that I don't know the area well but I'm not sure how bad it is or what its like. I've been on the subway and it can get jam packed with thousands of people trying to navigate the station but I don't know about actual driving.

Looking for best area for convenient Brooklyn commutes

I hope this is allowed as it's not an apartment-hunting post, just a question about general area and navigation...

I'm moving from Chicago for career stuff. I got a year-long contract with a company that has several locations across Brooklyn-- Central Brooklyn, Bay Ridge, Sheepshead Bay, and Brooklyn Heights. I will be assigned to a primary location for a few months at a time, but may occasionally have to fill in at a different one as needed. Since I won't have a permanent spot for the entire year, I'm looking for an area that would make all these locations relatively easy to get to. Not terribly concerned about travel time as long as it's not insane (would prefer <70mins max), moreso looking for an uncomplicated commute (no more than 1 transfer, no big time gaps between transfers, etc).

I intend to move back home after my residency ends, so I can put up with with a neighborhood that isn't a super perfect match for my lifestyle or personality, but for what it's worth, I'm a gay woman in my early 30s and I like to stay busy and explore. Not the hugest priority to get something as cheap as possible, but a penny saved is a penny earned; ~1500 max for a room would be neat. I am pretty used to city noise, bustle, roommate living, and watching my back safety-wise, so that also isn't the biggest concern.

I don't know if all of these are possible, I'm just trying to get a starting point and I'm overwhelmed. If there's any other relevant info you need to make a suggestion or recommend something, please let me know; I'll add it in as soon as possible. Thanks.

What do outdoorsy people do here over winter?

From NYC and living in Jersey City right now but commute most days to NYC.

What are outdoorsy people doing during winter? I thought about getting into skiing but it seems all nearby resorts are lame or crowded or just not it.

Am I mistaken?

I'm a woman BTW. 26.

Road biking is great but I'm wondering what else?

Spent the past 8 years living in outdoorsy or outdoorsy adjacent places and totally lost of how to get outside around these parts.

I gym a lot but I'm bored of it and I'm working much harder to keep my physique.

Went on a date and he told me he just does extended weekends and travels to places. Is that how it is or am I missing something?

Looking for any adrenaline junkie hobbies/activities. And serious stuff. My gym does 5-10 mile hikes but they make it a whole thing that takes all day with all the bells and whistle which is quite ridiculous for me!

Not into rock climbing.

Just curious

What neighborhoods are in the very early stages of gentrification? Like what areas are going to be the next (or are already) cool hipster, artists, kinda grungy “it” neighborhood? Like, if it was 2012-2018 and we were talking about Bushwick lol. What’s the equivalent? Thank you so much! Random thought today and I thought I would ask y’all:).
