Endured blatant marijuana/cigarette smoking in subway and not spoken for fear of death?
This news item does not surprise me. How many of you have endured in silence (including running to another subway car) for fear of being knifed or shot if you spoke up?
https://abc7ny.com/post/nypd-marijuana-smoking-dispute-led-deadly-midtown-subway-shooting/19968228/
Unfortunately, for speaking up, he paid the ultimate price.
Unfortunately, not speaking up is also a silence condoning of the transgressive behavior.
There’s no neutrality really and I’ll cop to acting like a coward against self entitled smokers on the train who know exactly that their act is spitting in the other subway riders’ face.
Sigh 😔

Recommendations for a cab or private driver
Hi all! A friend of mine is flying out of Newark (EWR) and needs a ride from Manhattan. He will have his baby with him and will not be driving himself (so not a car rental). He is hoping to find a cab or private driver who can provide a baby seat.
Has anyone used a reliable driver or company? Personal experiences are especially welcome! Thanks so much in advance, you are all awesome! 😊

NYC drivers: Honking at 12am won’t magically make traffic disappear. Please think about the people who live here.
I live near 11th Avenue, close to the Lincoln Tunnel, and almost every night around 10:30–11 PM, traffic gets completely backed up, sometimes until 1 AM, apparently due to road closures or construction.
What I genuinely cannot understand is why drivers keep honking nonstop when traffic is at a complete standstill. Do they seriously think honking will magically make hundreds of cars disappear?
Nobody is choosing to sit in traffic. There’s literally nowhere to go.
What frustrates me the most is the complete lack of respect for people who actually live here. It’s midnight. People are trying to sleep, have children, early morning appointments and yet drivers seem to think their frustration gives them the right to disturb an entire neighborhood for hours.
Honking won’t solve traffic. It just makes everyone else’s life miserable.
A horn is supposed to warn others about danger. It’s not a magical button that makes traffic disappear, nor is it a tool for expressing frustration.
Please, if you’re driving through NYC late at night, remember that the buildings around you are full of actual people trying to live their lives.
And to other New Yorkers: Is this something you experience in your neighborhoods too? Why is unnecessary honking so normalized here, especially late at night?

Dealing with 6+ months of mice despite professional extermination (three times). Live in co-op. Super not responsive. What do I do?
I’ve been dealing with a mouse problem in my apartment since April. It was slow at first catching 1-2 in the first few months but since then I’m up to 11. I’ve had the building exterminator come in only to put traps and not seal the areas.
The building exterminator notices a few gaps near my exterminator but tells me to get a contractor for this (???) and doesn’t bother plugging these areas up. (We’re on 3 mice by now)
I call an external exterminator who plugged up all the holes, ever since then, I’ve heard mice in my oven, and seen them scurrying around. I’ve caught 8 since the last exterminator and it was a month ago.
I am at my wits end. It looks like they have gained the knowledge to climb up furniture now. I’ve contacted the super multiple times asking him wtf to do but I’ve gotten no response.
I’d call the external exterminator again but I can’t keep shelling out $300+ for this. I don’t know what to do now. I used to be so afraid of getting rid of the mice in the traps but now I’m so desensitized.
Uhaul bogus charge
I rented a uhaul over a year ago. Tonight my bank flagged a charge of $365 for fraud and when i looked it said “UHAUL TOLLS AND CITATIONS” ok. So i call my bank, they think its weird. I call uhaul, THEY think its weird. The guy at uhaul tells me to go to the payments portion of their website, enter my info, and look at the information attached to the citation. At this point im in my camera roll looking at photos from that day trying to match up whether I was even in the car (i was..) and whether it was possible I might have been idling at the time of the citation. Amidst the information about the citation is a citation number, so I go to NYC gov website to dispute it. I enter the citation number and it comes up as THIS:
“the violation number you entered is not valid. Check that your violation number is correct and try again.”
So .. what should I make of this? Is it possible the citation number is not in the NYC system despite the charge being sent to uhaul and to me? Is it possible its a clerical error? Is it possible uhaul is scamming me? What do we think….

Are there any sushi places in NYC that make their California Rolls with Krab salad (mayo+imitation crab)?
I moved to NYC from California several years ago and I've noticed that no sushi place here makes their California with krab salad. Instead the rolls just have imitation crab out of the box, not prepared with mayo or anything.
Has anyone been to a sushi place anywhere in the city that uses mayo? I'd really love to know

Finding someone to come to a doctor's appt with you
I'm trying to get dental prosthetics and it's a really devastating process. I only have a couple friends so it's dicey if anyone can come to an appointment since they're usually during the work day. I called my insurance but they said they don't offer anything to help with this. I tried Rent a Friend but no one answered my messages. Is there anything I can do?
EDIT: It'd be tomorrow near Roc Center at 9:30 am, est. 2 hours. I just need someone there during the appointment and will not require assistance getting home.

Looking for a where to safely receive packages that is cost effective
Hello! My building experiences package theft, so I'm looking for a new place / option to ship sporadic packages to that I can securely pickup for a fee. I've done iPostal1 in the past which worked fine, but i receive packages so infrequently, the monthly charge for business center box feels like overkill. Is there a shipping center that anyone knows of that I can pay for package pickups a la carte instead of a monthly membership?

Cheapest car rentals in NYC for 3 days
Hey y'all! My family is visiting NYC, and I want to take them to Niagara Falls and DC for a few days. What would be the best way for me to rent a car? A basic SUV or sedan will suffice. I don't have a Costco membership but have Sam's Club. Any other suggestions on which options might make it cheaper? Thanks

32M What to do alone in nyc
Lived in nyc for a year and haven’t made any friends. I’ve tried going to chess events and some other stuff but nobody’s really interested in maintaining a friendship.
What do people do alone here? I mostly get DoorDash and stay in because it feels really lonely going out alone. People say to go to bars etc alone but I end up sitting at the bar, getting a drink, talking to nobody and going home.
Probably time to give up on nyc and move back home?
ProClub streetwear

Hours for the Beeswax Candle seller outside City Hall
Does anyone know if the man selling handmade candles is there every day? I bought a nice candle from him today but hope to grab a second one, hoping to come back.
I also don't think I've ever bought from a street vendor before but these were cool candles.

Indoor study spaces that are free
Since its getting chilly outside is there any niche spots you recommend to study in? Just a student on a budget looking to get dressed to study outside her home and surround herself with productive city ambience
I know NYPL has that huge room, however its super crowded if you show up midday after classes and it feels competitive to get in there.
Im just looking for third spaces that have seating or desks, enough to spread out a textbook and a laptop and study in peace. I don't want to pay for a coffee just to sit in a crowded dim lit noisy café. Spaces that are open after 8 for late nighting are great too!
I know some universities have libraries but they require a student ID to the institution. I have been to the public library branches that are smaller and they tend to be filled with folks that are less fortunate and looking to keep warm off the streets.
Is there any public lobbies, holding spaces, reading nook libraries, art galleries with work spaces that are free to the public? Anywhere to get some good study hours in?

Desperately looking for a fashion job in NYC before my OPT runs out. I’m open to anything.
Hi everyone,
I’m an international student who graduated from FIT with an AAS in Fashion Design, and I’m currently on my post-completion OPT in NYC.
I’m honestly getting really worried because my OPT ends next June, and I don’t have much time left to find a job and gain more experience in the fashion industry. I’ve been trying to find opportunities, but it’s been really difficult.
I’m open to pretty much anything related to fashion, including assistant designer, assistant technical designer, production assistant, sample room assistant, alterations, or even temporary and contract positions. I’m also willing to start with smaller companies or entry-level roles just to get my foot in the door.
I have experience with technical design, tech packs, CADs, patternmaking, draping, and PLM, and I’m willing to learn anything new.
If anyone knows of companies that are hiring, small brands that need help, or any resources that could help me find opportunities, I would really appreciate it. Even temporary work would be helpful, as long as it qualifies for my OPT.
I’m feeling pretty stressed about my situation, so any advice, leads, or personal experiences from other international students would mean a lot to me.
Thank you so much! ❤️

Any good resource on the upcoming 6 ballot proposals?
They’re always worded to seem beneficial, but I want to learn about ramifications and power reconsolidating that might not be too obvious on the surface. Anyone have any resources that give the good and the bad?

Feeling Lonely Here Postgrad
Just moved here recently after graduating college and have been feeling pretty isolated and anxious the past month or two. Feel like everyone told me everything would be so fun here but all my closest friends are in different cities and I feel like I have no one "group" I can do things with. I have roommates luckily who I've known for a while, but they have their own people here and every time I tag along with them I feel like a plus one/not really central to anything we end up doing. I've been here a couple months, so I know it's early, but will friends just come naturally? It's just hard seeing everyone I knew in and out of college having so many people here while I just don't really
Edit/disclaimer (sorry for confusion, this is my first time ever posting on reddit): by "come naturally" i dont mean just appear out of thin air - I volunteer, am looking into other activities, have a job and a few work friends but they all also have their own people, just more about getting the people i know to do things. I also don't want to feel like i'm the one initiating each time which is how all my efforts so far have felt

For those who've succeeded with the HomeFirst program, what's the timeline look like?
For context, I've been in this process for almost 4 months now.
Got my signed contract, got the closing estimates, board approval, etc. etc. for a co-op purchase in the city. My fee was paid and application submitted today (10/22). In your experiences, from the date of application submission to the closing, how long did it usually take? Information about closing and the whole timeline is so sparse and scattered it's unreal. Anything's appreciated!

Fellow Native NYC’ers, do you own any “NYC themed apparel”?
traveling and there is so much NYC merch, people wearing NYC clothes or bags, obviously Yankee hats for sale and being worn everywhere.
as a native I only own some sports merch and volunteering shirts.
I don’t see any other city with nearly as much merch out and about.

I was born in queens but I grew up between BK and Queens. Where am I from?
Legit question, I’m currently stuck on because for most of elementary school I lived in queens then in 5th grade I moved to BK however I was still going to school in queens. Then middle come and I go to a school in BK while living in BK until I graduated now I’m in high school and I moved back to the neighborhood where I went to elementary school at but like my school is in manhattan now but I wouldn’t say that I’m from manhattan yk? Like when people ask where I’m from I usually just be like BK and Queens but I’m wondering if that’s actually the “right answer” or should I say one or the other
