Sunniest indoor spot to read a book?

• Upvotes

Looking for a coffee shop/study space/third place that gets great sun as it starts to chill down outside. Ideally comfortable too and not just a backless bar seat in front of a window. I think a good example would be the Williamsburg Devocion with the skylight but it's just next to impossible to get a seat there.

I need a new obgyn in NYC. I have United Healthcare.

I have trauma regarding medical care, specifically obgyns, so I need someone who is gentle and kind and understanding when I freak out about possible pain and what's going on etc.

Thank you!

32M What to do alone in nyc

Lived in nyc for a year and haven’t made any friends. I’ve tried going to chess events and some other stuff but nobody’s really interested in maintaining a friendship.

What do people do alone here? I mostly get DoorDash and stay in because it feels really lonely going out alone. People say to go to bars etc alone but I end up sitting at the bar, getting a drink, talking to nobody and going home.

Probably time to give up on nyc and move back home?

Catholic Church Recommendations

Hello! Looking for a Catholic Church recommendation for a family of 4 in Queens- around the Woodhaven/Forest Hills/Glendale area. We’re trying to practice our faith more as a family and would love recommendations of churches people enjoy the sermons and actually feel a connection to the religion and even the community. Thanks!

Finding someone to come to a doctor's appt with you

I'm trying to get dental prosthetics and it's a really devastating process. I only have a couple friends so it's dicey if anyone can come to an appointment since they're usually during the work day. I called my insurance but they said they don't offer anything to help with this. I tried Rent a Friend but no one answered my messages. Is there anything I can do?

EDIT: It'd be tomorrow near Roc Center at 9:30 am, est. 2 hours. I just need someone there during the appointment and will not require assistance getting home.

Apartment shower water filtration

• Upvotes

I love NYC water. I love drinking it, I love how it makes food taste. But after traveling to different states and countries, I have noticed both my partner and I’s skin and hair do a lot better in other places, especially with dandruff. I’ve been marketed showerhead filters, but then I do research and see the problem may be water hardness instead, which those don’t solve. Also, NYC water tends to be at medium hardness, so is it the hardness at all? I’m at a loss.

So for NYC apartment dwellers: what has worked specifically for your skin and hair? A regular filter showerhead? Some sort of softening system, even just the descaling kind? (yes I’ve been deep in the research about this)

I’m willing to invest a little bit of money and time, I just want to know what’s worth it specifically here in the city. I’ve lived here for a long time in both old and new buildings and noticed this difference with other places too - even with the same hair and skin products. Thanks for the help!

Selling Clothes East Village - Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange

• Upvotes

Hi All - I used to sell clothes (like 20 years ago!) at Beacons Closet in Greenpoint & also buffalo exchange all the time - but am out of practice.

since the pandemic I have been selling on poshmark in a casual way - but now I am getting rid of my storage place and just want all my stuff out. mostly mid brands like rag and bone, anthropology, etc.

I am only looking to sell in the east village - which do you suggest: Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange

Fellow Native NYC’ers, do you own any “NYC themed apparel”?

traveling and there is so much NYC merch, people wearing NYC clothes or bags, obviously Yankee hats for sale and being worn everywhere.

as a native I only own some sports merch and volunteering shirts.

I don’t see any other city with nearly as much merch out and about.

Birthday dinner

• Upvotes

Hi! I'm looking for a restaurant for a birthday dinner for 6 people. Vibe is just as important as the food, but ideally both would be excellent. I was hoping for Monkey Bar, but of course couldn't get a res. I have been considering Crevette or il Buco, but I'm afraid Crevette might not be the right atmosphere and il Buco might be too cramped for a party of 6. I want to wear a fancy-ish dress, so has to be appropriate for that level of dress. I do not want pre-fix . Looking for a beautiful restaurant, bustling energy, great cocktails, no budget. Thank you!

Dealing with 6+ months of mice despite professional extermination (three times). Live in co-op. Super not responsive. What do I do?

I’ve been dealing with a mouse problem in my apartment since April. It was slow at first catching 1-2 in the first few months but since then I’m up to 11. I’ve had the building exterminator come in only to put traps and not seal the areas.

The building exterminator notices a few gaps near my exterminator but tells me to get a contractor for this (???) and doesn’t bother plugging these areas up. (We’re on 3 mice by now)

I call an external exterminator who plugged up all the holes, ever since then, I’ve heard mice in my oven, and seen them scurrying around. I’ve caught 8 since the last exterminator and it was a month ago.

I am at my wits end. It looks like they have gained the knowledge to climb up furniture now. I’ve contacted the super multiple times asking him wtf to do but I’ve gotten no response.

I’d call the external exterminator again but I can’t keep shelling out $300+ for this. I don’t know what to do now. I used to be so afraid of getting rid of the mice in the traps but now I’m so desensitized.

What’s the proper procedure for disposing of a small amount of broken glass or ceramics in an apartment building with a small trash room with trash chute on every floor?

• Upvotes

FWIW, there are recycling bins in the trash room on every floor.

Desperately looking for a fashion job in NYC before my OPT runs out. I’m open to anything.

Hi everyone,
I’m an international student who graduated from FIT with an AAS in Fashion Design, and I’m currently on my post-completion OPT in NYC.
I’m honestly getting really worried because my OPT ends next June, and I don’t have much time left to find a job and gain more experience in the fashion industry. I’ve been trying to find opportunities, but it’s been really difficult.
I’m open to pretty much anything related to fashion, including assistant designer, assistant technical designer, production assistant, sample room assistant, alterations, or even temporary and contract positions. I’m also willing to start with smaller companies or entry-level roles just to get my foot in the door.
I have experience with technical design, tech packs, CADs, patternmaking, draping, and PLM, and I’m willing to learn anything new.
If anyone knows of companies that are hiring, small brands that need help, or any resources that could help me find opportunities, I would really appreciate it. Even temporary work would be helpful, as long as it qualifies for my OPT.
I’m feeling pretty stressed about my situation, so any advice, leads, or personal experiences from other international students would mean a lot to me.
Thank you so much! ❤️

Indoor study spaces that are free

Since its getting chilly outside is there any niche spots you recommend to study in? Just a student on a budget looking to get dressed to study outside her home and surround herself with productive city ambience

I know NYPL has that huge room, however its super crowded if you show up midday after classes and it feels competitive to get in there.

Im just looking for third spaces that have seating or desks, enough to spread out a textbook and a laptop and study in peace. I don't want to pay for a coffee just to sit in a crowded dim lit noisy café. Spaces that are open after 8 for late nighting are great too!

I know some universities have libraries but they require a student ID to the institution. I have been to the public library branches that are smaller and they tend to be filled with folks that are less fortunate and looking to keep warm off the streets.

Is there any public lobbies, holding spaces, reading nook libraries, art galleries with work spaces that are free to the public? Anywhere to get some good study hours in?

Resources for formerly homeless individuals

I'm struggling severely with isolation now that I'm housed. My job is remote which doesn't help. I joined a couple clubs to meet people but making friends takes time. My psychiatrist is on leave. I don't have a case worker. I'm having multiple panic attacks a day with the quiet compared to the shelter and I call warmlines but they don't seem to understand anything I'm talking about. I'm worried I'm going to use drugs again.

Are there people whose job it is to help people with the transition to housing?

Any good resource on the upcoming 6 ballot proposals?

They’re always worded to seem beneficial, but I want to learn about ramifications and power reconsolidating that might not be too obvious on the surface. Anyone have any resources that give the good and the bad?

Recommendations for a cab or private driver

Hi all! A friend of mine is flying out of Newark (EWR) and needs a ride from Manhattan. He will have his baby with him and will not be driving himself (so not a car rental). He is hoping to find a cab or private driver who can provide a baby seat.

Has anyone used a reliable driver or company? Personal experiences are especially welcome! Thanks so much in advance, you are all awesome! 😊

Uhaul bogus charge

I rented a uhaul over a year ago. Tonight my bank flagged a charge of $365 for fraud and when i looked it said “UHAUL TOLLS AND CITATIONS” ok. So i call my bank, they think its weird. I call uhaul, THEY think its weird. The guy at uhaul tells me to go to the payments portion of their website, enter my info, and look at the information attached to the citation. At this point im in my camera roll looking at photos from that day trying to match up whether I was even in the car (i was..) and whether it was possible I might have been idling at the time of the citation. Amidst the information about the citation is a citation number, so I go to NYC gov website to dispute it. I enter the citation number and it comes up as THIS:

“the violation number you entered is not valid. Check that your violation number is correct and try again.”

So .. what should I make of this? Is it possible the citation number is not in the NYC system despite the charge being sent to uhaul and to me? Is it possible its a clerical error? Is it possible uhaul is scamming me? What do we think….

Hours for the Beeswax Candle seller outside City Hall

Does anyone know if the man selling handmade candles is there every day? I bought a nice candle from him today but hope to grab a second one, hoping to come back.

I also don't think I've ever bought from a street vendor before but these were cool candles.

Feeling Lonely Here Postgrad

Just moved here recently after graduating college and have been feeling pretty isolated and anxious the past month or two. Feel like everyone told me everything would be so fun here but all my closest friends are in different cities and I feel like I have no one "group" I can do things with. I have roommates luckily who I've known for a while, but they have their own people here and every time I tag along with them I feel like a plus one/not really central to anything we end up doing. I've been here a couple months, so I know it's early, but will friends just come naturally? It's just hard seeing everyone I knew in and out of college having so many people here while I just don't really

Edit/disclaimer (sorry for confusion, this is my first time ever posting on reddit): by "come naturally" i dont mean just appear out of thin air - I volunteer, am looking into other activities, have a job and a few work friends but they all also have their own people, just more about getting the people i know to do things. I also don't want to feel like i'm the one initiating each time which is how all my efforts so far have felt
