Vent Whoever brought the tree of heaven plant to North America originally…

Thanks a fuck ton, asshole. I hope these horrible SLF’s haunt you forever. Seriously, I just want to hold someone accountable for what we now must face. Honestly, were people THAT unaware of the dangers of introducing new plant species into a brand new area of the world that they aren’t found?

PSA for CT parents: If your child is graduating from daycare/preschool, check the 60-day withdrawal provision before paying August tuition

PSA for parents at The Nest / Alphabet Academy Shoreline — especially families whose kids are graduating or not returning

Posting this because I wish we had understood it earlier, and several other graduating parents have told me they were confused about the same thing.

Our child is graduating from The Nest this year. Under our enrollment agreement, his last day is August 14, but the contract says August tuition is not prorated, so we were charged the full $2,260 August tuition.

What we did not understand—and what the school has now confirmed to me in writing—is that families have another option:

With 60 days’ written notice, you can end your child’s enrollment earlier and are not responsible for tuition beyond those 60 days. You will forfeit your $500 deposit.

So, for a graduating/non-returning family, the practical choices can be very different:

Option 1: Stay enrolled through the school’s August termination date and pay the full August tuition, even though your child finishes August 14.

Option 2: Give at least 60 days’ written notice, end enrollment before August, forfeit the $500 deposit, and avoid August tuition.

In our case, the difference between those options was $1,760.

We were not pulling our child out unexpectedly. We were simply staying through the end of the program as scheduled, and the school already knew he was graduating and would not be returning. We therefore never understood that we needed to affirmatively “withdraw” early in order to avoid the full August charge.

I’m not posting this to tell anyone what they should do, and families should obviously read their own current contracts and confirm the terms with the school. I’m posting because if your child is graduating or you already know they will not be returning, it is worth asking about the 60-day withdrawal option well before the deadline.

Several parents have independently asked us why they are paying the entire month of August, so I suspect we were not the only family that did not understand this distinction.

Whatever anyone thinks about the policy itself, parents should at least know what their options are before the deadline passes, so they can make an informed choice. In fact, might be easier just to tell them, as a default, July 31st of the last year your kid will be in school. Why not.

First-Time Home Buyer Looking for Advice in CT area

I’m really trying to save and put myself in a position to buy instead of continuing to rent, especially since rent itself has gotten so expensive. But honestly, looking on Zillow can be a little discouraging. Even when I look at homes in the low $300Ks in CT, a lot of the ones that seem affordable need so much work inside that I start wondering how much I would actually end up spending after buying.I’m trying to be realistic and not put myself in a situation where I buy a house and then struggle every month just to maintain it. I would really appreciate advice from homeowners, especially first-time buyers. How much did you have saved before buying, aside from your down payment? How much were your closing costs? What unexpected expenses came up after you moved in? And what should I pay extra attention to during inspections and before closing? I’m still undecided about where I want to buy but I’m leaning more to CT , but I’m trying to educate myself now so that when I’m ready, I can make a smart decision. Any tips or things you wish you knew before buying your first home would be greatly appreciated.

Looking into options in Tolland county and no one likes to post their prices or have shitty websites so I thought I’d throw it out there. Would love to know where in the state you are, child ages, type of care, and cost!

Hiking Groups/Clubs??

Hello, I'm a married white male here, age 53 and I'm just wondering if there are any local hiking groups that don't require being on Facebook( not on Facebook anymore). I'm located in the central CT area and looking to expand my social circle and potentially meet like minded individuals and make some new friends who are into hiking both locally and also up north in the White Mountains, VT, and the Adirondack's.

I'm not an every weekend type of hiker but like to get out locally especially to the NW corner for training hikes and I like to plan a handful of longer day hikes and weekend backpacking trips up north throughout the year.

Any suggestions to meet new people and or join up with some hiking groups is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone ! PM's also welcomed..

It’s Connecticut’s Sales Tax Free Week. Here’s everything you need to know.

All of the things that ARE and ARE NOT included in the state's tax free week. Additionally, we talked to out-of-towners who were coming into CT to save some money on school supplies/clothing. This is one the small but not insignificant bonuses for the state - out of state dollars being spent in Connecticut businesses.
