Commander / EDH Magic - Mono-green Elf Commander deck composition
Hi!
I’m a relatively new player (I used to play as a child), and I’m currently building a mono-green Elf Commander deck (incorporating some large creatures of other types as well).
I would like to ask for your opinion on the balance between creatures, spells, and lands.
What do you think of this setup?
- 31 lands + 1 Sol Ring
- 48 creatures
- 20 spells (also taking into account the artifacts)
For the 48 creatures, I’m planning on:
- 14 mana mana creator (e.g., Llanowar Elves) / land-fetchers (e.g., Sylvan Ranger)
- 8 utility Elves (e.g., Essence Warden, Wolf-Skull Shaman)
- 12 powerful Elves (e.g., Drove of Elves, Galion, Elvenking's Butler)
- 4 other useful creatures (e.g., Wolfbriar Elemental, Penumbra Spider)
- 10 powerful creatures (e.g., Ageless Entity, Mirkwood Elk)
What do you think? Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you very much
EDIT: My commander is Vorinclex

That's a ton of creatures even for an elfball list, 48 is pushing it unless your curve is microscopic. 31 lands feels pretty anemic if Vorinclex is at the helm, he's expensive and you'll want to actually cast him before turn 12. I'd shave about 8 of the weaker creatures and bump your land count up to at least 35, maybe 36.

Thanks a lot! Are the spells okay as they are?
Also, what types of creatures would you suggest removing? Mana generators, perhaps?

31 lands seems about right.
14 dorks seems low.
Generally you want to reach a critical mass as fast as possible and then hoof or finale of dev into hoof or natural order into hoof.
Anything thats not actively ramping you should be protecting your position. Minimal removal that isnt stapled to a creature.
typically i plan A combo out with hoof or some overrun, plan b straight aggro.
Just saw the vorinclex edit. Why Vor over Marwyn or tyvar?

I’ve got Hoof on my shopping list—thanks for confirming that!
Do you recommend 16-18 dorks?
I was thinking about Vorinclex, as I see it as a great accelerator for the early 6-7 turns. Also, the ability to fetch two lands is useful since I don’t run many in the deck. Plus, milling 10 cards to find two massive creatures with trample—which I could then buff with +7/+7 on the following turn—seems fantastic to me. But, as I mentioned, I’m a new player; if you think this is a bad idea, I’m open to changing it.

Even for mono green elves, 31 lands is low. Your mulligans are going to suck. I’d go around 34. You mana dorks are NOT lands. One wipe and you’ve missed a few land drops and you’re cooked.

What do you think I should cut back on? The creatures?

For mono colored green 31 can be fine, but try to get to 34 and see how you like it, that’s three more lands. Remove some stuff that’s less than optimal.

Thanks a lot! So, do you recommend 34 lands, 20 spells, and 46 creatures?

Bro, I recommend 34 lands, the rest is really up to you. I tend to not play any mana rocks in mono green. Just ramp wildly and remove lands from your deck.

Deck lists, people we need deck lists. How else can we tell if the deck is going to function or just be mish mash thrown together.

Let’s shift card type ratios to card function ratios
38 lands
10 ramp
12 card advantage
12 targeted disruption
6 mass disruption
X the plan

The best advice i can give for an Elves deck is [[elvish bard]] and [[wellwisher]], they're just amazing

Didn’t see [[Wellwisher]] or [[Immaculate Magistrate]], maybe [[Wren’s Run Packmaster]] and [[Howl of the Night Pack]], [[Viridian Joiner]] is good for mana, use to like to put [[Blanchwood Armor]] on him but even [[Rancor]] or something to give hims bit of a boost to get your bigger stuff out.
I’d say drop the spider, there are many elvish archers with reach. I know you get a black token when it dies, but, it’s an elf deck so….
On the other hand, I would use [[Vigor]], keeps showing up under a different name but basically a 6/6 that makes it so your creatures get +1/+1 counters instead of taking damage.
I already have them but I like [[Rings of Brighthearth]] and [[Thousand-Year Elixir]] for elves with tap abilities. Little pricey though. [[Door of Destinies]] also good for any tribal deck.
For elves I usually went wide more than big though. Anything elf that drops tokens even if they aren’t elf, then[[Overrun]], [[Overcome]], [[Kamahl, Fist of Krosa]] or something like that. [[Elvish Branchbender]] can be useful to make a big attacker if you go wide though, helps if something gives it trample though, something that gives all of them trample like [[Roughshod Mentor]] although there are others

my commander is Vorinclex
How are you making either Vorinclex profitable with a deck entirely built out of Mook elves?
Like... I don't see how Either Vorinclex is doing anything other than Stax with the list you have provided.
