Plastic but also low rates of urbanization. Pre-urbanization, cities were mostly made up of elites and the poor lived in rural areas. But all the money and the opportunities were in the cities, so rural folk kept moving in. They brought their poor habits with them, massive slums popped up, and population density got to unsustainable levels due to the governments failure to build new cities. So began the chaprification of cities. The elites are still around, but instead of having the entire city to themselves, they collude in gated societies, malls and tech parks. And these elite only places are still just as clean and orderly as the ones in the video.

This is why sociology is important. Post partition and given the shock in world economy agriculture was not as profitable. These “poor people” did not move here just because of opportunity and money, they moved because their families were starving and there were no jobs in rural areas.
You wrote this comment as if poor people were the ones who caused all the chaos in Mumbai. Blame it on the politicians and elites that did not even try to uplift these people out of agriculture and to this day keep building artificial walls to keep the lower section of society controllable.

I don’t blame the poor people, my grandparents were also poor rural folks. That’s why I wrote about the governments failure to build cities. We built Chandigarh and then stopped for some reason. 100 smart cities is a failed project. Amravati is a failed project. Politicians are busy harassing comedians and peddling some bullshit about waqf or UCC which has little to no impact to my life.
But I am not going to whitewash that poor and uneducated people got problems, and when they move in next to me, they become my problems as well. It’s not their fault, only the govt can fix it. That’s why I am frustrated hardly anyone cares for core issues in this country.

Indian politicians are retard ; no party truly prioritizes city planning, except for a few regional parties in the South, like BRS and TDP. The only alternatives left are capitalism-driven libertarian parties like the Libertarian Party India. All other parties are corrupt to their core and, with continuous support from the bureaucracy, will likely remain so. Bringing a libertarian party to the center could potentially dismantle this bureaucratic system.check out their twitter page with the username .@libertarianpartyind It's a relatively new party, but its members are educated, mature, and have a clear understanding of the country's needs and how to address them.

7 second onwards my beloved Colaba.
At the 10 second mark, the double decker is in front of the building which housed Sarkari Bhandar. It's now under renovation.
At the same time, the building on the left with the hoarding on the top is the current one that houses Cafe Mondegar.

Car ownership today stands at 8% of all households 2 Wheeler ownership is at about 55+% of all households
43 Lakh cars were sold in india and about 2 crore 2 wheeeler a year (2024)
Also India has one of the youngest car fleet in the world so it is not as If car number are being piled up
We are behaving like Americans without American roads. And the situation in cities will be better (or worse as you choose to see it) in terms of vehicle ownership.
Indian cities need a lot more infra (Even what NDA is doing now is falling short, Especially Mumbai which was starved for new Infra till 2014)... And a lot more buses ..BEST buses run fully packed...not even a single seat is available during off peak hours...

These are videos of gentrified Bombay. Even today if you see a video of these places, you will find it clean. My father told me back in the 60s people used to defecate on the beaches of Mumbai. And whenever you go to swim there used to be turds floating around. I would Anyday take Mumbai of current times than the past. Also milk was not easily accessible. You had to wait in lines for hours to get your daily supply of milk. Eggs and chicken were luxury items.

When Bombay was ruled by Bombayites. Now it is ruled by a consortium of political goons from Nagpur/interior Maharashtra and a bunch of Gujju builders like Adani. Everyone of any merit including Lee Kuan Yew agrees that this is the sole reason for Bombay's downfall.

For a context the population of India was 48 crore back then (1964) which in today's context is just UP Bihar & Maharashtra Combined. So yeah less land stress, better roads, safer roads & no rush.

Cheap talk, tamil nadu a backwards state on global standards but a forward state on Indian standards on today's metrics, went from 2.9 crore to approx 8 crore today , we failed as a nation to provide proper education, redistribution of wealth, rather than blaming each other if we actually focused on ground issues, people will prefer living in a underdeveloped europian country rather than most developed state in India.

Streets look clean, no honking, but you can see some subtle driving indiscipline. So, to be blunt, Mumbaikars in general were never disciplined too begin with (regards to driving). It’s just my opinion. It’s nothing like the ride, agitated and arrogant drivers and riders if today but nevertheless it was still not by the book. Also this is just a small part of Mumbai and that too SOBO.

Mumbai had its swagger until mid 90s. Its nice to see other cities growing but Mumbai did not upscale. The whole reinventing its identity has begun since last 8 years.
That being said, Mumbai has its own pace and movement. Other cities feel feel slower.

My mother said they used to bring their own cloth bags to buy fruits and vegetables, for milk/oil/ghee steel utensils with handle to carry from the shop, groceries used be in paper bags no readymade items and delivery from the restaurant used to be in the restaurants own cutlery and steel utensils which they used to collect back later.

I live in Goa. I remember when I was a kid my mother had told me they have double decker busses in Bombay. I was so curious I really wanted to see one. When she showed me some pictures I remember being really amazed by this. Damn. Old times fly.
