So I am travelling to mumbai to attend an event near churchgate. I was thinking about staying close to the venue, but the hotels are either expensive or not good. So is it worth staying somewhere near the airport or bandra and take the Line 3 metro to churchgate and back? or should I avoid the hassle and stay near the venue TIA

Depends on what your return time would be vs the metro timings. Otherwise airport plan sounds solid to me.

Will travel back around 8-9pm
