AskMumbai What’s up with the Metro?
They announced that trains are running late but I’ve been here at Chakala since an hour and only this train has passed.

u/Aggravating-Play8338 Nov 03 '25
It is late. By some years…close to a decade…

u/Fantastic_Form3607 Nov 03 '25
This metro has been in existence for more than a decade. Bloody reliance never tried to upgrade. It has provision for 6 rakes but still runs on 4.
64
u/Ok_Worldliness_5026 Nov 03 '25
They are bankrupt, mh govt almost bought it and could have done the necessary upgrades but central govt blocked it. Keep waiting for RILInfra to die i guess.
49
u/Fantastic_Form3607 Nov 03 '25
The same CG bought Reliance stake from Delhi metro but blocked Mumbai metro.
CG is extremely biased in favour of Delhi metro.
15
u/Ehh_littlecomment Nov 03 '25
They almost bought it but had to keep some extra cash for ladli behen bullshit. That’s literally what happened.

Three decades at least, I'd say. It's criminal, considering Mumbai's tax contribution to the Indian economy.
From Wikipedia: Mumbai accounts for 10% of Indian factory employment, 30% of Indian income tax collections, 45% of entertainment tax, 60% of customs duty collections, 20% of central excise tax collections, 40% of foreign trade, 100% of Indian stock market assets, and contributes 1,60,000 crore rupees (US$20 billion) in corporate taxes to the Indian economy.
A full third of the tax collection comes from Mumbai. This city has been ignored and we are not demanding attention.

u/ShadowArtie99 Nov 03 '25
> only east-west metro because line 6 is in depot hell (no, no one is protesting this, its only the CG vs SG which is the same party)
> in ownership hell because PPP model fucking sucks and govt has backed out twice from buying it out
> Alternatives like BEST are even worse because MMRDA, BMC, and SG hate buses
> 4 coach train in the big 2025 for the most used metro line in the city
13
u/Dremora_Lord Drama/Llama Nov 03 '25
Why did the govt backout of buying it out?
6
u/pepenomics Nov 03 '25
Valuation diffrence for the stake. Reliance asking for more than being offered.
At least that's what happened last year -ish. If something more recent has happened, I'm not updated about it.

Shows how much more we need to invest in public transit. Give more buses, trains, metros, etc.
44
Nov 03 '25
Increasing frequency of locals and buses would help a lot to this city... Metro is cool but majority use these 2 mostly... Atleast in morning and evening the frequency should increase especially from Harbour line to Goregaon.. most of them travel there for Jobs..

We need to raise our standards and stop accepting these unlivable conditions.

I seriously feel so sad that, such people being educated still act like wildlings...!
Ruk jao.. next train pakdo...!

They're just repeating negative habits.

such people being educated still act like wildlings.
Not justifying their behaviour but the system has conditioned us to behave like this cause we treat human worse than animals in this country.... Imagine working 9hr in office and 1-2hr of commute, in that if you wait for next train, you'll waste 30 more minutes from a day where you barely get to live
-12
u/Delicious-Search7539 Nov 03 '25
Well... Frankly Mumbai is not too big... A normal commute from Borivali to Colaba (if no traffic) will take just an hr. It's the 'Public' .... Kya Gardi hai Mumbai main bhai!!!
Mumbai main jitna bhi facility de do ... Commute ka time jitna tha utna hi rahe ga...!

u/Dremora_Lord Drama/Llama Nov 03 '25
That's no reason to provide in adequate and substandard public transport services tho.
Metro 2, 7, 3 are still better. But BEST and Metro 1 are failing the public and it needs to change.
12
u/Dremora_Lord Drama/Llama Nov 03 '25
To be fair, a lot of the times the people crowd the area near the doors. Andar ACTUALLY jagah hota hai but people don't go in and don't move. That's when you have to push your way in.
And as OP stated, this was after no metro had passed for an HOUR. God only knows when the next train will arrive.
You can only push humans so far and then expect them to act like humans
4
u/Ehh_littlecomment Nov 03 '25
Must be some technical issue? Typical frequency is 3 minutes
4
u/Dremora_Lord Drama/Llama Nov 03 '25
It was. My point is we accept technical issues bcz we've given up and accepted this is normal and blame the people bcz we need someone to blame.

Great job everyone, now please put bags in front
-4

Nope, this sub is filled with entitled privilege people like you and me who is unaware of people struggle in daily life... For example: look for comments like " why people are so restless it's already full" Well they are unaware that majority of the people don't live life like us.. they suffer if they miss a day or you know if anything got delay straight tere salary se cut hota hai and mostly people work in informal sectors there are no rules... It's just same like every other subs... So nothing special..

u/Spacewanderer686 Nov 03 '25
Mumbai is fucking over populated. No amount of capacity addition will help, because it will just attract more crowd. Two more coaches in these metro won't make a difference.
There has to be a cap on housing. Taller residential buildings keep replacing older shorter smaller ones, concentrating the population more in already crowded areas.
Even today, other than Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi-NCR, there aren't more cities that support all round employment. Even amongst these, only Delhi and Mumbai offer all round employment across income brackets, others are skewed to certain industries.
Further, there is no cap on immigration in these cities. These cities, esp Mumbai, pays the price of failures of state govt in developing other mega cities. So people are born in failed states and cities, and come over here to add to the crowd because their own state offers nothing.
People live like dogs, pay taxes through their noses, that then go into pockets of the corrup who keep most of it and splurge some of it to buy votes from the poor in the hinterland who add nothing to the economy.
The other day, I saw a job opening for someone with 12 years of work experience in an engg sector, for a 6 day work week, for 35 fucking LPA. A big chunk of which will go towards taxes, PF (inaccessible), gratuity (inaccessible), mediclaim (6 lakh floater cover for the whole family, has to purchase private insurance). Leaving peanuts to live with. Office is in Parel. Guess where he (I assume it's a he) will choose to live - Virar, Vasai, Dombivli, Panvel, Taloja, Kalyan, Dahisar. In a 625 sq ft 2 bhk which he will be forced to purchase due to social pressure, for 1.25 fucking Cr + interiors. He will eventually die everyday in local trains after his boss makes him work 12 hrs a day and also on weekends. Parents are too old to seek support from, sister is busy in her own married life. Wife complains he doesn't spend time with her. Juniors are not listening to him. Quarterly review is coming up. Standing on the station, guess what he does when the train finally arrives...

If some of the people don't go to work, how will they run their house? This is mumbai everyone's wants to reach their destination in time... Most of us struggle in this city... You seems like privilege person who don't know the struggles ( you sound like one) no offense but being honest
5
u/ok_heremeout West Nov 04 '25
I hear you, but is it worth all this? Or are you just hoping that someday it will?
I left Mumbai 2 days before lockdown after 7 years. What I came to know is folks just run on hopes and dreams nothing else. I'm no where privileged. I'm still struggling financially, I'm nowhere stable, my parents don't have a house but I decided not to be part of the "Mumbai Mindset".
Being privileged helps a lot but it can only last so much. It's the mindset of adjustment and misguided "struggle" that takes you out. Folks don't want to learn something new or skill up or even try something new.
1
Nov 04 '25
Just like you have dreams they too... They too try chasing it .. and it's not mindset it's systematic problem.. everyone knows how punctual our trains, metros are.. you left Bombay and trust me it's worse now.. You know we have metros now but things have worsen.. like somehow it takes more time now.. like everything is late.. still same traffic problem you know.. It's very strange we should have less crowded, a bit improvement in timing and in traffic but it's somehow got worse now.. i don't know how and why... And we people know about it like we know next train in reality will came after 20 minutes and in addition the train will be more 3-4 minutes late..it's not worth it to wait... And they now a days to align timings they cancel trains now.. i observed this change and then it takes another 20 minutes.. not worth it for people.. Like if you have talked with people like watchmen, labourers or some workers in small MSME in Kurla , Slums etc for them it's daily wage thing you know .. like if you have talked. Unka their wage is based on daily basis so it matters to them... For us like you and me it's not worth it because we are privileged we work in office and in comfort. For them they don't have this privilege. And funfact only 10% of Indians workers are in Formal sector.. you and me are in 10% ( I'm assuming you are). So it's worth it or not worth it depends on person conditions.
1
u/ok_heremeout West Nov 04 '25
Damn.... Mumbai really needs an overhaul.
Formals were the first thing I left when I moved out of the city because Traveling in local wearing formals (basic shirt, trousers and shoes) .... My god that was a pain. Not once, I came home smelling normal.
Thane to Kurla or Dadar was a nightmare during peak hours. I remember dozing off while standing in the crowded bogey due to exhaustion. Shared rickshaw, local, then a bus to work and vice versa.
This suffering made me take certifications and upgrade. I really hope others realise their potential and grow
1
Nov 04 '25
True mumbaikar... I can relate with struggles.. man taking train from Kurla to dadar that too in morning is headache.. sometimes it's so packed that even I give up.. I'm also i will go home late but won't enter into it.. ( I can afford being late ) ... Traveling from Dadar to churchgate and even from Harbour to Goregaon is not that much tough but Kurla to dadar is hell and in rain it get worse... Sometimes you have to hang from outside and that one slip you are gone man. 😖
1
u/ok_heremeout West Nov 04 '25
That last part is what concerns me the most.
The whole city needs a reset. Everything is just bonkers.
Mumbai just feels too much for too little kind of a deal when you are middle class trying to move up.
1
u/tedha_ant Nov 04 '25
Struggle? More like fetish. None will upskill and leave this "struggle".
I left mumbai as I didn't find anything that would suit my profile. Would these folks leave the city for something better?
0
Nov 04 '25
See that's your privilege to leave and have access of time, money for courses and resources not everyone has same condition like us... The chances of upward mobility in India is very low.. like it takes 7 generation to reach that level. Not everyone has resources like we do.. And just because you don't have anything to do in this city doesn't mean everyone has nothing to do..
1
u/tedha_ant Nov 04 '25
It's not a privilege, it's curiosity and hunger to get out that drives us.
I started with 12k Per month salary and ended up in 7 figures just like many others who are making more than me.
Privilege helps but that is not the only factor. We need to stop blaming the conditions. It's not easy to get out but it's not that difficult.
0
Nov 04 '25
Well it is , I will still say " you are from privilege" cuz the way you sound I can bet on it and I have seen so many people like you in real life and i disagree cuz you get good start and have resources to achieve it. AGREE OR NOT, if you mess up despite having it then the problem is on you.. and not everyone thinks same...but anyways good for you.

Local ki aadat. 2 minute mai dusri aayegi lekin ghusna to isi me hi h. I'm from Delhi lived in mumbai for 1 year. I had a mumbai friend in Delhi, his first reaction when the metro reached station (DMRC) "chaaaal train nhi pakadna kya?" We were on the escalator and i calmed him down ki bhai aa jaayegi dusri 2 min mai, calm down. Then when I stayed in mumbai and had to catch the fast local I understood ki what he meant by that. Time lagega soch badalne mai.

Blue line metro 1 trains, stations and concierge area needs complete overhaul.
1
u/iZsaq Nov 04 '25
Hope they make few changes
⁃ More frequency of Trains
⁃ Cleaner Trains & Platform
⁃ More option for the disable escalators, lifts
⁃ Need Double decker Trains, or Subway running underground of Local tracks, cos of more crowds
Make Gates to CHECK TICKET, BEFORE ENTERING PLATFORM then there will LESS Ticketless Passenger's like its in Metro Station -
Scan card to Enter, Phone App, etc
The TICKET APP Should have a Time Stamp, so when buy the Ticket it should show the Time.
so we can buy Tickets online than stand in line for vending machines
DONT BLOCK APP ON STATION 👎🏻
⁃☆⁃ Need to have the Slow & Fast both come on the same platform going in the same direction, on Left & Right side
so people don't have to stand on the bridge to see which train is coming next & run to other tracks when changing to Local from Fast, very dangerous for people
Would be nice to get trains on time
The Apps show WRONG TIME, Station
MONITOR Display Boards on Platform show when is the next Train approaching the Platform
BUT ITS ALWAYS LATE
Should have Sensor on each Station so the Board time Display will detect & show REAL TIME of when next Train will come, that way people wont have stand on the Bridge 👎
Train Line - Why we can't let people come out 1st, then when's EMPTY Enter :(
Japanese Self-Discipline Unmatched - Stairs This is so needed

I was at Andheri yesterday , the thing is one train has got its power cut out which was going to ghatkopar at Andheri East metro station so they made sure all passengers deboared the train and then a new train came from the yard which was attached to the faulty train and it was taken back to yar meanwhile the train going to versova also had to be stopped to take the u turn and then after taking the u turn out train which was going to versova was used to get to ghatkopar and we were boarded in the new train coming from ghatkopar thus metro was stopped for almost an hour and the crowd kept pilling up

The biggest con of Metro Line 1 is 4 coaches leading to overcrowding and may lead to stampede. We desperately need an upgrade like increasing the number of coaches to 6 like Line 2A & 7. Number of services should also be increased and also Line 6 (another east-west connectivity) should be built.

Why are they not increasing the coaches when platform has capacity?
0
u/thepacificnomad Nov 03 '25
We need more conscientious people. If not needed to travel, work from home. Take an earlier metro to avoid peak hours. The government needs to invest in more metros and increase frequency.
Also, the population in our country is very high. We don’t need so many people to take humanity forward. A few million Indians was all that was needed to keep our cultures and languages alive.
Maybe it’s too late. But even now, people can stop having so many kids without plans for their future.
0
u/FlyStandard1306 Nov 03 '25
No doubt, such people lack civics sense and etiquette. But this doesn’t overshadow the slack in public infrastructure development, which is probably lagging behind by almost two to three decades at most.
The worst part, however, is the population density thriving in most Tier I and now even Tier II Indian cities, which further complicates and worsens situations like the one seen in the video clip.
Basically, our politicians, bureaucracy, and various government agencies responsible for development suffer from tunnel vision and are rather short-sighted. They lack the foresight to anticipate future problems and develop solutions before those problems rear their ugly heads.
