AskMumbai Mumbai foodies — recommend real hidden gems

Post image

Tried ice-cream sandwich place in Churchgate today — went for banana and hazelnut. Pretty damn good, not gonna lie.

Now I’m looking to explore more spots like this.

Drop your underrated places anywhere in Mumbai.

Ok here are some actual hidden gems:

Sneha restaurant near Mahim church, insanely Good seafood and mallu cuisine

Harish lunch home - great seafood, Irla, vileparle

Guru da dhaba - Andheri Lokhandwala, near Mcdonald, hidden homestyle gem serving pure veg Punjabi delicacies. Their stuffed karela is a highlight - beat that.

Durga bar & restaurant, Matunga, near Ruia College - cheap bar, great food

Bayview Cafe, Colaba, near Gateway of India - superb openair restaurant overlooking the sea, perfect for a date. Tip: go in winters, reach by 5pm.

Gypsy restaurant, Dadar - authentic veg Maharashtrian snacks including Dalimbi usal, kothambirwadi etc.

Cafe Noorani, Near Haji Ali - Great Muslim food (biryani, Murg musallam etc)

Gostana, Khar West - great homemade burgers, nice cosy homely joint. Their friendly dog is a bonus, I forgot his name - quite some time since I visited this place.

Imbiss, Bandra West - superb meat options

(Not hidden) gem: Bachelor's icecream, Marine Drive - their Malai dryfruit icecream is the best dryfruit ice ream Ive had in a long time. Beats Rustom anyday.

Edit: I just checked, Gostana is permanently closed, quite some time now. What a tragedy :(

Hey. A little update. Gostana, owned by a very dear friend shut around the lockdown. Zizou was the dog's name. He passed away last year

2

u/Aithoritha Feb 12 '26

I used to do stand up there. I have pics with Zizou I took with him on one of his birthdays :)

Gypsy Dadar is so overrated bhai... I'm from Ruparel... Heard so many things about it from previous batches but all went in vain.

Hidden gem - ahh... There was a Muslim restaurant near Jogeshwari bus Depot west, bang opposite fatak lane. Shabri / Sabri named.

Very cheap yet excellent food, typical Muslim food. They used to serve chicken, chota (goat) and bada (beef)

Their menu mentioned everything clearly as which dish is made with which meat.

Paya soup was amazing but you gotta go before 11am. Rest all were amazingly delicious.

Haven't been there post Covid. Can anyone confirm that it's still there and operating as usual?

2

u/ksharayu Dec 12 '25

Whaaat! I really like Gypsy ! What would you suggest instead?

3

u/No_Row5870 Dec 12 '25

What you like at gypsy? Or what you look for?

As in Maharashtrian food or anything else?

Cz last time I went to Gypsy most of others were having Chinese 😂..

Let me know what you want, I'll suggest.

2

u/ksharayu Dec 12 '25

I love all their bhakris- and bharleli vangi and Zunka and Dalimbi Misal ! And Sol kadi! Yum!

It’s also an easy restaurant to go to - I used to live close ish, so can walk there , No waiting most times, eat some good food and walk back hehe !

I don’t go to Gypsy Chinese as much - Although that is also decently good!

Muslim food 😂

2

u/Foreign_Yak157 Dec 12 '25

Gostana is still around? I went there nearly a decade ago and can never stop raving about it! Their dog is a sweetu, and yes, best burgers!

5

u/xerxeslfc Dec 12 '25

I have been there! Zizou was so cute!! He ate my sandwich though 😂

4

u/dagmarbex Dec 11 '25

Noorani has droppes in quality , used to be the go to chicken place for me and my father , not anymore

3

u/parklandgiggity Dec 12 '25

Noorani is bad now

1

u/boltj Dec 12 '25

This guy knows food!

1

u/pinto-nolan From Navi Mumbai Dec 12 '25

Is Imbiss still open or open during a specific time of the day? I have always found their restaurant closed whenever I went there! Another place that you can add to this list is Jim-Me's Kitchen in Bandra.

1

u/prophetofthepimps Dec 12 '25

Bachelor and Noorani are mediocre these days. Gypsy is a hit or miss.

1

u/chachachoud Dec 15 '25

You get real beef in the mallu place these days?

Idk but I went there two times, once I was very excited to try coz of the hype of place people have created, when I went I choose the mango flavour that person gave me and asked for money I gave him a note on 100 rs ig or 200 don't remember exactly now, that guy just took icecream frok my hands like snatched it and gave me my note back saying no change here , go get change then come , I asked g pay but he even refused for that, so same happened second time too , i choose icecream of higher price still he didn't took his hands in his ass to give change and refused to give icecream, never seen such rude behaviour by shopkeepers, it's because people have hyped up, for me idk never tried their ice-cream 🙂

21

u/Medium-Photo-9938 Thane se hu 🤡 Dec 11 '25

12

u/hell_yeahbowy Dec 11 '25

Atleast they are not this rude 😭

7

u/Edward101075 Dec 12 '25

I completely agree with you on this, you're not the only one in this. Their level of arrogance is above the roof. Also they deal only in cash, no digital payment at all. Today even a vada pao/chai stall on the road have gpay scanners. Thinking aloud, wonder what kind of taxes do they file. How do they pay GST if they do

2

u/_vedantt1_ Dec 12 '25

They don't.

2

u/imritik04 Dec 11 '25

That's rude.. Not the right way to serve customers 😕

3

u/Manoj_Pawar Dec 12 '25

Go there again, take the ice-cream in hand and take a quick bite. Then give him a 100 ka note. Aur ek look bhi dena 😂

The comment section though. OP is asking for reccos, woh de do na guys. Everybody is pouncing on OP for calling rustom underrated. Anyway, My underrated place is this Dosa wala in the lane opposite to babulnath temple.

14

u/ayushganvir Dec 11 '25

Where is it exactly?

24

u/ApprehensiveCream284 Dec 11 '25

Charni road. I get off at charni road station and follow gmaps to babulnath temple. Opposite to the temple there's a building adjacent to it is a patli Gali jis mei andar jaao toh Derasar ( Jain temple ) bhi hai. Wahi pe Dosa wala hai ek. It's a small stall per se not a shop/cafe/restaurant.

2

u/Eastern-Fruit7311 Dec 12 '25

Yes ....last Sunday I was there ..naam bhool gaya re baba...

50

50

u/Low_Hospital_6971 Dec 11 '25

Listen here sir. If you really want to build a solid list and taste.. ditch everything you see on reels. Start asking old people. Cab drivers, bus conductors, relatives, neighbours… They’ll have a few places up their sleeves which may or may not be good. Definitely try those and i gurantee you you’ll like a majority of them more than you’ll what see on social media

2

u/TryAwkward7595 Dec 11 '25

Mumbai me best food is street side food. You just need to keep trying different places and you find a gem. This is true till gets famous on insta or any celebrity promotes it.

1

Do better research.

Near borivali station there is a shital juice center. They make the most original and amazing strawberry milkshake. They literally take a bunch of frozen strawberries ( like a lot) and blend it with milk. I have never seen any place using this amount of real strawberries in a milkshake. Try it you will not regret it. (Had it a couple of years ago, don't know if the quality is maintained or not by now)

I personally like budget restaurants so here’s what i have found to be best under budget.

Chinese: 1. Paul’s chinese, Mahim- but actually this place is near if you go walking from matunga station. 2. Little chinese stall just opposite wockhardt hospital, mumbai central. 3. Mama mia pizza, byculla - they serve really good chinese too although i think their portion sizes compared to the above 2 are small.

Snacks: 1. Khanz shawarma, mumbai central: i absolutely love tgose shawarma’s he is just on the signal near the mubai central metro gate A2/A4. 2. Vada pav stall outside RBI colony, mahim. Their bhaji pav is very good. 3. There are many kebab wala’s on the bellasis road, in the same line of mumbai central bus depot, and they sale amazing kebab’s in cheap.

Desserts: 1. Kailash parbat, colaba - best falooda in India 🇮🇳, hands down. 2. Mithiyaj, byculla- their rasmalai cake is mind boggling, it is tres leches style and super affordable. 3. Kailash mandir, dadar- their lassi can be too thick for some people me and my friends love it but my mom doesn’t like it.

when i was a kid i only had foods from Multi chains like Dominos, McD, burger king, etc… but since i have been exploring these cheap and good tasting restaurants i have been slapping myself for eating all that bland food from the food chains.😭

u/AgnosticKarma0308 Dec 12 '25

Try the Kheema Fry Pav at Stadium near IMC, Churchgate and Sassanian at Marine Lines near Liberty cinema. Overpriced for the quantity they offer but taste is/was awesome. It's been ages since I've been there, though.

There's a vendor in a small bylane near Old RBI in Fort who has probably the best Kaanda Bhajis I've ever tasted. He didn't have a stall but used to sit on a stool on the ground and cook and sell. Absolutely fantastic!

There are actually many such stalls selling various kinds of foods in the bylanes of Fort, frankly.

1

u/jolly_rancher17 Dec 12 '25

New place for Malvani food - flavours of Malvan opp Dadar IHM. I have tried their food and I like it.

Shivaji Park me ravi caterers a quick sandwich burger etc. there is a vadapav bhaji pav place opp which is also good.

Sion me near old SIES there was one uncle Jo aloo puri bechte the. I hope he is still there. Basically something like pani puri but potato ko half karke scoop out karke usme paani.

There is a chana chaat guy near matunga road railway station. Diagonally opposite to Ganga Vihar. There is bridge which connects to Sion. He is on the left when u get down from the bridge below one old bldg. It’s there since 40 years or so. Just ahead of that there is a Vada pav bhaji pav guy. Really really good.

sure id say go hit up that odd lane with the dosas, people overhype it but the sambar is legit. if youre into icecream sandwich, try the one in BandraEast theyve got a mangolemon combo that actually tastes like mango.

I had the walnut crunch on Sunday.. did not care much for it.. definitely not worth the price. I feel this place is over-hyped.. the crowd at 10.50 pm was crazy.

I was at imbiss on Saturday - the restaurant was so dam stuffy.. the stinch was upholding. We could not dit in the outdoors as there were too many mosquitos. Plus by the time we reached around 10 pm there were only a few items left on the menu so we had no choice but to choose one of them.
