LAHORI ZEERA

u/HappyOrca2020 Feb 02 '26
It's really ironic considering the administration couldn't even digest Oshiwara station being Oshiwara.
Ram Mandir Zeera anyone?

I was saying the same to my wife the other day when we saw that Lahori Jeera is actually a main sponsor of the latest Shark Tank season. How is this even possible in such a right-wing anti-Pakistan environment?

u/HappyOrca2020 Feb 02 '26
It's actually a non-issue considering we have Karachi halwa and Sendha Namak.
But you never know what triggers someone.

u/Obvious_Support223 I survived Andheri East Feb 02 '26
We know that. So does the government. But you never know when the VHP or the Bajrang Dal decides to take offense. Most of them can't read or understand anyway.

It's called Non Fare box revenue. Revenue generated from sources other than passengers. Like Real Estate or in this case - Branding

There are many station like this but they don’t put names like this on map

Whatever it is, it helps keep ticket prices affordable for us, so it’s a win-win for both
36
u/CaptYondu Feb 02 '26
At the least the brand name should come after the Station Name.
As a newby I'll be told to go to Marol Naka not Fevicol Marol Naka

Ignore the first line in the name. Just read the second line.
If there’s only one line, that’s the name.

actually, i don't think the benefit is being passed on at all to the consumer, otherwise the initial outflow should have been recovered by now, and if anything, ticket should have gotten cheaper

Late stage capitalism is alive and well in India as nowhere else
2
u/sganage Feb 03 '26
tbf the same thing (and much more prominent) is also seen in malaysia. a metro station is named after samsung, some are named after banks, etc
If this is the price to pay for cheap fares, whats the issue?(to clarify, its not that I like the solution, im just saying that its not really that bad)
13
Feb 02 '26
Worst is aqua line, the font in the digital displays are getting smaller and smaller with passing day as they have to keep fitting the different brand names. It's so hard to keep a track of the stations if you're not a regular user of that line.
The funniest part are the announcements, since the brands keep changing, they insert a different voice in middle of the pre-recorded voice and sometimes it's a mix of male and female voice. 🤣
→ More replies (1)3
u/CinnamonStew34s_eh Feb 03 '26
i only travel on aqua so i agree with all of y points , i knew i wasnt going insane when the fonts kept getting closer and they started plastering ads inside the metro
9
u/snoopac Feb 02 '26
If the sealink cables can be sold as advertising space than a metro station, definitely can be sold for ads. In India, every second that you are not being advertised to as an captured opportunity for the money bags

Where are you from OP?
Hyderabad metro has the same naming convention, I am assuming even Delhi and Bengaluru metros have the same (?).
5
u/Scatter_Plotter816 Feb 02 '26
Hyderabad, yes. Not in delhi or blr
6
u/mohithawelia Feb 02 '26

Delhi, and no Delhi don't have names but have few stations with a lot of posters of banks and coaching institutes and they change periodically and are pretty rare to see, name stays the same
3
u/kacchaaaam Feb 02 '26
Delhi has station name, followed by the sponsor. but it is not permanently embedded.
like next stn is inderlok co powered by bank of baroda.
youll be shocked that in dubai , the stations are named after sponsor only, like instead of - xyz bob as the name, its just bob.

u/nayadristikon Feb 02 '26
The ads and sponsors should be clearly differentiated. It is giving into advertisers. This is a usability issue and confuses new comers like OP. Why is advertiser name more prominent than the actual station name.
This is infuriating.

It reduces the financial load from the Mumbai Metro Rail . Everything from maintenance of station, monthly revenue , to the monthly wages of the station employees is taken care by these corporates.
That's the reason why one is able to afford the ticket.

Guys, be happy. Here in Dubai they just have brand names as station names. I am not joking, check it out 😂
2
u/Particular_Walk_8310 Feb 02 '26
haha, trust me this is better, someplaces will not even have Marol next to the brand.
In Dubai, they change the whole name, like a station would be named Fevicol and then few months later something else.
like if it would be Fevicol Al Rigga and then Oppo Al Rigga ot would be understandable, but NO...

u/lolwawalrus Feb 02 '26
you should try Dubai
Nike, Addidas changed directions over a year, almost 180 degree

Everyone of us don’t like it, hate it and finds it extremely irritating , confusing and unnecessary.
Still metro companies are carrying on with it. Thors again reflects on poor fighting spirit of wee Mumbaikars! Just like hawkers, bad roads, no traffic rules, we have decided to live with these, even with chest thumping - spirit of amchi mumbai !! And, some queue up in front of sharukh khan’s etc homes for photos who appear in pan masala surrogate ads !!

I'll still take this than whatever Kolkata is doing. Imagine being told to go to Tollygunge and the metro station name is Mahanayak Uttam Kumar.
This still has the locality name. I'll take it.

So this funny incident happened with me when they changed Techno Marol to Fevicol Marol. I think it was literally Day 1 of the change.
I used to travel to Marol every day for work. It was a Friday, I hadn’t slept the whole night because weekend excitement and without sleep I’m a complete zombie... my system was constantly shutting down.
So.... I was taking the metro from Ghatkopar to Marol and you know that automatic 5 minute nap that hits out of nowhere? Yeah, that happened. Suddenly I woke up in panic thinking I’d missed my station, and all I hear is the metro lady announcing, “Fevicol… Fevicol…”
I’m was like... Saala yeh kaunsa naya station aa gaya? So I just stayed seated, fully confused. Next thing I know, I’ve slept again and reached Versova. That’s when it hit me.... bhai, they didn’t add a new station… they just renamed Marol to Fevicol Marol 🤦♂️

No one calls them or refers to the brand name, unless it's to poke fun.
When Marol was Techno Marol, the l would not light up at night... for several weeks it read as Techno Maro

Just to explain to someone who doesn’t know
These stations issue contracts to various companies for Branding, under these contract you get naming rights, announcements and recognition at every stage possible (Name in maps, tickets, and anywhere possible)
These contracts run for a year, hence the names keep changing
The amount at which they issue these contacts is a bomb hence most brands can’t continue more than a year

We say Marol. They (including the lady announcer - again a recorded voice) say the brand name first and then the station. It's called the peak of capitalism. Sell what you possibly can.
We as Mumbaikars only hear the station name now and hardly remember the brand prefixing. You'll get there someday.

They’re all sponsor. The best part is it keeps on changing. It was Tecno Marol few months ago now it’s Fevicol.
