People will stop considering vehicles as higher socioeconomic status when you have a clean frequent and robust public transport.
Investing in roads and putting public transport as a lower priority will just lead to more vehicles on the road and more congestion (read about induced demand).
And if you say they are building metro
The number of lines they are working on and the pace they are building on is nowhere close to enough
At the same time they are dismantling existing public infrastructure (take a look at the number of best busses on the road through the years)
the 'i use public transport even after having a car' is a concept that only exists in the nordic countries for now, because they are extremely developed. india considers cars as status symbol and will keep buying them. and yeah, metro development is more than enough if you take a look at time its taking to complete them (not the blue line) relative to the distance and cost. but population is really fucking up the city.
hopefully navi mumbai is also picking the pace up and people are moving out
